Biomes visited

by

an Individual By Sanjana Bhowmick

The record for visiting the maximum number of terrestrial biomes in the world was set by Nitin Gairola. He visited 15 terrestrial biomes from January 2007 to July 2017, including Tropical and subtropical Coniferous Forests in India, Mangroves in Malaysia, Ice and Tundra in Greenland, Montane Grasslands and Shrublands in Peru and Deserts and Xeric Shrublands in Morocco.

A

n adventure traveller, nature & wildlife photographer, a published writer and poet and a business management professional, that’s Nitin Gairola, an India Book of Records Holder. He travelled to many remote places on Earth, exploring all-natural biomes or ecological regions, continents and nearly a century of countries. It is his quest to document and better understand the planet and its inhabitants. Talking to IBR about his passion for travel, Nitin says, “My greatest passion was learning about the planet first hand through world travel. Over the years, I started focusing a lot more on the natural world than the human one during my travels. That greatly influenced my choice of destinations and I started visiting more and more remote places on the planet, such as the polar ice cap in Greenland, the dense rain forests of Central Africa, or the barren deserts in the middle of the Australian Outback or the great Sahara.”

6

India Book of Records | July 2021

“My greatest passion was learning about the planet first hand through world travel. Over the years, I started focusing a lot more on the natural world than the human one during my travels.

The 15 biomes he visited have been named and recognised by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) as The Polar Ice biome, Tundra, Montane Grasslands, Boreal Forests, Temperate Coniferous & Broadleaf Forests, Temperate Grasslands, Mediterranean

Nitin believes that throughout history, we have always had world maps classified by Man-Made political borders (from Kingdoms in the ancient age to Empires in the middleages and Nation-States today). But now, mankind witness maps classified, by natural boundaries as popularized by WWF, National Geographic and David Attenborough.

Following passion comes with a fair number of challenges as well. “One was the financial challenge of funding trips and transport to places where most people refrain from exploring. The cost of wildlife activities is also generally a lot more than routine city-based travel, as it is a lot more of a tailored experience for you, besides there is a cost for safeguarding the traveller. Moreover, some places also have their own fair share of risks despite being accompanied by guides; such as the trek into the rain forests of Central Africa or savannah of

South & East Africa and many road trips into absolute desert wildernesses such as in the Atacama, Bolivia, Australian Outback, Arctic Ice Cap and more,” shares Nitin about the challenges he faced. Reminiscing about his travel, Nitin shares an interesting incident from his travel diary. “This incident occurred while tenting in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, East Africa. It was around 5 am and completely dark when I heard lions roaring very close to our tent. Our tent was a basic small non-luxury one, placed at ground level.

While I was woken up by the roars, I gently placed my hand on my wife’s mouth to ensure she wouldn’t accidentally scream. Just when I thought the situation was under control, her mobile phone alarm went off for the morning safari. I fumbled with the phone in the cramped-up tent and finally, after 5 seconds, was able to switch off the alarm. After that, we just stayed still (almost like playing dead) till sunrise and when we couldn’t hear the lions anymore, we stepped out of our tent,” narrates Nitin about their narrow escape.

For his next record, he would want to be the first Indian to visit all the major deserts of the world i.e. the 17 largest deserts on the planet, which are more than 200,000 square miles each in area. The list also includes the icy ‘frozen’ deserts such as Antarctica and the Arctic ice sheet beside the hot ones (classic sand or rock deserts) and the cold deserts (such as the Gobi in Central Asia or the ones in the Western United States).

He along with a team of 70 members including, 15 mountaineering instructors, 5 support staff, and 45 trainees from the Basic Mountaineering Course unfurled the biggest National Flag. Talking about the inspiration behind the record, Capt. Jai Kishan says, “The expedition had multiple aims and objectives like, to commemorate 75 years of Independence ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Utsav’ and pay tribute to the Corona warriors. Amidst all the negativity amongst people due to Covid-19, we thought to spread some positivity, show a ray of hope. A hope, that the way we won our fight for freedom; we Indians shall win the war against Covid-19.” The trek started from Yuksom, leading to Tshoka, 9000 feet above sea level, then to Dzongri, 14000 feet above sea level. Finally, on the 4th day, they arrived at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute base Camp Chaurikhang, 14600 feet above sea level. The trek to HMI base camp was a challenging one

while carrying a backpack, negotiating uphill slopes in snowy conditions, slippery rocky trails, and sub-zero temperature. The team trekked for 7 to 9 hours daily, covering 15 km in a single day. While en route, they were accompanied by the scenic view of Rhododendron blooms and yaks grazing all around. Further elaborating on the difficulties faced, Captain says, “The making of the flag took place in the HMI workshop and consisted of three panels, 50 x50 metres each. The real challenge was to carry the flag panels at 16500 feet above sea level, along with the setting of anchors and rope, maintaining all flag protocols, sub-zero temperature and extreme snowfall and blizzards. It took us almost six months of planning, preparation, and making fellow team members understand the concept.” Hoisting the National Flag and singing the National anthem at such a high altitude was a very emotional sight for Captain, and by the end of the National Anthem, he couldn’t hold back his tears, reminiscence Capt. Jai Kishan.

o-Founder and CEO of Estro Tech Robotics and Innovations Pvt. Ltd., Christo Kollannur along with his team, developed India’s first innovative UV sterilizing robot called ‘Viruzid UV Rover’. The project started in November 2019 as a part of their college final year project. They completed the prototype at the beginning of 2020 and then filed for the patent application. Viruzid UV Rover is a UVC Disinfection mobile robot, which is an innovative next-generation mobile UV robot. It is designed to efficiently decontaminate spaces and closed areas while allowing the operator to operate with a remote from a distance with live camera feedback for utmost safety. UV disinfection technologies are known to play a major role in a multiple barrier approach to reduce the transmission of viruses and pathogens. Viruzid UV Rover uses high-intensity UV lamps producing short wave ultraviolet light at 254 nm to impair and destroy the exposed surface of pathogens. It is a mobile robot used for air and surface disinfection. The device was developed as a supplement to standard cleaning in rooms where no personnel are present. After completion of a manual cleaning process, the system automatically delivers a dose of germicidal Ultraviolet-C (UVC) energy, which alters the DNA of aggressive pathogens, to kill them. It helps sterilize hospital rooms, production

houses, offices, and storage areas without personnel present and provides 360° treatment. Talking to IBR, Christo says, “I started my start-up along with my friend Christo Varghese last year. I am a young entrepreneur and seeking an opportunity in the field of technology to be a part of world-class, sustainable projects that are challenging, elevating, and contribute significantly to the betterment of mankind.” His other team members are Christo Varghese, Don Thomas, Adharsh Govind, Rahul Vincent, Alin Ros David, Varsha Vinodand Jackson Christopher. Talking about the inspiration behind the innovation, Christo says, “This idea started as a final year college project. From the beginning, we were looking for an interesting concept that can make a good social impact. In 2018, there was the Nipah Virus outbreak in Kerala, which resulted in several deaths. This incident inspired us to look for a solution and think about how technology can help if the outbreak repeats itself. We consulted our professors and a doctor from a nearby medical college and understood the need for sanitization. From there, our research began and we started to find technology-based solutions and finally came up with the idea of UV Sterilizing robots.” India Book of Records | July 2021

The path to innovation is never a joyride. There are bumps and challenges along the way. Their very first challenge was that they are all from a mechanical engineering background, but a robotic project isn’t complete without electronics, programming, and more. So, they took guidance from the experts and selflearned many theories, and began the project. Later on,

the expenses incurred for the project posed a challenge. But with the help of bootstrapping, they managed to overcome it. Then came the real obstacle that began in early 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic started. Labs were closed, industries stopped supplying raw materials, and they were unable to meet to work due to social distancing and the imposed lockdown. But

India Book of Records | July 2021

they never gave up and took special permissions from the required authorities and got back to work and completed their first model. Talking about the future of Viruzid UV Rover, Christo says, “All the trials and tests have been completed for this industrial grade UV sterilizing robot. Now we have launched this product in the market under the Brand name ‘Viruzid

UV Rover (UVSR2.0)’, and also, we are conducting Robotic Sanitization works as a service model.” Currently, Christo is working on pandemic-related projects such as oxygen concentrators and he is planning to donate them to the needy. Young entrepreneurs like Christo and his team would help lead India to a technologically enhanced country.

“I feel very proud and happy to receive this award. It is a valuable addition to my career. My family, friends, students are very happy,” says Arundhati.

“Theatre has no language barrier; it is a good example of National Integration. Theatre creates a psychological impact on your mind. It helps to promote social discourse, helps to open up a dialogue and brings people together in a platform. It also acts as

a mirror to articulate current social issues. Personally, it gives me energy and keeps me alive,” says Arundhati while talking about the importance and the need for theatre. Arundhati feels since theatre as a subject is not compulsory and no exams are conducted, the subject is not treated with dignity by kids. But, slowly the attitude towards the subject is fast changing. Her academy has students who are enthusiastic about theatre. Every year she teaches one batch comprising of 30 students in her academy. According to Arundhati, to popularise the art of theatre amongst the younger genera-

tion has been a long-drawn struggle. Today’s generation looks for quick success on the silver screen, but theatre is all about ‘Riyaz’ (practice) of speech, intonation, expressions, body language and vocabulary, feels Arundhati. Talking about her inspiration, she says, “I derive my inspiration from people who despite many struggles, strive to build a beautiful life on their own merits. These people see the positive side of every difficult situation they encounter and this is what motivates me. Stories inspired by real people is what theatre is all about.” For Arundhati directing kids is what she enjoys the most,

as kids are more enterprising, loving and full of positive energy. “I feel very proud and happy to receive this award. It is a valuable addition to my career. The Largest Mosaic Portrait of MS Dhoni By Sanjana Bhowmick

1.  Tell us something about yourself? I was passionate about art since I was a child, and I continue to cultivate that passion. By profession, I am an animator, but at heart, I am an artist. 2.  How many people participated in this artwork? A total of 30 members were working, all from different professional backgrounds. We divided the work into six groups, each team comprised of 5 people.

3.  What inspired you to make this record? I got inspiration from Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s life and achievements. 4.  What challenges did you face? Well, challenges are part and parcel of life. No matter how much you plan, one has to face them. I, too faced challenges, while executing the artwork. I had ordered the chess materials from Delhi, and it was supposed to arrive by road in 3 days, but the materials arrived 12 days later. So I had to order by air, which increased my cost. As the materials were in large quantity, it was simultaneously under production and we received it in 3 parts. To compensate for the time loss we worked both day and night shifts to complete the artwork in 14 days. 5.  For how long you planned this record? Six months of long planning.
