The nation is facing an obesity epidemic. One-third of adults and 17 percent of kids are obese. The child obesity statistic has tripled since 1980. The Y has a duty to help, and offers a variety of activities to combat this problem.

Throughout the year, we collaborate with our local schools, service organizations, businesses and community leaders to support initiatives to make our world a better place. Since joining the Y five years ago, Gus Rousonelos has lost more than 50 pounds. As a result of his hard work and with the unwavering support of his trainers, Lisa Behounek and Melissa Vidito, Gus is embracing a healthy lifestyle. Gus works out six days a week and takes Pilates and yoga classes at the YMCA. With his trainers’ help, he has learned to run long distances and has completed several 5K and 10K races. Member Code of Conduct In support of our Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, all members are expected to behave appropriately while using YMCA facilities and abide by the Member Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy. Those who choose to act inappropriately, as defined by YMCA staff, may be asked to leave the building. Repeat offenses may lead to a membership suspension or revocation of all privileges. AWAY Program - Always Welcome at the YMCA When you travel outside of the greater Joliet area, you can use your Y membership at more than 2,000 locations across the country. Some guest fees and limitations may apply. Please contact the Y you are visiting for details. Members from other YMCAs across the country may enjoy the amenities at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA branches up to twelve times per calendar year. Please contact the Membership Desk for hours, availability and additional information. Bring a Friend to the Y Current members may bring guests to the Y to share the YMCA experience. When a friend joins the Y, members receive one FREE month of membership. New members must maintain an active paid status for a minimum of two months. Plus, your friend will receive a gift for joining! See the Membership Desk for guest and referral details. Transferring Your Y Membership Members of other YMCAs looking to join the Galowich or Smith Family YMCAs should cancel their existing memberships and speak to a representative of our Membership Services Team. Those who agree with the mission of the YMCA, but choose not to take advantage of year-round facility use, may purchase a program membership. Program Members pay a low fee each year in order to be able to register for YMCA programs, but pay as much as twice the cost for YMCA programs and pay daily to use YMCA facilities. Program Members must also wait until two weeks before the start of each session to register for programs.

Program Members who choose to become Full Members will receive a credit for the remaining portion of their program membership, as well as a credit for the difference between the Full Member and Program Member rates for any programs in which they are currently enrolled, if the membership upgrade occurs within the first two weeks of the session.
Payment of Membership Fees Membership fees are not refundable and are payable through a monthly bank draft. The monthly amount is debited electronically from a checking account (debit or credit card also accepted) on the 15th or 28th of each month. Drafts are ongoing until cancelled in writing by the primary member, no less than 10 days prior to the scheduled draft date. Cancellations are accepted by fax, e-mail, mail or in person. Those who prefer to pay their membership fee annually may do so by cash, check or credit. A $25 fee will be charged for membership fees that are returned and unable to be processed. Membership Cards and Photo IDs It is necessary to present your membership card for admittance to the YMCA. Daily visitors and members who forget their cards must present photo identification and may be denied access. There is a $5 fee for replacing lost or damaged cards. Full Family Members using the Supervised Playroom must have their cards and their children’s cards when checking in.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact information, including e-mail, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the front desk during your next visit. Daily Visitors Those who are not interested in joining the YMCA, but wish to utilize the facility, have the option of purchasing a Daily Pass.

Upon entering the facility, all daily visitors will be asked to present a current photo ID and payment to our front desk staff. Those under the age of 18 must have a Parent/Guardian Authorization Form on file to utilize the Y. Daily Membership Authorization forms can be found online or at any Greater Joliet Area YMCA branch. Daily visitors may be restricted at high volume times. How to Register for Programs • Online by visiting www.jolietymca.org • In person by visiting your local branch • By phone by calling (815) SAY-YMCA (current members) The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card. All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled. Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled. All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee. Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/ damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in a new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines. Child Supervision Children under the age of eight must be supervised by an adult at all times when using YMCA facilities. Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult when using the pool. The Supervised Playroom is available during designated hours for Full Members, ages six months to seven years old.
Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants. No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA prohibits smoking in any YMCA facility or on the grounds of any Y property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks and paths. Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. You can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org. Schedules are available under Locations and your desired branch. Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex in the locker room. Racquetball Courts Racquets and racquetballs are available at the front desk. Please call ahead for court and equipment availability. Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change. Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times. Family Gym: We set aside time for families to enjoy activities together in our gym. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult during these times. Full Court: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball. Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15) who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utilize the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights.

YMCA Youth Basketball Leagues
When kids play sports they do more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups. YMCA Youth Sports Leagues maximize the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!
Three convenient league locations to choose from: Galowich Family YMCA League All practices will be held at the Galowich Family YMCA. Games may be played at either Galowich or a Troy elementary school.

7th-8th Grade Division: Games are planned to be played on Tuesdays evenings at a Plainfield School and Saturday mornings at the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs’ and at our Troy location. Our 7th-8th grade division will play against our Joliet YMCAs’ teams throughout the season. Both the 5th-6th and 7th-8th grade divisions will play in a tournament at the end of the season against the Joliet YMCA’s teams. Game times/days are subject to change due to gym availability at the Plainfield schools.

JOLIET Y JETS SWIM TEAM
FALL SWIM CLINIC SEPTEMBER 8-11, 2015 Greater Joliet Area YMCA One of the area’s most HISTORIC youth swimming clubs, the Joliet Y JETS Swim Team is a year-round competitive swimming program that offers instruction and training for swimmers, ages six and up. This is your opportunity to spend a week with our coaches to learn new drills, improve your swimming skills and meet members of the JETS family.
Cost: $25
Swimmers do not need to be YMCA members to participate in the clinic. At the completion of the clinic, swimmers who wish to join the team will be given a group placement along with registration materials.

Join the Jets:
To make the beginning level of the team, swimmers must be able to swim one length (25 yards) of the pool on their stomach and their back without stopping while demonstrating certain swimming fundamentals, such as rotary breathing. Swimmers will be placed into groups by the coaching staff. Swimmers who are not quite ready for the team are encouraged to enroll in YMCA swim lessons or participate in the JETS’ pre-competitive Flight School program.
NO MANDATORY COMPETITION OR PRACTICE ATTENDANCE!
All JETS Swim Team participants must have a Full YMCA membership. Full Members enjoy use of the Y’s indoor pool, gym, fitness equipment and racquetball courts at both the Galowich and Smith YMCA locations. Members also enjoy discounted prices on other programs throughout the year. Our positive, professional coaching staff not only builds strong swimmers, but strong values as well. We develop all swimmers, ages six and older, from beginners to elite!

Designed for children attending morning and afternoon kindergarten, we will provide transportation from many area schools to the YMCA for a fun and unique program. Children will do activities that emphasize fine motor skills through arts and crafts, and gross motor skills through gym games. Upon entering first grade, students will transition into the Y’s before and after school recreation program, Kidz Zone. Your child will need to bring a healthy lunch and drink each day. K-KIDZ SCHOOL SITES
Pint-Size Pupils This kindergarten-prep program is designed for preschool children, ages 3-5. Weekly activities will help to develop your child’s socialization skills while introducing colors, shapes, letters, numbers and more through a child-centered approach. Activities will include arts and crafts, gym play and more. Children must be potty trained. Please send your child with a healthy snack each day. All programs will run Monday through Friday.

Before and After School Youth Recreation Program As part of its Kidz Zone program, the Galowich Family YMCA provides recreational before and after school activities for students at schools in the Plainfield, Joliet, Troy, Rockdale and Minooka school districts. Parents, need a break? No problem! Parents’ Night Out at the Galowich Family YMCA allows you to take some time for yourself while your children, ages 2-12, spend time having fun at the Y! Children will participate in a variety of activities, including games, sports, arts and crafts and movies, while you enjoy a relaxing evening. The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.
In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.
Determining Your Child’s Swim Level
To help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the description of the swim skill levels provided on the next two pages. Your child must be able to perform ALL of the skills in the previous level to be enrolled in the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates, therefore it is very common for children to repeat the same swim level. All children will be swim tested on the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled at the appropriate level.
Swim Lesson Instructors
Although we strive for consistency in our teaching staff, there are occasions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. This is a better alternative than to cancel the lesson. We encourage parents to discuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, however, to help classes start on time, please request an appointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit
1. Classes missed due to weather, acts of God, illness or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least one day prior to the lesson, there will be no make-ups or credits given. 3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.
YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures
1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. Please do not inquire about your child’s swim level at the front desk. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. Parents, please remember that we try to keep a clean and healthy environment for your children and our participants. We ask that street shoes and strollers are not allowed on the pool deck. 4. For your child’s safety, to avoid distractions and so participants may receive the very best swim instruction, we ask that you observe your child’s swim classes from our pool observation room. Parents’ Days are held the first and last day of each session. One parent per child may observe swim class on the pool deck on these days. Additional family members may observe from our observation room. Please dress for warm temperatures, and remember that street shoes are not permitted on the pool deck. 5. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
GENERAL POOL RULES Open Swim: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 16) will be swim tested. Children (under 10) must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who cannot pass the yellow or blue swim test, must also be accompanied by an adult in the water. Lap Swim: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, ages 11–14, are permitted in the lap lanes with a parent and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lane must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

Showering is required before entering the pool. Hair that is shoulder length or longer must be restrained with a hair tie or swim cap. No running under any circumstances. Bathing suits with a liner are required to enter the pool. Street clothes gym shorts or thong suits are prohibited. NO diving in the shallow end. NO flips, backward jumps/dives, spinning jumps, rough housing, pushing, or throwing of patrons allowed. Food, gum and glass containers are not permitted. Do not hang on or around the ladders, stairs or lane lines. All flotation devices must be U.S. Coast Guard Approved. Water wings, baby boats, inner tubes and other related inflatables will not be allowed YMCA life jackets are available for use upon request. Any water fitness equipment or water toys must be approved by the lifeguard on duty. Non-potty trained swimmers are required to wear a swim diaper under their swim suits. Strollers and child carriers are not allowed on the pool deck at any time. Persons with open sores, lesions, wounds and/or having any infectious communicable diseases may not enter the pool. The lifeguard is the authority figure in the pool area. Please follow directions when given..

Parent & Child Program (Ages 6 months-3 years old)
The primary objective of this program is to get both the parent and the child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to songs and games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Class activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child.
Pike with a Parent Program (Ages 2-5)
The skills taught in this class are similar to those taught in the Pike level. However, this class is geared towards the child that is physically ready for the Pike level, but is not ready to be unaccompanied by an adult in the pool. The class will focus on building self confidence, proper entry and exit from the pool, kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, and floating on their front and back through the use of games, songs and swim instruction.
Preschool Program (Ages 3-5)
This program offers children their first experience in the pool without parental assistance. Children should be able to be independent in the water, know how to take turns and be able to hold onto the side of the pool by themselves. All preschool swim levels include the following five components: personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, rescue, water sports and games. Children also will learn the proper usage of instructional flotation devices (IFDs) and personal flotation devices (PFDs). Pike - This beginning level is for the non-swimmer. Children will develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and develop independent movement in the water with the use of IFDs & PFDs. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle strokes, kicking skills, floating on their front and back and comfort with holding their face in the water while blowing bubbles. By the end of this level, children will learn to paddle 10 yards on their front, back and side with the use of an IFD, and five feet without assistance. Eel - This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills. It is designed for children who are comfortable putting their face in the water. They are taught to kick, float without the use of an IFD, and perform the progressive paddle strokes on their front, back and side. They also learn how to submerge in deeper water using a pole. By the end of this level, children can swim across the pool with the help of an IFD and 15 feet without assistance on their front, back and side. Ray & Starfish - At these intermediate levels, children build endurance by swimming on their front, back and side. They begin to learn about rhythmic breathing with the front paddle. They are introduced to the lead-up strokes for breaststroke and elementary backstroke, and also learn to tread water and perform progressive diving skills. By the end of this level, children can swim across the pool on their front, back and side without assistance.
Youth Program (Ages 6–14)
This program consists of five main components: personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, rescue, water sports and games. Each of the youth swim levels builds upon the preceding levels. There are seven levels covering all of the swimming strokes, diving fundamentals and water safety skills. Polliwog - At this beginning level, children become acquainted with the pool, the use of personal flotation devices (PFD) and the basic movements of swimming (kicking, paddling and floating on their front and back). By the end of this level, they should know the front, side and back paddle and be able to swim across the pool with the use of a PFD and at least 15 feet without a PFD. Guppy - In this level, swimmers continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a PFD. They are introduced to lead-up strokes for the sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke and begin paddling with their faces in the water. By the end of this level, children can swim 25 yards (or one length of the pool) on their front, back and side without assistance. Minnow - This is the initial intermediate level. Swimmers will focus on the front crawl with rhythmic breathing, back crawl with arm recovery out of the water, sidestroke with a scissors kick, and breaststroke and elementary backstroke using a proper whip kick. By the end of this level, they will be able to swim 25 yards using all of the above-mentioned strokes. Fish - At this point, students continue to work on their strokes with turns at the wall. At the end of this level, students should be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 25 yards of butterfly kick with the help of fins. Flying Fish & Shark - At this advanced level, students work on refining their stroke technique and increasing their endurance. By the end of this level, children will be able to swim 100 yards (or four lengths of the pool) without stopping using freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 25 yards of butterfly without the use of fins.

JETS Flight School Swim Club (Ages 5-12) JETS Flight School is an introductory, pre-competitive experience to the Joliet Y JETS Swim Team. An experienced swim coach will work with swimmers to develop proper technique in each of the competitive strokes. In addition, students will learn new skills, such as streamlines and racing dives. Swimmers must have the endurance to swim one length of the pool without a flotation device while demonstrating rotary breathing and the ability to float comfortably and confidently on their stomach and back. The Y can help you become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding! Students will learn professional responsibilities, first aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding. Attendance at EVERY class is mandatory! Certification cards (upon successful completion) are included in the fee. Prerequisites: • Must be able to swim a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water At the end of the course, participants will test for Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED certifications. Refunds will not be given for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants in order to run. Our adaptive swim lesson program is designed for children with special needs. Each session includes five 30-minute swim lessons, starting one week after group swim lessons. The goal of this program is to provide basic water instruction and water safety skills in a therapeutic manner with the needs of each individual participant in mind. Participants may be placed individually or with other participants. In order to ensure that each participant is placed in the proper setting, instructor approval is required in order to register. STAYING ACTIVE FOR LIFE COMING FALL 2015 Enhance®Fitness is a proven community-based senior fitness and arthritis management program. This program is designed to help your child transition into school. Designed for children attending morning and afternoon kindergarten, we will provide transportation from many area schools to the YMCA for a fun and unique program. Children will do activities that emphasize fine motor skills through arts and crafts and gross motor skills through gym games. They may then transition into our after school recreation program, Kidz Zone. Your child will need to bring a lunch and drink each day. Before and After School Youth Recreation Program The Smith Family YMCA’s Kidz Zone program serves kids, grades K-8, in Joliet area schools. Children do homework, arts and crafts, play games, develop friendships and learn lessons that will last a lifetime. Participation Schools:

On select full days out of school, registered participants may spend the day with friends and the Kidz Zone staff at the YMCA. Pre-registration is required. Please note: Refunds cannot be given to those who later are unable to attend. All participants should dress for the weather and bring a lunch, two healthy snacks, drinks, swimsuit and towel. Children may be signed in as early as 6 a.m. and signed out as late as 6 p.m.

$45 non-refundable registration fee. A $25 late fee will be added to the registration fee for those who register during the month of August. At the Y, no one is turned away due to the inability to pay. Financial assistance is available. CCR&R and DHS funds are also accepted. A $45 non-refundable registration fee*, first of 10 installment payments and YMCA membership fee is due at registration time. The remaining nine payments are paid via automatic withdrawal from a checking account or credit card. All participants must have a full or program membership with the YMCA. PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT
Parents, need a break? No problem! Parents’ Night Out at the Smith Family YMCA allows you to take some time for yourself while your children, ages 2-12, spend time having fun at the Y! Children will participate in a variety of activities, including games, sports, arts and crafts and movies, while you enjoy a relaxing evening. Pre-registration is required and all participants must be potty trained. Participants will go swimming and pizza will be served. Adaptive Swim Lessons (Ages 4-14) Our adaptive swim lesson program is designed for children with special needs. Each session includes five 30-minute swim lessons, starting one week after group swim lessons. The goal of this program is to provide basic water instruction and water safety skills in a therapeutic manner with the needs of each individual participant in mind. Participants may be placed individually or with other participants. In order to ensure that each participant is placed in the proper setting, instructor approval is required in order to register. One-on-one lessons with our expert instructors are now available at the Smith Family YMCA for individuals age four and up. Lessons are 30 minutes in length. Instructors can be requested, however, availability may vary. 5 Lessons 30 min. each $75/$150
Semi-Private Lessons (Ages 4 and Up) Two or more students of the same swimming ability may request semi-private lessons with our expert instructors. Intended for children ages 3 and up, one session includes five 30-minute lessons. Instructors may be requested, however availability may vary. Schedule must be arranged with the Aquatics Director. Private and semi-private swimming lessons begin one week after group swimming lessons. Two registrations for semi-private lessons must be made with two semi-private swim lesson participants. JETS Flight School Swim Club (Ages 5-12) JETS Flight School is an introductory, pre-competitive experience to the Joliet Y JETS Swim Team. An experienced swim coach will work with swimmers to develop proper technique in each of the competitive strokes. In addition, students will learn new skills, such as streamlines and racing dives. Swimmers must have the endurance to swim one length of the pool without a flotation device while demonstrating rotary breathing and the ability to float comfortably and confidently on their stomach and back. American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Ages 15 and Up) The Y can help you become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding! Students will learn professional responsibilities, first aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding. Attendance at EVERY class is mandatory! Certification cards (upon successful completion) are included in the fee. Prerequisites: • Must be able to swim a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water At the end of the course, participants will test for Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED certifications. Refunds will not be given for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants in order to run. In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.
Determining Your Child’s Swim Level
To help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the description of the swim skill levels provided on the next two pages. Your child must be able to perform ALL of the skills in the previous level to be enrolled in the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates, therefore it is very common for children to repeat the same swim level. All children will be swim tested on the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled at the appropriate level.
Swim Lesson Instructors
Although we strive for consistency in our teaching staff, there are occasions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. This is a better alternative than to cancel the lesson. We encourage parents to discuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, however, to help classes start on time, please request an appointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit
1. Classes missed due to weather, acts of God, illness or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least one day prior to the lesson, there will be no make-ups or credits given. 3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.
YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures
1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. Please do not inquire about your child’s swim level at the front desk. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. Parents, please remember that we try to keep a clean and healthy environment for your children and our participants. We ask that street shoes and strollers are not allowed on the pool deck. 4. For your child’s safety, to avoid distractions and so participants may receive the very best swim instruction, we ask that you observe your child’s swim classes from our pool observation room. Parents’ Days are held the first and last day of each session. One parent per child may observe swim class on the pool deck on these days. Additional family members may observe from our observation room. Please dress for warm temperatures, and remember that street shoes are not permitted on the pool deck. 5. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
GENERAL POOL RULES Open Swim: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 16) will be swim tested. Children (under 10) must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who cannot pass the yellow or blue swim test, must also be accompanied by an adult in the water. Lap Swim: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, ages 11–14, are permitted in the lap lanes with a parent and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lane must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

Showering is required before entering the pool. Hair that is shoulder length or longer must be restrained with a hair tie or swim cap. No running under any circumstances. Bathing suits with a liner are required to enter the pool. Street clothes gym shorts or thong suits are prohibited. NO diving in the shallow end. NO flips, backward jumps/dives, spinning jumps, rough housing, pushing, or throwing of patrons allowed. Food, gum and glass containers are not permitted. Do not hang on or around the ladders, stairs or lane lines. All flotation devices must be U.S. Coast Guard Approved. Water wings, baby boats, inner tubes and other related inflatables will not be allowed YMCA life jackets are available for use upon request. Any water fitness equipment or water toys must be approved by the lifeguard on duty. Non-potty trained swimmers are required to wear a swim diaper under their swim suits. Strollers and child carriers are not allowed on the pool deck at any time. Persons with open sores, lesions, wounds and/or having any infectious communicable diseases may not enter the pool. Parent & Child Program (Ages 6 months-3 years old)
The primary objective of this program is to get both the parent and the child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to songs and games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Class activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child.
Pike with a Parent Program (Ages 2-5)
The skills taught in this class are similar to those taught in the Pike level. However, this class is geared towards the child that is physically ready for the Pike level, but is not ready to be unaccompanied by an adult in the pool. The class will focus on building self confidence, proper entry and exit from the pool, kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, and floating on their front and back through the use of games, songs and swim instruction.
Preschool Program (Ages 3-5)
This program offers children their first experience in the pool without parental assistance. Children should be able to be independent in the water, know how to take turns and be able to hold onto the side of the pool by themselves. All preschool swim levels include the following five components: personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, rescue, water sports and games. Children also will learn the proper usage of instructional flotation devices (IFDs) and personal flotation devices (PFDs). Pike - This beginning level is for the non-swimmer. Children will develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and develop independent movement in the water with the use of IFDs & PFDs. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle strokes, kicking skills, floating on their front and back and comfort with holding their face in the water while blowing bubbles. By the end of this level, children will learn to paddle 10 yards on their front, back and side with the use of an IFD, and five feet without assistance. Eel - This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills. It is designed for children who are comfortable putting their face in the water. They are taught to kick, float without the use of an IFD, and perform the progressive paddle strokes on their front, back and side. They also learn how to submerge in deeper water using a pole. By the end of this level, children can swim across the pool with the help of an IFD and 15 feet without assistance on their front, back and side. Ray & Starfish - At these intermediate levels, children build endurance by swimming on their front, back and side. They begin to learn about rhythmic breathing with the front paddle. They are introduced to the lead-up strokes for breaststroke and elementary backstroke, and also learn to tread water and perform progressive diving skills. By the end of this level, children can swim across the pool on their front, back and side without assistance.
Youth Program (Ages 6–14)
This program consists of five main components: personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, rescue, water sports and games. Each of the youth swim levels builds upon the preceding levels. There are seven levels covering all of the swimming strokes, diving fundamentals and water safety skills. Polliwog - At this beginning level, children become acquainted with the pool, the use of personal flotation devices (PFD) and the basic movements of swimming (kicking, paddling and floating on their front and back). By the end of this level, they should know the front, side and back paddle and be able to swim across the pool with the use of a PFD and at least 15 feet without a PFD. Guppy - In this level, swimmers continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a PFD. They are introduced to lead-up strokes for the sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke and begin paddling with their faces in the water. By the end of this level, children can swim 25 yards (or one length of the pool) on their front, back and side without assistance. Minnow - This is the initial intermediate level. Swimmers will focus on the front crawl with rhythmic breathing, back crawl with arm recovery out of the water, sidestroke with a scissors kick, and breaststroke and elementary backstroke using a proper whip kick. By the end of this level, they will be able to swim 25 yards using all of the above-mentioned strokes. Fish - At this point, students continue to work on their strokes with turns at the wall. At the end of this level, students should be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 25 yards of butterfly kick with the help of fins. Flying Fish & Shark - At this advanced level, students work on refining their stroke technique and increasing their endurance. By the end of this level, children will be able to swim 100 yards (or four lengths of the pool) without stopping using freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 25 yards of butterfly without the use of fins.

This impact-free workout is excellent for men and women of all ages who want a challenging cardiovascular workout that includes muscular strength training and toning. The Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program (AFYAP) is a water exercise program designed to provide low-impact exercises for persons with various types of arthritis. Many people with other mobility problems also find this program helpful. Certified instructors guide participants through gentle activities designed to alleviate the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and increase range of motion. Improving the nation’s health and well-being. Boot Camp Developed with you—the member—in mind, this boot camp class will help you take your fitness goals to the next level! We will help you push yourself to become a greater you with better wellness and a healthy mindset.
STAYING ACTIVE FOR LIFE COMING FALL 2015 Enhance®Fitness is a proven community-based senior fitness and arthritis management program. Classes are designed to help older adults become more active, energized, and empowered for independent living. Beginning this fall, this exciting new program will be offered at the Smith Family YMCA. Our certified instructors with specialized training will lead class participants through low impact exercises that focus on enhancing cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. Designed for older adults at all fitness levels, this program has proven to be especially beneficial for those living with arthritis. Classes will meet three days a week and will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere that encourages social interaction and fellowship. Registration required.

Adult Sports Leagues Co-ed Volleyball League BUMP! SET! SPIKE! Sign up now for our first-ever co-ed Volleyball league. Get all your friends and family together to participate in this fun-filled healthy competition. This league will include regular season play along with playoffs and a championship game to determine the top team. Games played on Monday evenings. BALANCING ACT Meet Terry, Isaac and Justin
As a single mother with a demanding job, Terry Molina was struggling to find a balance. Her biggest priority was finding a before and after school program that would not only provide proper care for her sons, Isaac and Justin, but also accommodate her busy schedule. “I was going through a divorce,” Terry said. “It was just me and the boys. I thought, ‘How am I going to do this?’” Little did she know, that just a few miles away from her home, the Y provided before and after school care for hundreds of students through its Kidz Zone program. After visiting the Y, Terry was able to secure a scholarship that allowed Isaac and Justin to attend YMCA programs such as Kidz Zone and Summer Day Camp at the Galowich Family YMCA. With the help of the Y, Terry says, Isaac has evolved into a skilled swimmer and Justin has improved his social skills dramatically. “Since the minute I walked into the Y, the staff has been great,” Terry said. “My mind is at ease. I don’t have to worry when I go to work. I appreciate it more than I can explain.” As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to those in need of financial assistance. IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Y is looking for volunteers to help plan its ninth annual Giving Gala, which is slated for Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. Proceeds from this annual event benefit the Y’s scholarship fund, helping to ensure that no one is turned away from the Y due to the inability to pay. Community volunteers are needed to help plan all aspects of the Giving Gala. Volunteers assist with logistics, sponsorship, marketing, decorations and live and silent auction item solicitation.
