A recent article in the public broadcasting trade publication Current offered some good news about public radio.

The article stated that the number of public radio stations in the U.S. dedicated to classical music is on the increase. From 2011 to 2012, the number of broadcast and streaming classical stations rose from 109 to 178. That’s the first time in years that the number of classical stations in the public radio network has increased so substantially.

These are good signs as public radio stations across the country mark the second annual Public Radio Music Month this April. WFIU is proud to take part in the observation, having served for decades as south-central Indiana’s primary outlet for classical and jazz radio programming.

As classical music and jazz continue to disappear from commercial radio stations, public radio becomes ever more important. Nearly 90 percent of all classical radio stations in the U.S. are public radio stations—and that number has almost tripled in the past two decades.

Furthermore, in hundreds of communities across the country— including the entire states of Vermont, Wyoming, Wisconsin and Minnesota—public radio is the only source of free broadcast classical music. Can you imagine what the airwaves would sound like in Indiana without public radio? A lot of talk, a lot of rock, a lot of country, and not much else.

Classical Music with George Walker, Just You and Me with David Brent Johnson and Joe Bourne, and Standards

by Starlight with the timeless Dick Bishop— staples in the WFIU musical programming line-up—are shows that listeners have valued for years. Programs such Dick Bishop, host of Standards by Starlight as Afropop Worldwide, The Folk Sampler, Celtic Connections, and Hearts of Space complement the diverse range of offerings on WFIU. Of course, to celebrate Public Radio Music Month is not to downplay WFIU’s talk programming. Each month we get comments from listeners who voice their appreciation for indepth and balanced news coverage, but also enjoy the possibility of “getting away” from the news and soothing the nerves with WFIU’s musical offerings.

Artist of the Month Featured Bassist and IU Jacobs School of Music Contemporary faculty member Jeremy Allen is WFIU’s Artist of the Month for April.

Jeremy Allen

Allen’s recording career includes appearances on releases by trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, pianist Luke Gillespie, violinist Sara Caswell, the Steve Allee Quintet, and Ritmos Unidos.

He has performed with jazz artists such as saxophonists David Liebman and Eric Alexander, trumpeters Randy Brecker and Tim Hagans, and pianist Fred Hersch, and has played at numerous national and international jazz festivals.

In addition to recording for the Artists House and Cadence Records labels, he has put out CDs on his own label, Watercourse Records.

As a Jacobs faculty member in the jazz studies department, Allen teaches private lessons to jazz bass majors, directs one of the school’s four jazz big bands, coaches a variety of jazz combos, and operates the program’s Rhythm Section Master Class along with colleagues Steve Houghton, Luke Gillespie, Corey Christiansen and Michael Spiro.

Allen received his bachelor’s degree in music from the Jacobs School and his master’s degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He lives in Bloomington with his wife and two children and performs frequently around the south-central Indiana area as a leader of his own quartet and as a member of the Latinjazz ensemble Ritmos Unidos, the Luke Gillespie Trio, and the fusion-oriented Splinter Group.

WFIU’s featured contemporary composer for the month of April is Katherine Hoover.

A recipient of the Composer’s Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Hoover was educated at the Eastman School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, where she taught for eight years.

Hoover’s compositions have been featured in performance by the Dorian, Sylvan, and Montclaire Quartets, as well as the Eroica Trio. Pianists Joseph Kalichstein, Christopher Taylor, and Anne Marie McDermott, and flutists Julius Baker, Carol Wincenc, and Jeffrey Kahner have performed her music.

Radiolab Sundays at 11 a.m.

April 7 Lost and Found Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich present stories about getting lost, and how our brains and our hearts help us find our way back home. We hear about a little girl who gets lost in front of her own house, meet a woman who has spent her entire life getting lost, and find out how our brains make maps of the world around us. We go to a military base to learn about some amazing feats of navigational wizardry, and are introduced to a group of people in Australia with impeccable orientation.

April 14 Laughter We all laugh—this hour of Radiolab asks why. We learn that that humor has very little to do with laughter. Along the way, we tickle some rats, listen in on a baby’s first laugh, talk to a group of professional laughers, and travel to Tanzania to investigate an outbreak of contagious laughter.

April 21 Choice

Katherine Hoover

Though Hoover’s output includes many works for flute, she also writes for specific performers on other instruments, such as Stitch-te Naku for Cello and Orchestra, for cellist Sharon Robinson and her Clarinet Concerto, composed for virtuoso jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels.

Hoover has received numerous awards for her compositions, including the Award in Composition from the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and first prize in the National Flute Association’s New Music Competition.

Hoover’s composition Dances and Variations was the subject of an Emmywinning documentary titled New Music, which traced the commissioning, rehearsal, and premiere of the work at the Kennedy Center.

Recordings of her works are available on the Delos, Summit, Cantilena and Koch labels.

WFIU will feature compositions by Katherine Hoover throughout the month of April.

Logic and emotion aren’t the only forces that guide our decisions. This hour of Radiolab: What other factors steer our choices? We turn up the volume on the voices in our heads, and try to make sense of the babble. Forget free will, some important decisions could come down to a steaming cup of coffee.

April 28 Stochasticity Stochasticity (a wonderfully slippery and smarty-pants word for randomness) may be at the very foundation of our lives. To understand how big a role it plays, we look at chance and patterns in sports, lottery tickets, and even the cells in our own body. Along the way, we talk to a woman suddenly consumed by a frenzied gambling addiction, meet two friends whose meeting seems to defy pure chance, and take a close look at some very noisy bacteria.

Handel: Concerti grossi, Op. 6 (Challenge Classics CC72570) Combattimento Consort Amsterdam Jan Willem de Vriend, director In 1739, George Frideric Handel undertook the massive effort that became a set of concerti grossi, or Grand Concertos. Combattimento Consort Amsterdam presents all 12 of the Opus 6 in a remarkable display of virtuosity.

April 8-14 Songs of Smaller Creatures and Other American Choral Works (Cedille CDR 90000 131) Grant Park Chorus Christopher Bell, conductor Along with standard repertoire works from Eric Whitacre, David Del Tredici, and Ned Rorem, the Grant Park Chorus presents four world premieres. Paul Crabtree’s Five Romantic Miniatures draws its texts from the words of characters on The Simpsons. Abbie Betnis’ and Lee Kesselman’s contributions focus on the insect kingdom. Starcy Garrop’s sets the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay in Sonnets of Desire, Longing, and Whimsy.

April 22-28 Aquarelles (Analekta) Valérie Milot, harp Aquarelles (“Watercolors”) presents transcriptions for harp of well-known works by late Romantic period masters such as Liszt, Satie, Debussy, and Smetana.

Milot’s crystal clear playing adds a new layer of beauty to these time-tested masterworks.

April 29-May 5 Mozart Flute Quartets (OUR Recordings 6.220570) Michala Petri, recorder Carolin Widmann, violin Ula Ulijona, viola Marta Sudraba, cello Veteran Danish recorder virtuosa Michala Petri presents a set of transcriptions for recorder of Mozart’s four flute quartets.

Her playing brings a fresh appreciation for Mozart’s work in this much underrepresented genre.

Throughout April, WFIU is joining stations nationwide in participating in the second annual Public Radio Music Month, an initiative that celebrates public radio stations’ role in America’s music culture.

Public Radio Music Month is an opportunity to showcase the rich tapestry of music found on public radio today, and the work that stations like WFIU do every day in preserving America’s musical traditions and fostering and nurturing the development of music talent.

Public radio stations provide a unique and increasingly rare platform for new and emerging artists, and serve as a staging ground for musical discovery. Without public radio, the survival of regional and national treasures such as jazz, zydeco, and folk—and with it, a slice of America’s cultural heritage—would be in jeopardy.

WFIU and other public radio stations play a key role in their local music economies, sustaining and growing the careers of musicians by connecting them to local listeners. Hundreds of renowned artists got their first big break from airplay on public radio.

As part of Public Radio Music Month, WFIU will feature several live in-studio performances of jazz and classical music during Classical Music with George Walker and Just You and Me as well as interviews with leading figures in the local music scene. April 7 – Rachel and Sara Caswell The Caswell Sisters, vocalist Rachel and violinist Sara, have shared a musical partnership since childhood. They co-lead the Caswell Sisters Quintet and have made such appearances as a weeklong engagement at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Rachel has performed with The Glenn Miller Orchestra among others, and has given numerous jazz vocal master classes throughout the U.S. Sara regularly performs with several ensembles, including Roseanna Vitro’s Randy Newman Project; and she toured five continents with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Both siblings studied jazz from an early age with David Baker. David Brent Johnson hosts.

April 14 – Randy White Randy White is the artistic director of Bloomington’s Cardinal Stage Company. Previously, he directed extensively in New York City and at regional theaters across the U.S., including the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Portland Center Stage, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. White assisted on Disney’s The Lion King for six months. He has directed and/or taught at Fordham, NYU Tisch, The University of Alberta, and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

He holds an MFA in directing from the University of Alberta in his native Canada. Murray McGibbon hosts. (repeat) April 21 – Maria Hinojosa Journalist Maria Hinojosa is the anchor and executive producer of the weekly NPR show Latino USA, and anchor of Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One from WGBH/La Plaza. She is also executive producer of America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa: Clarkston Georgia, the first public affairs program on PBS to be executive-produced and anchored by a Latina woman. Hinojosa has reported hundreds of important stories—from the immigrant work camps in New Orleans after Katrina, to teen girl victims of sexual harassment on the job, to Emmy Award-winning stories of the poor in Alabama. She is the author of two books including the memoir, Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son. Gena Asher hosts.

Jazz Notes Spring has sprung, and it’s Jazz Appreciation Month—not to mention Public Radio Music Month. Shoot, it’s even National Poetry Month . . . have we left anything out? Well, the WFIU jazz department has declared this April to be Cole Porter Appreciation Month, given that the IU Jacobs School of Music pays tribute to the Indiana-born composer at its annual Jazz Celebration Concert on Saturday, April 20.

Throughout the month David Brent Johnson, host of WFIU’s weekday afternoon jazz program Just You and Me, will play interpretations of Porter’s music.

You can also hear Porter on the April 19 edition of Afterglow.

Cole Porter is one of the composers highlighted in WFIU’s “Jazz Crossroads of America” series, which traces the history of Indiana jazz across four episodes.

We’ll re-air the series during the month, Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. on Just You and Me, and again on Night Lights Friday evenings at 10.

Hoagy Carmichael, Wes Montgomery, and early ragtime are just a few of the artists and topics covered in the series; along with the role that Indianapolis’ Indiana Avenue and the rise of jazz educators such as David Baker and Jamey Aebersold played in jazz history.

April 28 – Christine Barbour Christine Barbour is the former food columnist for the Bloomington Herald-Times and is the food editor for Bloom magazine. She is the author, with Scott Feickert, of Indiana Cooks! Great Restaurant Recipes for the Home Kitchen and, with Scott Hutcheson, Home Grown Indiana: A Food Lover’s Guide to Good Eating in the Hoosier State.

With her husband she co-wrote the textbook Keeping the Republic: Power and Citizenship in American Politics.

She is a co-director of Slow Food Bloomington, part of a movement that promotes a way of eating that is local, seasonal, leisurely, and convivial. Annie Corrigan hosts. (repeat)

The Racketeer by John Grisham Airs March 28 to May 1 Given the importance of what they do, the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five.

TED Radio Hour debuts Sundays at 4 p.m.

The latest addition to WFIU’s weekend lineup is the TED Radio Hour.

A co-production of NPR and TED, the series is based on riveting TED Talks by the world’s most remarkable minds given from the TED stage. The talks are bound together by a common theme—such as the thrill of space exploration, going to extremes, the source of happiness, or “when rights goes wrong” in our justice system.

Tentative episodes for this month include the April 7th program, “Beauty,” which explores how we see and define beauty. On April 14th, “Violence” examines how navigating a violent world can change us for better or for worse.

“Space” on the 21st is about mankind’s place in outer space and the universe.

On April 26th, “The Minds of Children” explores the fascinating minds of babies and children.

The TED Radio Hour is hosted by Guy Raz, who served for a decade as a correspondent covering Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Most recently Raz was weekend host of All Things Considered. During his tenure, he transformed the sound and format of the program, introducing the nowsignature “cover story” and creating the popular “Three-Minute Fiction” writing contest.

New Voices on WFIU Starting this month, you’ll hear two new on-air announcers on WFIU. Mark Chilla is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. At IU, he is pursuing a doctorate in music theory. He has taught various music theory courses at Indiana and Butler University, and at WFIU he serves as the new host of the music trivia show Ether Game. He enjoys film, learning new instruments, and the Beatles.

Alexandra Morphet grew up in South Africa, New York City, and England, and is now a naturalized U.S. citizen. She has a degree in Music from Yale University and sings in Bloomington’s chamber choir Voces Novae. Since receiving her MFA in costume design from IU, she has designed costumes for local theater and dance productions. She was trained in couture construction and creates custom clothing at her design studio. Alexandra listens to the radio while she works in her studio, and is delighted to be on the air to return the favor for all her fellow WFIU listeners.

Our thanks to outgoing Ether Game host Tom Berich for his outstanding work on the program. Tom and his wife are moving to Oregon, where he plans to continue his virtuoso music making on the steelpan.

April showers may bring May flowers, but the month also brings the task of filing income taxes by Tax Day, Monday, April 15th.

Most of us would like to take advantage of our charitable contributions on our federal income tax return, but we might not have enough deductions to itemize. If that describes your situation, you may want to know about a program that allows a state tax deduction for contributions made to an Indiana state college.

Since Indiana University is a state college, and because WFIU is licensed to Indiana University, your contributions to WFIU qualify under this program. If, for example, you were to make a $400 gift to WFIU, you could claim a $200 tax credit on your Indiana state taxes (if you file jointly), and up to $100 in credit on a $200 gift if you file singly. That credit comes right off the top of what you owe in state taxes.

Take advantage of this tax benefit by filling out Form CC40. It’s money back in your pocket.

Kind Hearted Woman is an unforgettable portrait of Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation.

The two-part documentary follows Robin over three years as she struggles to raise her two children and heal herself from the wounds of childhood sexual abuse— all while pursuing her dream of a college degree and a career as a social worker.

When Robin’s daughter reveals that her father has sexually abused her, echoing Robin’s own childhood abuse, it ignites both emotional turmoil and a dramatic criminal trial in federal court, during which Darian will have to testify against her father.

Robin’s battles in tribal court with her ex-husband for custody of the children, even after he is convicted of abusive sexual contact with his daughter, illuminate how serious this problem is on the reservation.

Filmmaker David Sutherland tells the story of Robin’s journey with the disarming intimacy of his previous films, The Farmer’s Wife and Country Boys.

Viewers gain access to heartbreaking scenes of Robin returning her children to her ex-husband after a visit; of intimate discussions between mother and daughter Darian about how she can protect herself from abuse; of the agonies of Robin’s young son, Anthony, as he struggles with the pain of not being able to see his father.

Robin’s quest to provide for her family, find a man to love, and fulfill her goal of returning to her reservation to help prevent the abuse of women and children, takes her on an inspiring journey of discovery and redemption.
