ERE WE ARE AT THE LAST EDITION OF THE YEAR. IT’S BEEN AN EVENTFUL ONE FOR THE BUILDING DESIGN INDUSTRY BUT IF I HAD TO CHOOSE A SIGNATURE THEME FOR 2015, IT WOULD BE THE YEAR OF GLOBALISATION. What do I mean? Well, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Steve Evans from Leffler Simes Architects pop up on your TV in recent times, talking about the great opportunities to do building design business in Asia. If you haven’t seen the advertising I’m talking about, the government has sponsored a major national publicity campaign promoting the benefits of the three separate Free Trade Export Agreements between Australia and Korea, Japan and China. In the architectural sector, they’re particularly keen to promote the opportunities for Australian businesses in China. Leffler Simes – perhaps best known for their prowess with bulky goods retail projects for the likes of Ikea and Harvey Norman - have become something of a poster child for the campaign. The Sydney and Melbournebased practice is one of several from Australia who have been making serious inroads in China over recent years. There are of course the high profile examples like the PTW-designed Water Cube aquatic centre, one of the stars in the Beijing Olympics. the large practices like Woods Bagot and Hassell with offices in Asia. What’s become evident is that small and medium sized firms are able to establish themselves in these huge Asian markets. CK Designworks has done it China. Leffler Simes too. But the extent of the work they could carry out there has been quite limited. Until now. The new China Australia Free Trade Agreement – or ChAFTA, as some call it – means wholly foreign-owned Australian companies can undertake a range of defined projects anywhere in the country. And if they have a base in the special Shanghai Free Trade Zones, they will have a chance to undertake the really big, high value projects. Leffler Simes, for example, now goes from offering conceptual design to delivering full service architecture work. On the other side of the coin, however, there are risks involved in the FTAs. Many industry players are warning it could exacerbate the problem of non-compliant building products entering the country, including everything from glass and steel to manufactured wood, windows and imitation electrical goods. As we’ve reported throughout the year, the costly and dangerous problems are a huge and growing concern for those responsible for the quality of Australian buildings. As we go to print, the industry is eagerly awaiting the senate inquiry into non-conforming building products, due to report by 3 December 2015.

NEWS WORKPLACE RESEARCH RETHINKS DESIGN STANDARDS AND CODES IN AUSTRALIA Hassell and Arup have released new research which suggests rethinking the current building codes that impact how we arrange work spaces. The two leading architecture and design practices teamed up to deliver the research project, ‘Cracking the Capacity Code: Rethinking building occupancy in a new era of work’. The researchers say exploring the issues which they identified could unlock new forms of value in workplaces. “We’re experiencing denser office working environments and organisations that have adopted flexible working are potentially at risk of exceeding current building regulations and certifications,” said Dr Agustin Chevez, Senior Researcher at Hassell. “The potential of contemporary offices could be increased by rethinking the way buildings are currently arranged.” The paper concludes it is a problem that the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia’s definition of an office and its nominated density have not changed since first introduced in 1990.

“This is a problem because it fails to acknowledge the intervening changes in technology and work practices which, amongst other changes, have created denser environments. As such, contemporary office buildings, especially those that have adopted flexible working practices, are not only being limited in their potential,
but are at a high risk of exceeding their design capacity,” it says. “Our research suggests that efforts should not focus on nominating a higher density, but on developing a framework that better reflects the nature of occupancy in contemporary work environments.”

DEARTH OF CLEAR INFORMATION ON BLAMED FOR SLUGGISH GROWTH O OF AUSTRALIA’S GREEN HOUSING A recent paper co-authored by PRDnationwide’s National Research Manager Dr Diaswati Mardiasmo suggests that an information gap is preventing Australians from actively participating in sustainable housing. Mardiasmo attributed the passive attitude towards sustainable housing from some Australians to the lack of clear information about the many features and their benefits. Despite the increased regulatory focus on sustainability practice, she explains that the delivery rate of sustainable housing is below expectations within the property market. According to Mardiasmo, this is due to the absence of engagement and initiative taken by stakeholders in adapting to sustainable housing practices. Mardiasmo suggests that key stakeholders such as developers, investors and buyers do not know where to start due to very limited data and research available in this field. She explained that the absence of adequate information on sustainable housing features,

WMK ARCHITECTURE ADOPT INNOVATIVE MIXED-MODE VENTILATION STRATEGY AT SYDNEY HIGH SCHOOL

MK ARCHITECTURE AND A TEAM OF CONSULTANTS HAVE MET AN AMBITIOUS CHALLENGE SET BY A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TO REINVENT THE TRADITIONAL EDUCATION BUILDING DESIGN AND, IN THE PROCESS, CREATED A HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED MIXED-MODE BUILDING VENTILATION STRATEGY. Stephen Harris, principal of The Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS) in Sydney, has led the vision for the school’s new building works since day dot, requesting from the very beginning that the architect’s concept for their new admin, science and student services building align with the school’s collaborative and innovative learning paradigm. WMK won the brief to deliver the new project as part of a design competition and have since completed the second stage of building works—a new state-of-the-art building with science rooms, student service facilities, a canteen and a new performance space, all serviced by a mixed-mode ventilation system. The building is set out in a sequence of multilevel pavilion buildings which sit beneath a 3,000sqm canopy structure that generates energy, harvests rainwater and cools the spaces below. It is serviced by a sophisticated mixed-mode ventilation system which uses a variety of cutting edge building products and adopts the latest in building automation technology.
The Natural Ventilation System (NVS) at NBCS automatically controls the thermal comfort of the building occupants by monitoring both internal and external conditions and adjusting mechanical air conditioning and operable windows to suit. The NVS provides natural ventilation to each of the building’s 10 Natural Ventilation Zones (NVZ) during favourable conditions but will call for mechanical heating or cooling as required when internal temperatures are above or below the predetermined set points.

An EBSA Ecobus NVS controls and incorporates all internal sensors, weather station, wall switches, touch screens and programming logic for the building. Other than the Ecobus, the major building products at play in NBCS’s NVS include high-level Powerlouvres from Breezway, 170 automated thermally broken aluminium Capral Futureline awning and sash windows, and automated double glazed Schneider MP2 Louvres from EBSA. WMK chose to use a Variable Refrigerant Volume System from Aircool to provide relief when temperatures, humidity and wind levels are too extreme to have the windows open. Operated by the BMS, the system circulates the minimum amount of refrigerant needed at any one time and also enables individual climate control of each NVZ. All of the components are plugged into the Building Management System (BMS) which controls the mechanical heating / cooling within the various zones. The building also has a subterranean passive labyrinth which sits between rainwater storage tanks and tempers air before it moves up through the interior spaces. While mixed-mode ventilation systems are by no means new, the NBCS by WMK Architecture shows the system’s compatibility with new building automation and BMS technology. Due to its infancy, the NBCS building is yet to have a thorough long-term test on its efficiency and energy savings, however since the students moved into their new building all reports are that it is incredibly comfortable to work in. If nothing else WMK Architecture have provided a test bed for architects looking for an alternative ventilation strategy to mechanical or natural ventilation systems which can provide both high-levels of comfort for building occupants as well as a greener alternative to air conditioning.

MIXED-MODE VENTILATION: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO IMPLEMENT IT
W
HILE TRADITIONAL MECHANICAL HEATING VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) SYSTEMS ARE STILL WIDELY USED IN AUSTRALIA, CONTEMPORARY CONCERNS FOR IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE AND “LIVEABILITY” OF BUILDINGS HAS LED TO AN INCREASED INTEREST IN ALTERNATIVES SUCH AS NATURAL VENTILATION AND MIXED-MODE SYSTEMS. Major benefits of HVAC, particularly in deep plan and larger office buildings, is that they alleviate many of the problems associated with a naturally ventilated building such as noise, dust, insects, heavy winds, odours and uncomfortable temperatures. However, there are some studies suggesting that a mixed-mode ventilation system of HVAC and natural ventilation, in combination with good passive design, can provide sufficient indoor air quality to keep occupants happy while reducing their reliance on mechanical air treatment. Typically a mixed-mode system operates in either of two modes and is best used for a buildings’ perimeter spaces or for narrow planned buildings with good cross ventilation. The first is the
natural ventilation mode which uses fresh external air from operable windows or dampers to cool the internal spaces and relies predominantly on the stack effect for hot air to be expelled through high-level exhausts. The second is the mechanical mode and sees the windows closed and the HVAC switched on, and is used only when the external temperatures are too hot or too cold for natural ventilation, or when there are heavy winds or rain. Control of the operable windows can be manual or automatic and, in keeping with current trends in Australia towards automated buildings, we’re seeing more automated windows systems come to the market that are also compatible with Building Management Systems (BMS). Some window manufacturers offer built in automated systems that can be controlled by a BMS and that come with inputs for automated weather stations and sensors that detect smoke, rain,
hail, temperature, wind, time and smog. Others advertise that their products can be easily automated with add-on products like actuators and reed switches and can also incorporated into a BMS. These products render manual operation from building occupants—one of the most difficult-to-control influences on a building’s environmental impact—unnecessary, as the BMS detects when it is optimal to open and close windows, and to operate the HVAC. Some of the problems associated with the manually operation of a building’s HVAC and natural ventilation, like occupants leaving windows open with the HVAC on for example, can therefore be avoided with automated mixed-mode air-conditioning. Read on to see five new automated window systems and five new air conditioning systems that can used for mixed-mode ventilation:

NEW COATINGS ON THE BLOCK: WHAT’S COOL AND WHO’S WHO IN CONCRETE SURFACE PROTECTION [WORDS] NATHAN JOHNSON
T
HE MAJOR REASON FOR COATING CONCRETE IS TO STOP WATER CONTAMINANTS, SALTS AND CHEMICALS GETTING TO THE EMBEDDED REINFORCED STEEL AND CAUSING OXIDISATION, CONCRETE CANCER AND CRACKING. There is a massive range of concrete protection products available that fulfil these objectives to varying degrees and the major players, outside of the basic acrylic sealers, are epoxies, polyurethanes, polyureas and, more recently, polyurethane methacrylate (PUMA), and there are a host of companies in Australia that can offer versions of most. Generally speaking, epoxies are cheaper and have great resistance to chemicals, polyurethanes will flex with moving concrete and resist cracking, polyureas are quick drying, and PUMAs can be applied in extreme temperatures. While at times, specifying concrete coating products may seem arduous, incorrect specification is worse, and choosing the wrong coating can have horrible ramifications that are costly both in the immediate and long-term. Appropriately, concrete coating manufacturers will nearly always recommend you seek a coating specialist, usually one accredited to apply their product, before specifying and applying their product, particularly for use on concrete flooring. Sam O’Neill of Poly-Tech Industrial Services Australia, who supply and apply the whole spectrum of concrete coating products, says that the most important factor to consider before specifying a coating for a concrete surface is the environmental forces it will be subject to. “You need to ensure that the coating on the concrete is sufficient for its environment, so if you’re coating a floor with high-foot or forklift traffic you’ll need thicker builds and you might need to make it non-slip if it is to be walked on by the public,” he explains. “Protecting concrete from cleaning cycles and regimes is also another consideration if you’re in a food processing plant where health and safety of food is an issue because the coating will have to stand up to cleaning chemicals as well as other corrosive factors like blood, fats and oils etc.” From there, as O’Neill suggests, you should consider things such the product’s level of volatile organic compounds (VOC), the speed at which the concrete surface needs to be turned around for use and whether the surface needs to capable of being applied during extreme ambient and concrete temperatures. Here are few more factors to consider before selecting a concrete coating product:

• How fast do you need to turn the surface around? Some products can be walked on within hours, others need days before they are fully cured

PERFORMANCE NEEDED • Will it be exposed to chemicals? Which chemicals? • Will it be exposed to temperature fluctuations, heat from cleaning processes or low temperatures (refrigerators and freezers)? • What impact will it be subject to: high foot traffic, forklift traffic or any traffic with steel wheels?
• How difficult is your space to coat? Some products are easy to use in tight spaces and around drains etc. while others are sprayed on, need a lot of careful masking to address overspray and will “curl up” if not properly adhered around drains, crevices etc. • Maintenance: will it need to be cleaned regularly with chemicals, will it need recoating regularly? • Cost Below are eleven products that are available to the Australian market and suitable for different applications. ADVERTISING FEATURE – ROBERTSON’S BUILDING PRODUCTS
CHANGING DIRECTION – USING BRICKS
T
HE FIRST HOUSE IN AUSTRALIA BUILT IN PETERSEN BRICKS HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETED, AND THE OWNERS HAVE MOVED IN. IT IS A VILLA IN MELBOURNE FACED WITH CHARCOAL GREY KOLUMBA. Ian and Nicola Minchin were discussing the exterior finishes with their architect Robert Simeoni. The Melbourne-based architect uses zinc for many of his houses. While zinc was something the Minchin’s were open to, they werenít quite convinced it was what they were after for their new home in South Yarra. The decision could have gone a number of ways, had it not been for a series of images of a new brick that was about to arrive in Australia. Peter Robertson, who has a long history with bricks and is now the Australian distributor for Petersen Brick from Denmark, showed the couple images of the Kolumba K55. Robertson, director of Robertson’s Building Products, has been at the forefront of the brick industry for decades. The slim, charcoal grey, handmade brick, made the Minchin’s, as well as Simeoni, rethink their scheme. “It wasn’t that we were adverse to using bricks. Robert showed us a number of the houses to which he had delivered various bricks. But it was either the colour or their texture that didn’t capture our imaginations,” says Nicola. While the images of the Kolumba K55 were enticing, the Minchin’s were completely ‘sold’ when the samples were handed to them. “Each handmade brick is slightly different, with each one displaying a set of thumbprints. None of them are perfectly straight. But that gives them that sense of artistry,” says Ian.
For Simeoni as well, the decision to change to brick was immediate after seeing the samples: As each length of brick varies, the job required highly skilled bricklayers. “It made the process a little more complex, but the result has been worth it. Kolumba has added texture to the house and this brick also suited the more abstract nature of the architectural composition.” says Simeoni, whose brief was a striking contemporary home using a simple palette of materials, with clean and minimal lines. Unlike the charcoal grey facade, the interior of the two-storey home is entirely white. “White was never in discussion. It was always going to be white,” says Nicola, who, with Ian, was keen to create a pristine white ‘canvas’ to display their fine contemporary paintings. White also appears in the white four metre-long white Corian bench which is used for most meals, from breakfast through to dinner.
The home’s rear elevation features generous glazing, with large glass sliding doors leading to the garden and terrace. A composition of bricks from the past on the boundary of the property also provides a fascinating dialogue between bricks from the past and present. The rear boundary, for example, features what was previously a wall and fireplace, once part of a Victorian home from the late 1800s. And on another boundary is a brick wall, which once formed part of a stable. Although these bricks and the Kolumba bricks are decades apart, there’s a sense of the handcrafted, with slight irregularities in each, beautifully adding to the rich patina of the Minchin’s home and the neighbourhood.

FIRE-RESISTANT PANEL PRODUCTS MEETING MULTI-RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS INSIDE AND OUT [WORDS] TRISTAN ‘TD’ DENNIS

AVING PROPER PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIREDAMAGED APARTMENT AND A FIREDAMAGED APARTMENT BLOCK. DESPITE THE FAR-REACHING CONSEQUENCES WHEN DEALING WITH MORE STOREYS AND HIGHER OCCUPANCIES, NON-COMPLIANCE IN REGARDS TO FIREPROTECTION IS STILL HIGHLY PREVALENT THROUGHOUT MULTI-RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION IN AUSTRALIA. A particular concern in the past couple of years has arisen following notable incidents in Melbourne and Brisbane where fires have spread rapidly throughout apartment blocks due to the non-compliant application of building panels. The incidents resulted in buildings being evacuated and millions of dollars in damages and both incidents could have been prevented. At the same time, there are also prominent cases that illustrate the effectiveness of fire rated systems. For example, in 2014 a fire broke out at a Karaoke Bar located in Burwood NSW and fully engulfed the bar with flames and heavy smoke and threatened to spread to adjoining residential properties. The building which housed the bar was severely damaged by the fire while the adjoining boarding properties suffered minimal and mainly cosmetic fire damage. That minimal damage suffered by the adjoining boarding properties was attributed by builders inspecting the property to the use of a fire rated Gyprock wall product.
BONDOR METECNOINSPIRE
A fire-rated walling panel with a rigid foam PIR (Polyisocyanurate) core enclosed in two skins of Australian-made BlueScope Colorbond steel, forming a strong and durable, fire– retardant panel. The Building Code of Australia (BCA) contains Deemed to Satisfy provisions for the Fire Resistance Level (FRL) for the internal walls and shafts, external walls, floors and ceilings of multi-residential constructions, which dictate the required structural adequacy, integrity and insulation of a system. The FRL represents the passive fire protection provided by a system, with the higher the number the longer the fire can be contained and the systems maintains.

Trapezoidal KS1000RW roof panels were selected, along with Kingspan Architectural Wall KS1000MM Mini Micro and KS1100CS Controlled Environment panel systems. But it was the integrated Kingspan pre-fabricated, membrane insulated gutters that were the crowning glory. Working with a sophisticated syphonic drainage system, Perth based firm T&Z Architects encouraged Wirtgen to cap off the range of high performing building products with seamless and integrated Kingspan insulated gutters. T&Z recognised that Kingspan’s insulated gutters were not only ideal for boundary and valley applications – but they ensured longevity, thermal performance and would contribute to the overall neat and functional aesthetics of the building. The T&Z project architect commented, “When we saw the design called for a syphonic drainage system, we realised we needed a guttering system that was able to meet more stringent requirements. Kingspan’s integrated and insulated gutter system works really well with syphonic drainage and we knew it was the product to recommend.” He went on to say, “With no exposed materials and continuous insulation under the roof where there is often a level of thermal shortage, Kingspan’s insulated guttering, roof and wall panel system working together as a whole, has more than met the standards for longevity, thermal andfire performance demanded by Wirtgen.”

FIRE PROTECTION Fire safety is a critical aspect of multi-residential design. With more storeys and higher occupancy, these constructions require higher fire resistance than stand-alone residences. The Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of these products is defined in the grading period, in minutes, for three performance criteria: • Structural adequacy – Failure occurs when the specimen collapses under load • Integrity – Failure occurs when the specimen develops cracks or openings through which flames or hot gases can pass • Insulation – Failure occurs when the temperature of the unexposed surface of the specimen reaches a certain level Therefore an FRL requirement for a wall of 90/60/30 would mean that the wall must maintain structural adequacy for 90 minutes, integrity for 60 minutes and insulation for 30 minutes.
ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE AND COMPLIANCE Noise is a growing cause of unrest in urban Australia. Reducing noise travelling between apartments is critical to the comfort of residents, hence the stringent building code requirements. Acoustic performance is measured on: Rw – ‘Weighted sound reduction Index’. Measured in decibels, it is an indication of the sound reduction of a wall or floor system at mid-frequencies such as speech. The higher the Rw the greater sound reduction. The minimum BCA requirement for separating a sole occupancy unit and corridor is Rw 50. Rw+Ctr – ‘Weighted sound reduction index with spectrum adaptation term’. Is used to account for low frequency noise such as home cinema, traffic etc. The higher the Rw+Ctr the greater the ability of the wall to control low frequency noise. The minimum BCA requirement for separating sole occupancy units is Rw+Ctr 50. Thus a greater sound reduction needed between residences. Ln,W+Ci – ‘Weighted Normalised Impact Sound pressure Level with Spectrum Adaptation Term’ Is the ability of the floor/ ceiling system to isolate impact noise such as foot falls. Unlike Rw and Rw+Ctr the lower rating the better it isolates sound. HOTEL SORRENTO One of Libart’s latest installations is for this historic hotel in Phillip Bay, Victoria. The brief called for the integration of a retractable roofing system to the dining area without compromising the original architecture of the iconic building. The contractor’s answer was a glass roof area that spanned 7.5 metres by 6.1 wide that consisted of three bays with four self-cleaning glass panels in each bay, yielding a 75 per cent retraction of the roof.

The Papilio retractable roof by Aalta Australia is a modern and stylish structure with single posts and a front beam. The supporting structure allows for straight drop screens to be fitted so that a totally weather-proof outdoor room can be created
To drive the roof, a three-phase motor and worm drive system with wall mounted control was implemented, and to top it off, the inclusion of a rain sensor to automatically close the roof in the event of rain or showers. The aluminium beams and support structure was powder coated to fit in with the historic sandstone building.

The Walumba Elders Centre was announced the winner at a gala dinner held in Sydney in October, edging ahead of a formidable field of sustainable projects and products from Australia’s leading design and building industry professionals. In 2011, the Giga people’s home town of Warmun was devastated by a catastrophic one in 300 year flood. Working with the community elders, the architects designed a new home based on cultural and social needs, considerate of the local landscape.

EVENT WRAP: THE FUTURE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

HE FIRST OF ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN’S ‘CONNECT’ EVENTS WAS HELD IN OCTOBER IN SYDNEY. THE EXCLUSIVE INVITATION ONLY EVENT HAD IN ATTENDANCE 40 LEADING RESIDENTIAL AND HIGH-DENSITY ARCHITECTS, BUILDING DESIGNERS, PROJECT MANAGERS AND CONSULTANTS WITH A SPECIFIC INTEREST IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. The day was focused around five rotating peer-to-peer discussions, a format designed to provide participants the opportunity for in-depth engagement, demonstrating thought leadership and sharing concerns and challenges among peers. We’re pleased to be able to report that attendees to the inaugural event were delighted with the opportunities they had to network with their peers, to learn about the latest materials and design trends, and to generally gain awareness of the opportunities and challenges others face in the industry. Meanwhile, by being at the table alongside independent experts, listening in and answer many of the more technical questions, each of the sponsors was able to develop a better understanding of the needs of the marketplace. These insights are expected to help inform the research and development of better products for Australia’s building industry.

INSPIRING PRESENTATIONS HOW REAL-TIME DATA CAN TRANSFORM APARTMENT DESIGN The day kicked off with a keynote from Director of The Institute of Digital Design Australia, Dr Ben Coorey. The Sydney-based parametric design expert and architect described some his group’s cutting edge research and how industry application of real-time data can inform better and more environmentally sustainable design. He explained how using design data in real time can provide early feedback in the conceptual design process. The emerging software will provide architects,
designers and developers with tools and technology that can improve high density residential projects, not only to be economically successful but also more environmentally sustainable. One of Australia’s most respected and accomplished environmentally sustainable residential building designers, Wheeler did not pull any punches in his assessment of the state of residential building stock that has evolved around Sydney to date.

N THE MEDIUM DENSITY RESIDENTIAL SECTOR, IT IS CRUCIAL THAT THE HOT WATER SYSTEM IS CONSIDERED AT THE EARLY DESIGN STAGE AS LIMITED SPACE PROVIDES LESS OPTIONS FOR FITTING HOT WATER SOLUTIONS.
Failure to consider the appropriate hot water technology and installation location can risk adverse impacts on aesthetics and amenity of a dwelling, devaluing the development in the short term and increasing running costs in the long term.
The design flexibility of the 4000S is derived from the fact that it is a room sealed appliance, with a co-axial flue system that facilitates installation of the 4000S in virtually any position in a medium density dwelling. The stylish European appearance of the 4000S may even give local specifiers the confidence to follow the lead of the Europeans, where such appliances are mounted directly on internal laundry or kitchen walls without the need to be obscured from view or hidden in cupboards.
MEDIUM DENSITY DESIGN
When designing medium density housing, architects and developers are required to ensure their buildings fit well into existing suburban areas and streetscapes. One important aspect of the design process is to consider the hot water system at an early stage as the configuration and limited space of medium density dwellings provide less options for fitting hot water solutions. HOT WATER SYSTEMS
Key considerations for specifying a hot water system for the medium density sector include the available energy sources for water heating, and the hot water technology to be employed. The two most common choices for the energy source are gas and electricity. While electricity will be an automatic choice, the decision to additionally connect gas is likely to be influenced by a consideration of the complete suite of appliances specified into the development for hot water, heating, and cooking. Electric hot water systems will have a lower capital cost, but are far more expensive to run than gas hot water systems. Additionally, gas hot water systems produce 25-33 per cent less greenhouse gases than electric water heaters. LOCATION

Natural gas or LPG continuous flow water heaters are suitable for internal or external installation, while electric continuous flow models are designed only for internal installation.

The challenge of keeping people cool when it’s hot in large volume buildings like school halls and sporting venues has traditionally been handled with energy intensive air conditioning or just put into the too hard basket. An effective alternative gaining interest in Australia and overseas is to bring summer breezes indoors using large diameter low speed fans. MacroAir, fans produce low disruption, quiet air movement in volumes of up to 9,800 cubic meters per minute at a tiny fraction of the cost of running air conditioning systems.
Even without any change in temperature, air moving at breeze speeds of just 3- 4 km/h has a cooling effect of 4 to 6°C making this technology a very attractive way of bridging the gap between energy intensive air conditioning or no cooling at all. In big spaces where people need to be kept comfortable, no alternative can match these big fans for lowest installed cost or energy efficiency.
What makes them so effective? It’s all a matter of size and blade design working on the simple principle that big, high efficiency fans use fewer watts to move air in volume than smaller fans.
