Healthy Kids Day Saturday, April 30 9 a.m.-Noon
Healthy Kids Day is a YMCA initiative that’s designed to raise awareness about the importance of establishing healthy habits in kids at a young age. The goal is to encourage more kids to stay moving and learning, so they can stay active all summer long—which is critical during out-of-school time. Healthy Kids Day is a free event that is open to the entire community. Festivities include a health and wellness expo featuring local vendors, kids games, exciting prizes, giveaways and YMCA membership specials. 2016 C.W. Avery Winter/Spring Program Guide l 1
EXPLORE THE Y Why the Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties. Your Y Membership Offers All This and More! Everyone belongs at the YMCA! We’re more than just a place to work out; more than a place where families can spend quality time together; more than a place to learn to swim; more than a place for kids to play team sports; and more than a place for seniors to stay young at heart. We’re all those things and more. We’re a place where you belong! Y Member Benefits: • Galowich-Smith Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs and the Morris Community Y. They may also use the C.W. Avery Family Y twelve times during a calendar year. • C.W. Avery Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Avery, Galowich, Smith and Morris branches. • Morris Y Full Members enjoy unlimited use of the Morris Community YMCA and twelve visits to the Galowich, Smith and C.W. Avery Family YMCAs during a calendar year. • Priority registration on all programs. • Lower member rates on programs. • Five guest passes per calendar year. • Full Members enjoy free fitness orientations. • Free child watch services with a family membership. • No contracts to sign. • When you join the YMCA, not only do you get a good value, you get good values. That’s because everything we do is centered around the Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Member Code of Conduct In support of our Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, all members are expected to behave appropriately while using YMCA facilities and abide by the Member Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy. Those who choose to act inappropriately, as defined by YMCA staff, may be asked to leave the building. Repeat offenses may lead to a membership suspension or revocation of all privileges. AWAY Program - Always Welcome at the YMCA When you travel outside of the greater Joliet area, you can use your Y membership at more than 2,000 locations across the country. Some guest fees and limitations may apply. Please contact the Y you are visiting for details. Members from other YMCAs across the country may enjoy the amenities at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA branches up to twelve times per calendar year. Please contact the Membership Desk for hours, availability and additional information. Bring a Friend to the Y Current members may bring guests to the Y to share the YMCA experience. When a friend joins the Y, members receive one FREE month of membership. New members must maintain an active paid status for a minimum of two months. Plus, your friend will receive a gift for joining! See the Membership Desk for guest and referral details. Transferring Your Y Membership Members of other YMCAs looking to join the C.W. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Meet Erin and Willis
Seven-year-old Willis Terry is a true Y Kid. The Y is where he was first introduced to sports such as soccer and basketball. It’s where he and his Grandpa have made memories swimming in the pool. It’s the place that provides him with before and after school care each day. “Based on the experiences that we’ve had at the YMCA, I would suggest it to anybody,” said Erin Davis, Willis’ mother. “For me, the biggest benefit has been the sense of security. The Y has the best child care that’s been offered to me. It works around your schedule and around your income. They understand that life happens.” With the assistance of the Y’s scholarship program, Erin is able to send Willis to Kidz Zone at Walker’s Grove Elementary School. A single parent, Erin works full-time as a restaurant manager, while also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management and human resources. Because of the Y’s Kidz Zone programs, Erin can go to work each day knowing that Willis is in good hands. When she attends classes at night, she can rest assured that Willis has completed his schoolwork. Erin credits the Y as a big part of Willis’ growth over the years. When he first came to the Y, Willis was typically pretty shy. Now, Erin says, Willis’ confidence and social skills are greatly improved. “Compared to other care places, the YMCA has values to make sure that you see your child grow,” Erin said. “I don’t see the Y being out of our lives anytime soon. We’re going to be here a while.” As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds each year to those in need of financial assistance. To learn more about our People Helping People Scholarship Program, please contact your local branch.

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity. To begin volunteering at the Y, please contact: Dori Fugate – Community Engagement Director dfugate@jolietymca.org Ext. 210

LEARN, GROW, THRIVE EXPLORE THE Y Through our four YMCA branches and our Central City “Y without Walls,” we are serving thousands of residents each and every day. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. But, most importantly, our doors are open to everyone, regardless of age, income or background. At the Y, no one is ever turned away due to the inability to pay.
