ON THE COVER C.W. Avery Family YMCA members Tasha Kitson and Eric Marsaglia were the lucky winners of the ‘We Love the YMCA’ live auction item at the Giving Gala in February. Tasha, Eric and their kids, Graysen (5), Caelynn (5), Brock (6) and Rome (9), love spending time together at the YMCA. All four kids are active in the Y’s youth sports programs, while Tasha and Eric enjoy using the Fitness Center. Eric has also volunteered his time over the years to coach many of the kids’ flag football, soccer and t-ball teams. Thank you, Tasha and Eric, for being loyal members and true champions of the YMCA in the Plainfield community.

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM
YMCA Youth Basketball Leagues
When kids play sports they do more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups. YMCA Youth Sports Leagues maximize the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

The YMCA is America’s Most Trusted Swim Instructor.
In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.
YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures
1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor. 2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered. Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit

The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.
1. Classes missed due to weather, acts of God, illness or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least one day prior to the lesson, there will be no make-ups or credits given. 3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. All credits are valid for one year. 4. All program fees are non-refundable.

EMPOWERING OUR YOUTH Last spring, the Smith Family YMCA partnered with the Kiwanis Club of Joliet to pilot two new after school programs for youth: The Bring Up Grades program and the Terrific Kids program. These programs are designed to provide mentorship for youth and empower them to reach their full potential, both academically and personally. Each program, however, has its own unique goal in mind. Bring Up Grades, or BUG, is a program that encourages students to strive for academic success, and in turn, improve their grades and self-esteem. The goal for students is to raise one grade by the end of their current grading period. Terrific Kids, on the other hand, is a program that focuses on character development and good citizenship. Students learn about and practice demonstrating the “Terrific” character traits of being Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable. During weekly meetings, YMCA staff members and Kiwanis Club members worked with participants to set and accomplish their goals. Meetings were held each week and typically included group activities and fellowship. To celebrate each student’s hard work, a recognition ceremony was held at the end of the school year. Family members of participating students were invited to witness the program in action. Students were presented with a certificate for their completion of the programs and were rewarded with a pizza party. To learn more about BUG and Terrific Kids, please contact Youth and Family Director Melissa Parker at (815) 726-3939, ext. 418. IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.
