EXPLORE THE Y Why the Y

General Information

The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties. Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit. Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled. All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee. Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in a new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines. ACTIVE, STRONG HAPPY, HEALTHY KIDS Healthy Kids Day

Healthy Kids Day is a YMCA initiative that’s designed to raise awareness about the importance of establishing healthy habits in kids at a young age. The goal is to encourage more kids to stay moving and learning, so they can stay active all summer long—which is critical during out-of-school time. Healthy Kids Day is a free event that is open to the entire community. Festivities include a health and wellness expo from local vendors, kids games, exciting prizes, giveaways and YMCA membership deals.

Upcoming Swim Clinics Our swim clinics are geared towards swimmers, ages 5-18, who are interested in being evaluated for a swim team placement. To participate in a clinic, swimmers should be able to swim 25 yards with comfort and confidence. Joliet Galowich Family YMCA March 13-15 7-8 p.m.

Smith Family YMCA March 20-23 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Morris Morris Community High School March 20-23 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Cost & Registration Cost of the clinic is $25. Clinic registration is handled through the Membership Desk at any YMCA branch or online at www.jolietymca.org. Swimmers do not need to be members of the YMCA in order to participate in the swim clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the clinic? The coaches work on basic technique drills and provide instruction throughout the week as they evaluate where each swimmer will be placed if they decide to join. By the end of the week, group placements and registration materials will be provided. Coaches and experienced swim team parents will be on hand throughout the week to chat and answer questions. Swimmers who we feel are not yet ready to join the team will be offered alternative options, such as YMCA swim lessons or other pre-competitive programs. What should I bring? Your child should bring a swimsuit (a one-piece suit for girls is required if they join the team), towel, and goggles. Girls and boys with long hair should wear a swim cap. Do I have to be a YMCA member? Swimmers do not need a YMCA membership to participate in the swim clinic. However, swimmers must be Facility Members of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA in order to register for the JETS swim team. You can find complete information about the YMCA, its mission, facilities, programs and schedules at www.jolietymca.org. Do I have to attend every practice? You do not have to come every day. Likewise, if you join the team, there is no attendance requirement except for our advanced high school levels, and swim meet participation is optional. Is financial assistance available? At the YMCA, no one is turned away due to the inability to pay. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Families who submit an application may qualify for a discount up to 75 percent off both membership fees and JETS program fees, depending on income. For more information and to download a scholarship application, visit www.jolietymca.org. I cannot attend the clinic, can I still tryout? If you are unable to attend the clinic, please contact Coach Dave Hedden at (815) 744-3939 ext. 412 or dhedden@jolietymca.org and arrange a separate time to be evaluated.

The YMCA is America’s Most Trusted Swim Instructor.

In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures

1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit

With the guidance of our trained Aquatics staff, you can learn to swim or improve your swimming endurance. The health benefits of swimming are many. Swimming strengthens the entire body from core to arms and legs. It improves the cardio-vascular system as it reduces blood pressure while strengthening your heart. It is also lowimpact and typically good for women during pregnancy, injured athletes looking to maintain a workout, the elderly and anyone overweight.

This fun, high-energy class promotes flexibility, improved circulation, muscle toning and cardiovascular conditioning.

At least three participants must be enrolled to run the class. If only one person is enrolled, you will be contacted about upgrading to a private swim lesson for an additional fee, transferring to a different day/time or cancelling the class and receiving a credit.

The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.

1. Classes missed due to weather, acts of God, illness or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least one day prior to the lesson, there will be no make-ups or credits given. 3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING Teen/Adult Swimming Lessons (Ages 15 and Up)

Many people think of swimming as a fun thing to do at a water park or during summer at the lake. However, it’s more than that. Swimming is not only an essential lifesaving skill to learn, but also an incredibly healthy activity. At least three participants must be enrolled to run the class. If only one person is enrolled, you will be contacted about upgrading to a private swim lesson for an additional fee, transferring to a different day/time or cancelling the class and receiving a credit. 1/9-1/30 1/14-2/11 2/13-3/13 2/18-3/18 3/20-4/30 3/25-4/30 5/1-6/4 5/6-6/3

Support the YMCA’s Annual Campaign

For more than 85 years, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA has been serving people from throughout Will, Grundy and parts of Kendall Counties, regardless of their age, income or background. The Y is committed to making programs, services and memberships possible for all. We served over 7,800 individuals with $1.1 million in scholarship assistance last year. While revenue from membership dues helps support and operate our facilities, the generosity of the business community, foundations, members, and friends ensures the Y remains affordable and accessible to all. At the Y, lives are changed every day. Gifts help give kids, teens, and adults – of all ages and backgrounds – a better chance to reach their full potential. Consider a tax-deductible contribution to the Annual Campaign to support scholarship funds that allow members of our community to take part in life-changing YMCA programs and services. Gifts of $1,000 or more are recognized with a banner in the branch of your choosing.

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA

The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity. To begin volunteering at the Y, please fill out an application at your local branch.
