Jazz Notes ’Tis the season for holiday jazz! Our weekday afternoon jazz program Just You and Me will air recent holiday releases (including one from Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr.), Christmas classics, requests, and Yuletide music from Indiana artists throughout the week leading up to Christmas Day. On the Friday evening before Christmas, Afterglow will offer up “A Soul Christmas” with music by Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, and other R & B artists. And speaking of soul, we’re certain that Brother William Morris will be serving holiday fare on both the Friday and Saturday evening editions of The Soul Kitchen that weekend. Night Lights follows at 9 with “The Night before Christmas,” highlighting classic jazz from luminaries such as Dexter Gordon and Bill Evans. The following week, Just You and Me will take a look back at some of 2017’s most notable new and historical releases, reissues, live recordings, and jazz from Indiana artists. Brother William Morris will help us get a groove on for 2018 as well, and Afterglow will serenade us with “songs of the season” for winter. Stick around—it’s going to be a great year! Happy holidays from all of us at WFIU.

Making a Year-End Gift This is the time of year when many of us think about how much we’ve donated this year, and if we should do just a little more giving. Here are two savvy methods for endof-year giving: 1) When you give a gift of appreciated stock, you may avoid capital gains tax that would accrue if you’d simply sold the stock after it increased in value. The tax deduction you receive by giving appreciated assets, or stock, is often more valuable than what you normally get with a cash gift.

2) You can do an IRA Charitable Rollover if you are 70½ and need to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from your Traditional or Roth IRA. Ask your plan administrator to request a direct transfer of funds (up to $100,000) to a charitable organization from your IRA account. Although you can’t claim a charitable deduction, such a gift will satisfy your RMD and reduce your taxable income for the year—and is especially useful if you do not itemize your tax return. Both methods are easy, but if you want the donation to be completed in 2017, start soon! And please contact us so we can provide specific information and appropriate

Indiana’s state legislature has passed a law that lets Hoosiers be treated with cannabidiol (CBD), an oil derived from cannabis plants, which is giving children with epilepsy a second chance at life. Cannabidiol, Kids and Politics is a new half-hour documentary produced by e WFIU/WTIU News Bureau ey tt m i Chief Sara Wittmeyer. It tells W Sara the story of how families, medical practitioners, and legislators pushed for this law, which, according to one key player, “works like magic” for children who suffer from intractable epilepsy. Trent Jones of the National Institute for Cannabis and Endocannabinoid Research, says of CBD, “You can take a child whose brain is on fire, and [CBD] puts it out and the kid starts to emerge.” Learn what life is like for children suffering from seizure disorders, how CBD helps them, and meet the key players who championed the cause. Cannabidiol, Kids and Politics airs on Thursday, December 28 at 6:30 p.m. on WFIU and 8:30 p.m. on WFIU2.

Your generosity during our Fall Fund Drive helped local animals in need. For every pledge given to WFIU during Pet Tuesday, Tractor Supply Company of Ellettsville donated one pound of pet food to the Monroe County Humane Association Pet Food Pantry. Our listeners made gifts in honor of 119 cats and 111 dogs, for a total of 230 pounds of pet food delivered to the pantry! Kimberly Goy, director of development for the Monroe County Humane Association, said the pet food donation came just in time as the pantry was completely out of cat food. “Because of your willingness to try this partnership, there will be hundreds of happy kitties with full tummies in the coming days in Monroe and the surrounding counties,” Goy said.
