On August 2, Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd tells the story of the persecution and destruction of a pure-hearted sailor by a predatory master-at-arms. The opera is based on Herman Melville’s classic American tale, with a libretto by E.M. Forster. The coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova shines in the August 9 broadcast of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, a tour-de-force of bel canto opera. The August 16 presentation of Massenet’s Thaïs stars one of LA Opera’s favorite leading ladies, soprano Nino Machaidze as Thaïs, with Plácido Domingo as her would-be savior. The August 23 broadcast is Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele and the August 30 program is Puccini’s Tosca.

Fiesta!
Thursdays at 10pm
On August 14, Fiesta! presents music of Chilean composer Juan Orrego-Salas performed by the Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble conducted by Carmen Helena Téllez. The program’s title, “Baroque Influences,” refers to music written and performed in Latin America during the Colonial period Carmen Helena Téllez. (16th to early 19th centuries), which has become more popular in recent years. Even before those treasures were rediscovered, however, composers from the region showed interest in exploring the connections between Spanish (and European) music from the past and Latin American music. The Ensemble will perform “De los montes vengo” and “En un pastoral albergue” from OrregoSalas’ Romances Pastorales Op.10.

Bobby “Slick” Leonard: Heart of a Hoosier Thursday, August 14 at 8pm Bobby “Slick” Leonard is Indiana basketball. No one better embodies its toughness; no one better personifies its passion. And no one takes more pride in being a Hoosier. Now, Leonard’s extraordinary life story is the subject of a new documentary. Bobby ‘Slick’ Leonard: Heart of a Hoosier features an all-star cast that includes Larry Bird, Jerry West, Reggie Miller, Senator Richard Lugar, Tommy John and Elgin Baylor. Through captivating interviews and a rich collection of archival footage, the film captures in vivid detail the epic events and historic milestones that helped shape Leonard’s extraordinary career in basketball. Be on the court for Leonard’s national title-winning shot
for IU; travel on the blizzard-enshrouded plane as Leonard and Minneapolis Lakers crash-landed in an Iowa cornfield; sit in the booth for Leonard’s “Boom Baby” calls that have defined Pacers fervor for more than three decades; and go on the road and in the locker room with the best and wildest team in the ABA, the Indiana Pacers. A brief preview of the program can be viewed online at wfyi.org/slick. Bobby ‘Slick’ Leonard: Heart of a Hoosier is produced by Ted Green Films, in collaboration with WFYI Public Television. The film is presented by the Indiana Pacers, CNO Financial Group and The Samerian Foundation and The Herbert Simon Family Foundation. Contributing sponsors include: Donald Moffitt, Peter Obremskey, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, James Dye and Jeff Smulyan.
