Editor’s note
TRAVELLING was a luxury growing up, so when we planned road trips to Gauteng to see family, it was a real treat. I was excited about the journey ahead and to see my cousins, even if that meant squeezing into my aunt’s white Toyota Cressida at 5am. Of course, as we didn’t have GPS in the late 1990s/early 2000s, we got hopelessly lost. We relied on the direction provided by locals to help us reach our destination. Those long drives showcased some of the most beautiful landscapes. Memories I will cherish forever. Since then, I have been fortunate to indulge in all forms of family travel. I travelled with my grandparents on a plane for the first time as a fresh-out-of-school teenager, bonded with my siblings during a seascape, and heard stories about my late father during a mother-son getaway to the Drakensberg. Each experience holds a special place in my heart. Family travel, whether you are a toddler, teenager or an adult travelling with your grandparents, is a great way to reduce stress and help forge stronger connections. The pandemic has contributed to the rise of multigenerational travel with families booking exclusive-use villas in some of the most picturesque destinations. This month’s edition pays homage to family travel, offering you ideas on how to plan a trip that everyone can enjoy. We feature some of South Africa’s famed family destinations, hotels and activities you can enjoy for less than R100. Our Lifestyle live editor Marchelle Abrahams, who has mastered the art of family travel, shares the dos and don’ts of travelling with children – a must-read for parents hoping to explore with their children. The magazine has plenty of content to keep you entertained this month. Grab a cup of coffee and let the family travel planning begin. Until next month.

The different stages of family travel Clinton Moodley looks at several options, from babymoons to multigenerational travel
1
Babymoons Parents take babymoons a few months before they welcome their new child into the world. Babymoons are a great way for couples to enjoy time by themselves and discover new destinations before their baby arrives. Parents can enjoy babymoons before the birth of any of their children. Travelling with toddlers A child's first few months or years can take a toll on parents, from late nights, little or no sleep and no social life. Most parents book holidays with their young children to destinations that offer family-friendly activities and where they can put their feet up. Ease your toddler into travelling with a day or overnight trip close to home. That way, you can assess what they like and dislike. Travelling with teens Most families plan holidays with their teenage children before they move out or start university. Trips like these strengthen the family bond and help the teenagers navigate their way into adulthood. Teenagers usually choose the location and plan the activities while the parents foot the bill. Sibling travel As siblings get older and start to afford their own travels, many go on sibling holidays away from their partners, children or friends. During the trip, siblings rekindle bonds, partake in childhood activities and make new travel memories to share with their families. Travelling with your kids and their partners This form of travel is the ideal way to forge a relationship between parents and their children’s partners. If you want to prevent the trip from turning into a complete disaster, perhaps create an itinerary that offers free time for everyone. Travel with the grandparents Once grandparents have retired and have a few rands to spare, they usually spoil their grandchildren to a holiday. Most times, no parents are allowed. These trips are more spontaneous and a fun way to make memories with the grandparents. Multigenerational travel Multigenerational travel is a trip taken by three or more generations of a family. Most families book private villas or spacious self-catering accommodation for a few days to reconnect with their loved ones.

Travelling with kids Tips and tricks for a stress-free trip
MARCHELLE ABRAHAMS
A SUNNY spot to read my book, that's all I crave when going on holiday. Do I ever get the chance to sweep my fingers through the overused, brittle pages? Nope, but it's a fantasy that I hold dear. It's a whole different story for my kids. When planning a trip, their requirements rival that of a pop group's tour rider. And sometimes I think my eldest places these outrageous demands on me just to get a kick out of my reaction. No, dear son you cannot get 24 hour butler access and a PS5 in your room, and no, the pool does not come heated. As soon as the planning starts, so do the questions. Is there internet access? What about a pool? Can we take the pets? As a parent, I’ve learnt to carefully sift through the craziness until we have a complete wishlist
of what my children's great expectations are. But sometimes even the best laid plans get shot to a glorious piece of turd. I get reminded of this exactly an hour into our holidays when we're on the road and I turn the music up to drown out the protestations and shouts of “how long still?” and “I need to use the bathroom”. So for the sake of keeping your sanity, I've outlined some tips to keep in mind when embarking on the great South African family holiday. Start at 1 Before you start planning, get the family together and ask each one what their requirements are. Most kids will say wi-fi access and a water source. Once you have your wishlist together, then you'll have some sort of idea of where you're heading. Self-catering or hotel?
