EXPLORE THE Y Why the Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall counties. Your Y Membership Offers All This and More! Everyone belongs at the YMCA! We’re more than just a place to work out; more than a place where families can spend quality time together; more than a place to learn to swim; more than a place for kids to play team sports; and more than a place for seniors to stay young at heart. We’re all those things and more. We’re a place where you belong! Y Member Benefits: • Galowich-Smith Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs and the Morris Community Y. They may also use the C.W. Avery Family Y twelve times during a calendar year. • C.W. Avery Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Avery, Galowich, Smith and Morris branches. • Morris Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Morris Community YMCA and twelve visits to the Galowich, Smith and C.W. Avery Family YMCAs during a calendar year. • Priority registration on all programs. • Lower member rates on programs. • Five guest passes per calendar year. • Full Members enjoy free fitness orientations and a variety of adult fitness classes. • Free child watch services with a family membership. • No contracts to sign. • When you join the YMCA, not only do you get a good value, you get good values. That’s because everything we do is centered around the Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Member Code of Conduct In support of our Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, all members are expected to behave appropriately while using YMCA facilities and abide by the Member Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy. Those who choose to act inappropriately, as defined by YMCA staff, may be asked to leave the building. Repeat offenses may lead to a membership suspension or revocation of all privileges. AWAY Program - Always Welcome at the YMCA When you travel outside of the greater Joliet area, you can use your Y membership at more than 2,000 locations across the country. Some guest fees and limitations may apply. Please contact the Y you are visiting for details. Members from other YMCAs across the country may enjoy the amenities at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA branches up to twelve times per calendar year. Please contact the Membership Desk for hours, availability and additional information. Bring a Friend to the Y Current members may bring guests to the Y to share the YMCA experience. When a friend joins the Y, members receive one FREE month of membership. New members must maintain an active paid status for a minimum of two months. Plus, your friend will receive a gift for joining! See the Membership Desk for guest and referral details. Transferring Your Y Membership Members of other YMCAs looking to join the Galowich or Smith Family YMCAs should cancel their existing memberships and speak to a representative of our Membership Services Team. We will be happy to waive the joiner’s fee for those transferring their membership from another Y within 90 days of the expiration date. 4 l 2016 Galowich and Smith Summer Program Guide

The YMCA is America’s Most Trusted Swim Instructor.
In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.
YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures
1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit
1. Classes missed due to weather, acts of God, illness or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least one day prior to the lesson, there will be no make-ups or credits given. 3. The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.
3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.

DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS A Teen Achievers Story
Crystal Toran recently graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology of Crime and Justice. She now works for the Juvenile Intervention and Support Center in Chicago, where she mentors troubled teens and teaches them the importance of finishing school, giving back to the community and obtaining a steady job. In this role, Crystal gets to utilize the leadership skills she first learned back in high school when she was still a student in need of some guidance of her own. “I was a lost child with big dreams,” Crystal said. “The Y’s Teen Achievers program helped me pave a steady way towards a bright future.” Teen Achievers is a leadership program designed to help students on their path to graduating high school, attending college and beyond. Led by Maurice Fears, Executive Director of the Smith Family YMCA, the program meets on a weekly basis throughout the school year and concludes in the spring with an annual out-of-state college tour. Crystal credits the program with helping her overcome some very difficult periods of her adolescent life, including the tragic passing of her father. “Through that difficult time, the Achievers program gave me the determination that I needed to stay focused and keep my dreams in sight,” she said. “With everything being stressful at home, and my mother being left to raise three teenagers on her own, Mr. Fears made sure that I would not lose sight of what I was supposed to be doing—going to college.” Crystal graduated from Joliet Central High School in the top 25 of her class prior to enrolling at Loyola. During the Raise the Paddle portion of the 2016 YMCA Giving Gala, Crystal spoke eloquently about her time with the Teen Achievers. Gala attendees responded to Crystal’s passionate speech by donating nearly 18,000, which will be used to expand the Teen Achievers program. “I was always taught that the greatest way to share your success is to become a part of someone else’s,” she said during the event. “That’s why I was so honored when Mr. Fears asked me to share my story with you here tonight. I know firsthand how impactful this program was for me and what it can do for teens in our community.” For more information on how you can make a tax-deductible donation to benefit YMCA programs like Teen Achievers, please contact: GALOWICH FAMILY YMCA Kate Nichols Community Engagement Director Phone: (815) 744-3939, ext. 308 Email: knichols@jolietymca.org

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.
