ON THE COVER C.W. Avery Family YMCA members Tasha Kitson and Eric Marsaglia were the lucky winners of the ‘We Love the YMCA’ live auction item at the Giving Gala in February. Tasha, Eric and their kids, Graysen (5), Caelynn (5), Brock (6) and Rome (9), love spending time together at the YMCA. All four kids are active in the Y’s youth sports programs, while Tasha and Eric enjoy using the Fitness Center. Eric has also volunteered his time over the years to coach many of the kids’ flag football, soccer and t-ball teams. Thank you, Tasha and Eric, for being loyal members and true champions of the YMCA in the Plainfield community.

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM

Youth Basketball League

When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups. The Y Youth Sports program maximizes the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

Divisions: Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten): Games are played on Saturdays at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. Grades 1-2: Games are planned to be played on Friday evenings at a Plainfield school. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this year-long program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week. Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate. Discounts are available for Y members, to those with a doctor’s referrals and to those who pay in full. These discounts can also be combined. Financial assistance is also available. To find out if your insurance provider covers this program, contact the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance call center @ 800-237-4942. Mon. Wed. Thu.

FUN NEVER RETIRES

Embracing a healthy lifestyle through fun, laughter and friends Enhance®Fitness—a free exercise program for seniors—entered Jane Ferguson’s life at the perfect time. Prior to enrolling in the class, Jane battled issues related to arthritis. But thanks to Enhance®Fitness, those problems are no longer a concern! In fact, at age 74, Jane’s health is flourishing! You can read Jane’s story in her own words below: When I received an email from the Y announcing a new program for seniors called Enhance®Fitness, I was intrigued. The description said it would incorporate aerobics, strength training, balance and flexibility exercises. It seemed as though they had developed a program that fit my needs perfectly. Before starting the class, I had been experiencing some balance issues that had resulted in me falling several times. The arthritis that had settled in my knees and ankles was making it increasingly difficult to get around. I looked forward to making a change in my routine and developing some strength in my legs to help keep me a little more stable. The certified instructors for the classes are wonderful. They choose upbeat music, have smiles on their faces and encourage us as we progress. They are interested in each person in the class and strive to make relationships with everyone. They often offer additional tips that we can use outside of class. They even provide tours of the weight room and guidance as to which machines will help us continue building on our progress. Even though we are working, we are all having a lot of fun, too! We support each other and laugh a lot. As the weeks passed, I noticed several changes. I had more energy, my balance was improving and I was becoming more flexible with increased range of motion. My arms and legs were getting stronger and everyday tasks were becoming easier. I feel truly blessed to have a place like the YMCA to go to have fun and stay active while being supported by a staff that cares, encourages us and motivates us to keep working hard and try new things! IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA

The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity. To begin volunteering at the Y, please contact: Dori Fugate, Community Engagement Director dfugate@jolietymca.org (815) 267-8600, ext. 210
