This year, I decided to celebrate 35 authors as they chose to be featured on a billboard by the TKTS Broadway ticket booth in the heart of New York City’s Times Square. I thought when I am purchasing a book, I’m not just giving a gift; I’m also supporting authors, illustrators, publishers, and the entire literary community. In my own small way, I’m also promoting literacy and helping to ensure that books remain accessible to everyone. When choosing books this season, consider these tips: • Ask the recipient for recommendations: This is a great way to find a book they are sure to love. • Shop at local independent bookstores: These stores offer a curated selection of books and can help you find something unique and special. • Get the book personalized: Many bookstores offer this service, which adds a special touch to any gift. • Include a handwritten note: Share why you chose the book and what you hope they will get out of it. • Give the gift of time: Offer to read the book with the recipient and discuss it together. • Support literacy organizations: Donate books to children in need or volunteer your time to help others learn to read. Author: VALTER OF SALT LAKE CITY: THE MAGIC OF THE TABLE is the Winner of the 2023 NYC BIG BOOK AWARD for Coffee-table Book.
E
laine M. Bapis collaborated with Valter Nassi for five years, ultimately publishing in 2019. Elaine, now retired, was a professor at Westminster College and the University of Utah where she taught literature, history, and film. She is also the author of Camera and Action: American Film as Agent of Social Change, 1965-1975, a cultural history of film. Along with numerous published essays, Elaine contributed a chapter in This Is the Plate: Utah Food Traditions. She received her Bachelor of Arts at Weber State University and her Masters of Arts and Ph.D. from the University of Utah. Valter Nassi was in the restaurant business for more than half a century. He began his exceptional career in Sardinia Italy. His culinary expertise spanned the world London, Switzerland, Italy, Kenya, and New York City. In the 1990s Valter moved to Salt Lake City. From 2003 to 2012, he was the face of Cucina Toscana; in 2012 he launched his award-winning restaurant, Valter’s Osteria, altering the culinary landscape of Salt Lake City. Valter Nassi died Sept. 20, 2022 at age 76 really reads more like a memoir, yet it is visually stimulating with sensational and appetizing photography. It stunningly captures his life.
GABBY: The story of food is the story of life, this was Valter’s philosophy. ELAINE: Walter believed that food was not just for nourishment and that we focus so much on the science of food that we forget how transformative it is for our daily lives. Food for him was joy. It was love and it was transformative. It had the power to transform a night to joy and laughter and camaraderie. So that, for Walter, is the point of food.
ELAINE: Valter’s bigger than life personality had to be captured in something that recognized that part of his essence. So we decided that we had to show the part of Walter that was so unique in the restaurant. That was the spontaneity of the moment. Part of what we did was to present a pretty normal memoir and then to open it up in part to photographs that stressed that spontaneity.

made of. To understand that there’s a process before the food gets to the table. What happens from seed to cultivation to watering, distribution, and then off to the restaurant. The photographs relayed that part of the creative process to him. GABBY: Valter often said “Salt Lake City, my city”. It seemed to be a match made in heaven. ELAINE: Salt Lake City gave Valter a chance to present his repertoire and his culinary repertoire as he loved it and with all kinds of passion. Salt Lake City was also at a point where it was changing its culinary landscape, and Walter influenced that landscape forever. His was probably the original farm to table restaurant. It was that kind of hospitality and that kind of approach to food on the plate and in the process of food that embraced Walter and that Walter embraced. I think he felt like he was finally there at the place that he’d always wanted to be. GABBY: How do you think Valter would most like to be remembered? ELAINE: One thing that he was very adamant about is that you don’t need a recipe to be able to make food from the heart. In fact, he asked you to put the recipe aside, go to your refrigerator, take out some ingredients, find four or five that go together and begin your own culinary adventure and bring family to the table. Lannon Author: Nine Days Nine Days, a 2023 NYC Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite in Death & Dying, is author Judy Lannon’s debut novel. Raised on the south shore of Massachusetts with idyllic summers spent in Cape Cod, Judy joins us from Orleans, Cape Cod where she resides with her husband and their two poodles. GABBY: What does the title Nine Days signify?
JUDY: It’s about family. No matter how much we bring to the table or how much is brought by somebody else, we’re family. Family comes together when they need to. I made sure that the Austin family, even though they had so many things going on with each sibling, came together as a united front for their mother.
JUDY: The title signifies the actual nine days that I spent with my mother when she was in Cape Cod Hospital. She was 94 years old. She was actually there much longer, but I spent nine days with her there while they tried to figure out what her diagnosis was.
GABBY: How has writing Nine Days changed or altered your perspective about aging parents and our role as caregivers?
GABBY: Is that what inspired you to write Nine Days?
JUDY: I think it’s opened my eyes. I’m more respectful of older people. I’m finding that they are not invisible, that they should still be given respect and courtesy.
JUDY: It did. I had no intentions of ever writing a book. The book is fiction. I’ve been told that it reads like a memoir. I took parts of what had actually happened to me and my mother in the hospital and then created a family and a fictional story around that.
GABBY: Please give us a preview of your new novel, The Making of Genevieve.
I ran into an acquaintance a little bit less than a year after my mother had passed. Her father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. I advised her about all the great stuff my mother had done for us.
JUDY: She’s the narcissistic mother in Nine Days. This story begins when she’s 16 and it goes right up to when she’s 94. It focuses on how she became the person that she became and what made Genevieve be who she was.
She had a will, she had a trust, she had the health care proxy, all that minutia. Then I told her some funny things that happened because I just feel in life you need to laugh. I just started writing the words nine days, nine days for a daughter to be with her mother, nine days for a mother to be with her daughter.

Men-in-the-Middle: earned a Distinguished Favorite in the 2023 NYC Big Book Award for both the Career and Cultural/Social Issues categories. Kori spent 15 years in corporate communications at various Fortune 500 companies and an additional 10 years as a corporate Vice President at ConAgra Foods. She is an expert on domestic hunger, corporate philanthropy, and cause branding. Kori has been honored with the CEO Award, Chairman-Award, and Spirit Award at the respective companies where she worked. She is now a strategic communicator, author, speaker and facilitator. Kori is originally from Chicago. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri–Columbia and a master’s in Communication from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. What’s happening below the surface is there is some fear, there’s some uncertainty, and there’s a lot of ambiguity. In a very general sense, that has made men uncomfortable from speaking up.
GABBY: You interviewed men across corporate America about gender equity in the workplace. Who are men in the middle? KORI: Right after MeToo we had extreme views in the media. It was great to have people raising the bar on normalizing this conversation. Then I noticed that we heard the stories of men in the news that were doing egregious behaviors.
GABBY: Kori, you said something very interesting, “To get men to be part of the solution, we might have to acknowledge that they face issues too”. I think many of us, specifically women, are really surprised to hear that.
Then we had some men that were advocating for women. But really, this majority of men, men that I worked with every day, were silent. The men in the middle were not saying much at all. In the interviews I learned they actually had a lot to say.
KORI: This is the part that’s fascinating. Since doing this, I’ve talked to women friends who are like, my gosh, Corey, why are you even saying this? We’ve been oppressed for years. I’ve talked to men who said, Corey, you’re not a man. You can’t speak for us. It really is that point of acknowledging that we all want to be seen, heard, and acknowledged right at the end of the day. Men are just not socialized to talk about these issues. We know that men commit suicide three times more than women do. There’s a lot of pressure that’s happening on men and the stereotype of what a man should be. If we don’t acknowledge those issues, then we can’t open up and have those conversations and really change the narrative that this is not just a women’s issue, this is for men and women.
GABBY: Why do you think that men are so reticent to speak up about gender and gender equity? KORI: Men told me when I interviewed them that they thought gender equity was a women’s issue. What I was fascinated by at the end of the day is that these men actually believed in the business case for diversity. They totally understood that the more diversity in the leadership positions, in particular, women, would increase innovation, financial returns.

ori Reed is a passionate advocate for gender equity, only too aware that people put limitations on gender. In her first non-fiction book, Men-in-the-Middle, Reed, who has degrees in Journalism and Communication Studies, with 25 years of experience speaking and consulting at Fortune 500 companies, takes on the question of where men fit into the equation. Deciding to research rather than assume, she created an interview guide, tapped into her expansive network, and reached out to 100 men who were managers and above, to find some answers. Thirty men responded—Reed notes that the responses were fascinating-- and combining these conversations with secondary research (the book has a bibliography of over 20 pages), she’s written an engaging book that is both informative, comprehensive, and a practical guide. Each chapter introduces a man (first names only) with a quote that defines his position on men and women in the workplace. Reed became interested in the project when she notices that after the #MeToo movement, women were speaking out but the men were silent. She began working on the book in 2018 and says it took about 18 months. The conversations ranged from an hour to an hour and a half. What she learned was that while the men might be silent in the office, they had a lot to say. One man surprised her when he said, “I am so glad to talk about this; I’ve been wanting to for the longest time.” Another was quite happy to have the pendulum swing to the side of women and wait for the balance. Mostly, Reed concludes, there’s an element of awkwardness, men afraid they will say or do something offensive. The root cause of issues, she says, is “not being able to talk about them because it doesn’t feel safe. And she adds, “the F-word has eight letters; feelings!” Reed encourages us to acknowledge that men face issues and challenges and we should engage them in conversation, open conversations that look at new and creative ways to reach gender equity. Toward that goal, Reed ends each chapter with two sections titled: Key Takeaways and Questions to Ask or Ponder. The book, Reed states, is “primarily geared toward people who work in a corporate environment and want to give voice to the male perspective to freshen the dialogue on creating an inclusive culture. “RUN”, Reed advises—”reframe the issue, understand perspectives, and negotiate to find common goals—together in healthy, open dialogue that values leading with curiosity, asking questions, and listening actively.”
