YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1 The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes. 3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS
SWIM STARTERS
SWIM BASICS
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
A / WATER DISCOVERY
B / WATER EXPLORATION
Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.
In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, oating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
1 / WATER ACCLIMATION
2 / WATER MOVEMENT
3 / WATER STAMINA
Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.
In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.
4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION
5 / STROKE DEVELOPMENT
6 / STROKE MECHANICS
Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butter y kick Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.
Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.
In stage 6, students refine stroke techni ue on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.
Swim, oat, swim sequencing front glide, roll, back oat, roll, front glide, and exit • Jump, push, turn, grab
SWIM STROKES
Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events • Help facilitate our Kid’s Triathalon. Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity. To begin volunteering at the Y, please contact: C.W. SUPPORT THE YMCA’S ANNUAL CAMPAIGN
The YMCA has been called the “alphabet soup” of social service because we address a variety of needs through our innovative and values-driven programming. In an ever-changing world, we answer each community’s call for help with open arms, working alongside community partners like our schools, healthcare providers and other agencies to help our neighbors thrive. Last year, the four-branches within the Greater Joliet Area YMCA answered 8,000 calls for help in the form of $1.1 million in scholarship assistance to make our facilities, programs and services accessible for all. Each year, that need grows. And yet our arms open wider. At the YMCA, no one is turned away for the inability to pay. We maintain this commitment thanks to gifts from donors like you. Your tax-deductible gift to our YMCA helps teach children to swim, gives seniors a place to connect with others and build strength, provides families with a place to grow together, and allows children to experience stability and the joy of learning in our care.

LEARN, GROW, THRIVE EXPLORE THE Y
Through our four YMCA branches and our Central City “Y without Walls,” we are serving thousands of residents each and every day. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. But, most importantly, our doors are open to everyone, regardless of age, income or background. At the Y, no one is ever turned away due to the inability to pay.
