Animal welfare organisation offers 67 pets free vaccinations on Mandela Day

Picture: Supplied AS part of Mandela Day celebrations, the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) launched a one-of-a-kind walk-through vaccination clinic and offered the first 67 pets free vaccinations as a way of promoting the veterinary health care facility. Nicole Williams, who brought her poodle and pit bull for vaccinations, said this was a great initiative by AWS SA. She said pet owners needed to be made aware of the importance of vaccination. “When vaccinating your pets, veterinarians can check if animals are healthy and also bring other issues to light that owners may miss,” she added. “Being an animal lover and Mandela baby (birthday today), it is important to take time out and reflect on what organisations like this do on a daily basis to make society a better place for our pets,” she added.

Thereza Wiese, who brought her poodle in for a vaccination, said: “This is a fantastic idea by the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa.” AWS SA spokesperson Allan Perrins said Mandela Day was a reminder that people had the ability and responsibility to change the world for the better. “The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa has been a major force for good for the past nine decades and Mandela Day presents us with an opportunity to showcase our work and garner additional support. Our expectations have been exceeded,” he said. His message to pet lovers: “Take good care of your pets. Ensure that their vaccinations are up to date at all times. If you are considering getting a pet then please consider adoption.”

Hollywood Foundation donates R50 000 towards SA Riding for the Disabled Association After a successful Durban July, the Hollywood Foundation has donated R50 000 towards the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA), which will go towards improving the overall functioning of children living with physical and mental disabilities. “When Hollywoodbets came on board as the naming rights sponsor for the Durban July, we also got to inherit some amazing projects and one of those was having a community organisation of choice that we can support through the sponsorship. SARDA has been a beneficiary for the last few years and we have been absolutely blown away by the amazing work that SARDA does with children living with disabilities and special needs,” said Devin Heffer, Hollywoodbets brand and communications manager. “Each horse carrying a child would require three volunteers. Everyone working at SARDA are volunteers. Libby and the SARDA team are doing incredible things here, giving these young children an experience that uplifts them, empowers them and strengthens their bond with nature. But most importantly it gives them and their loved one’s hope, and we at Hollywoodbets live by the motto that hope is power.” SARDA is a non¬-profit organisation supported by the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and provides specialised horse-riding classes to mentally and physically handicapped children of varying degrees. The wellbeing of these children is prioritised with classes at no cost to children up to the age of 16. Instructors and trainee instructors are volunteers and are readily available to provide training sessions to the children, for five mornings a week at the Ridge Top Stables in Shongweni. The horse-riding sessions, which include sensory experiences such as touching the leaves and barks of trees, have proven to make a mean-

Gold Circle has also partnered with the Hollywood Foundation in matching a R50 000 sponsorship for SARDA. Libby Durk, chairperson of SARDA Durban said the organisation is sincerely grateful for the sponsorship from the Hollywood Foundation and that being able to purchase new and additional equipment means the world to them. “The children who participate in our therapeutic riding lessons are special children with special needs. The new equipment will brighten our arena, therefore, brightening the lives of these special children. Thank you, Hollywood Foundation.” In addition, the foundation contributed an array of equipment to make the lives of the children even better at the organisation. Some of the equipment included grooming kits, tables, chairs, rainbow reins, arena equipment and ladder reins. The handover of the equipment took place at Ridgetop Equestrian Centre in Assagay.

Early childhood development and sports development continues to be a major focus for the Hollywood Foundation. The team also seeks to actively make a positive contribution in the lives of many children across the country, despite their physical and mental capabilities. Known as equine therapy, the work that SARDA does with horses promotes physical, psychological and occupational healing in people with disabilities, and is firmly aligned to the Hollywood Foundation’s core focus values.

Gift of the Givers steps in to ease Day Zero water woes Water has been the focus of Mandela Day efforts in the drought stricken Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) as Gift of the Givers officially opened its 13th drilled borehole at Walmer High School in Gqeberha. President Cyril Ramaphosa joined by Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Eugene Johnson also spent Mandela Day in Gqeberha, leading a site inspection of the Nooitgedacht Water Treatment Works and thereafter a cleanup of the Swartkops River at Veeplaas which is used to transfer water from the Gariep Dam into the water-strained Metro. Dams currently stand at 14.8% collectively, of which only 2.37% is usable water. Water usage is currently 31 million litres above the target of 230 million litres per day. “The collaboration between the NMB municipality, business chamber and its members and Gift of the Givers in dealing with the Day Zero challenge is memorable,” said Gift of the Givers CEO, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. “Gift of the Givers is currently drilling its 13th borehole in the Metro, has expanded three drilled previously, resuscitated one at the K9 unit and three owned by the municipality, potentially adding 4 million litres a day to the grid. “Cerebos contributes an additional 500 000L fresh drinking water per day through its desalination plant, generously transported by 3 x 35 000L water tankers sponsored by Coke to Gift of the Givers,” said Sooliman.

The Givers were working closely with the municipality’s engineering team, led by Barry Martin, and would provide JoJo tanks to the 50 water collection points being set up by the municipality, he said. Drilling additional boreholes, resuscitating dormant municipal boreholes, harnessing water from spring sites, providing many more water tanks – 500 have been sponsored by Africa Tanks – bringing in two more water tankers and “opening” viable boreholes pointed out by the community is part of Gift of the Givers’ ongoing intervention. “Providing boreholes at various schools serves learners, educators, their families and surrounding communities, many of whom have large numbers of informal settlements, the inhabitants of which are in dire economic circumstances and require compassionate assistance,” said Sooliman. “The water capacity and reserves at Livingstone Hospital, the largest hospital in the Metro, Gqeberha Provincial Hospital, Elizabeth Donkin Psychiatric Hospital and Jose Pearson TB Hospital have all been substantially advanced,” he added. Mchunu said boreholes were one of the pillars of the interventions. “Even with the completion of boreholes, it does not mean that people must relax, it’s merely a security measure. The more boreholes we drill the more restrictions will apply. We want more water to be available than we are consuming,” he said.

Tyger Valley Centre focused on children and food security this Mandela Day

One of the themes of this year’s Mandela Day was food security, and Tyger Valley Centre took the mantra “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are” to heart by visiting and supporting two Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Cape Town. On July 18, Tyger Valley Centre’s management staff did their 67 minutes at the Drie Beertjies ECD in Fisantkraal, Durbanville - by building a vegetable garden for the children, before handing over lunchboxes. Outdoor play equipment, educational toys and learning material was also donated. That afternoon, more educational toys and equipment was handed over to Ukama Community Centre in Capricorn Park, Muizenburg, alongside a hot meal for the 80 children. “Tyger Valley wants to make a significant impact in our communities,” said the Centre’s marketing manager, Alleta van Wyk. “Malnutrition is a big problem in the Western Cape, especially amongst children. We believe that optimum nutrition early in life can permanently alter an individual’s development direction and maximise their potential, so Tyger Valley Centre decided to contribute positively and help to combat the issue with a healthy meal and by creating a sustainable veggie garden for the school.” The children at the ECD’s range in age from two to six years’ old and were surprised by the Tyger Valley Centre mascots -Tom and Tina, who entertained them on the day. During the 67 minutes, the staff focused on showing the

children how to plant seasonal vegetable seedlings and teaching them how to take care of their organic garden in a chemical-free way. Mandela Day this year was focused on promoting community and home-based gardens, supporting fruit and indigenous tree planting, and creating awareness of the intersections between food security and climate change. “The impact that we created was beyond expectation from the Drie Beertjies ECD,” Van Wyk said. “We have expanded our selection of educational learning equipment and material that was donated, thus ensuring longevity for future children in need, and the garden will create sustainable growth of vegetables that will support future savings for the ECD.” Tyger Valley Centre is co-owned by Pareto Limited and Momentum Metropolitan Life Limited, and each owner has invested equally in the two ECD’s with the focus being learning and development of children in their early childhood phase. “The children had an amazing Mandela Day, and we are grateful to Tyger Valley Centre for their commitment to the seven ECD’s under our care,” said Ukama Community Foundation founder, Janine Roberts. “Our schools are underdeveloped and the equipment such as the mats, crayons, books, educational toys and play equipment goes a long way to supporting the early development in the children in these communities.”

Church makes higher education realisable with #67minutes initiative The United Congregation Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) in Gugulethu put aside their usual activities on Saturday, July 16 - and turned the premises into a higher institution application hub as part of their Mandela Day #67minutes initiative.

They helped about 100 youths to either apply to go back to school, or to further their studies at tertiary institutions. Applications were done both digitally and manually, with the organisers volunteering to deliver hard copies at various campuses. Mihlali Mafanya, one of the organisers, said: “We identified a gap and a need within the respective previouslydisadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. Many young people would love to go back to school and further their studies, but needed some guidance and direction. “We also saw that with tertiary institutions having applications done online, some young people don’t necessarily have access to resources like data and technology to complete online applications and take a step forward in pursuing their dreams and aspirations. Therefore UCCSA was committed to occupying that vacant space by stepping in to ensure that we are present to close the gap. We are making education fashionable.” She said the church had collected prospectus and application forms from local universities and TVET colleges. The initiative also attracted applicants from outside Gugulethu. Okuhle Klass, 18, from Kensington, saw a post on social media and knew it was an opportunity not to be missed.

She applied to study teaching. “I was struggling with my applications, as I wasn’t really familiar with the institutions and the online application system. They [UCCSA] were so helpful and I learned so much. I came back well-informed of what I should be doing and focusing on as a matric student,” said the Windermere High School pupil. Aviwe Makopiyana, 22, from Gugulethu, applied to study law. She said the programme was effective, and one-ofa-kind to be hosted at a local church. She advised young people to look out for such opportunities and to take advantage of them. “I’ve even received emails acknowledging my application,” she said. Participants were taught the importance of having a vision and working hard towards achieving their goals. Mafanya thanked all stakeholders who co-operated with them in making the day a success, including the SA Police Service in Gugulethu.

Cape Times and Nando’s do good in handing over meals on Mandela Day For Mandela Day, members of the Cape Times team facilitated the handover of meals sponsored by Nando’s Durbanville to youth at the Durbanville Children’s Home. Nando’s general manager for the Western Cape, Itumeleng Mogotsi and regional marketing manager, Christelle Scott were among the Nando’s team. The Durbanville Children’s Home is home to 144 children and is one of the oldest children’s homes in South Africa. “The children come from environments that are not conducive to nurturing and growing well-grounded, well-adjusted and spirited young people,” says Johanna Strauss, manager for marketing and fundraising at Durbanville Children’s Home.
