As part of the IU Jacobs School of Music’s Summer Music Series, the Verona Quartet performs live in a two-hour concert from Auer Hall. The Verona Quartet is the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the Jacobs School. Formerly known as the Wasmuth Quartet, the ensemble won Second Prize in the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, and has been awarded prizes at numerous other prestigious chamber music competitions. The musicians are Jonathan Ong (violin), Dorothy Ro (violin), Abigail Rojansky (viola), and Warren Hagerty (cello). They will perform works by Haydn, Beethoven, Webern, and Kelly Marie-Murphy. Sunday’s new sound WFIU is bringing a new sound to Sunday afternoons! The changes come June 14. Profiles moves from noon to 6 p.m. to become the permanent replacement for Sound Medicine, which ended production this spring. TED Radio Hour becomes the new noon program. With Heart and Voice and The Score are moving next door to other music programs, at 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., respectively. However, to allow Carnegie Hall Live to finish out its season, The Score will start in its new time on July 5. It will go on a three-week hiatus from its 2 p.m. time starting June 14. And three new shows are coming your way: At 1 p.m., Fresh Air Weekend offers another dose of Terry Gross for your Sunday. It’s everything you love about the weekday show—highlights of the best interviews and reviews from recent weeks—specially designed to be good weekend company. WFIU Presents follows at 2 p.m. It’s a weekly anthology of specials and short series, accompanied by our invitation to send comments about what you’d like to hear more of. Watch this space and stay close to the airwaves for more details. After Travel with Rick Steves, join us at 4 p.m. for On the Media. Each time out, Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield bring discussions about the week in journalism, technology, and the First Amendment. You Did It!
Eric Deggans is NPR’s first full-time TV critic. He started at the then-St. Petersburg Times in 1995 as its pop music critic and went on to become its TV critic while writing news stories and long-range trend pieces on the state of the local and national media industry. He then joined the Times’s editorial board and wrote bylined opinion columns. His writing has appeared in many outlets including The New York Times online, Salon, and The Washington Post. Deggans has contributed to The New Ethics of Journalism, and is the author of Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation. Trish Kerlé hosts.

Peter Weir is an Australian film director who played a leading role in the Australian new wave with such films as Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, and Gallipoli. The success of his 1982 drama The Year of Living Dangerously led Weir to direct a diverse group of American and international films including Witness, which earned him his first Oscar nomination as Best Director and was the first of his films to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. That was followed by Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander. His most recent picture is The Way Back. Jon Vickers hosts. June 21 – Joe Coleman Joe Coleman is a professor of practice at the IU Media School. He came to IU after spending two decades reporting from Latin America, Europe, and Asia. He spent many years writing about Japan and neighboring countries for the Associated Press, and also served as the AP’s bureau chief in Tokyo. His work has appeared in dozens of publications around the globe, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and the Yomiuri Shimbun, the world’s largest circulating daily paper. He is the author of Unfinished Work: The Struggle to Build an Aging American Workforce. Gena Asher hosts. June 28 – Arts and Disabilities The WFIU Arts Desk presents stories that were broadcast over the last year about people in Indiana living with disabilities. As distinct from one another as the individuals they profile, the pieces share common themes. They explore how professional artists cope with debilitating symptoms, and show how those who’ve never tried music, dance, or theater are using it to enrich their lives. The stories also report on the innovative ways that people are able to enjoy art forms previously off-limits to them. The reports were produced with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Yaël Ksander hosts.

This month on WTIU television Poldark on MASTERPIECE Sundays, June 21 to August 2 at 9pm Almost 40 years ago Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series, Poldark. Now the gallant captain rides again in eight exciting episodes, allowing a new generation to delight in the exploits of this unconventional romantic hero. Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover that his father is dead, his lands are ruined, and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Also starring is Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery servant Demelza, a strong-willed miner’s daughter who runs away from home and finds refuge in Poldark’s enlightened household.

Journalism students who worked with WFIU were honored recently by the Society of Professional Journalists with their regional Mark of Excellence Awards. The accolades point to a multi-year collaboration between WFIU and Sarah Neal-Estes’s audio storytelling classes in the Media School. IU Media School junior Kale Wilk took first place in Region 5’s Radio Feature category for “Farmer Chris Vosters Finds Comfort in Selling Kettle Corn.” Wilk’s profile of a Bloomington area farmer was produced with guidance from WFIU producer Annie Corrigan, and aired on Earth Eats. IU senior Anu Kumar was named a finalist in the Radio Feature category for her report “Women Spin a Common Thread from the Inside, Out.” Kumar worked with WFIU’s Yaël Ksander to produce her story about a Anu Kumar writing circle for women incarcerated in the Monroe County Correctional Center. The feature aired on WFIU in December during the morning and evening news magazines. Both features are archived at wfiu.org. The Media School’s American Student Radio was named a finalist in Region 5 for best use of multimedia. WFIU played an advisory and editorial role in the production of their transmedia project “How Do Stories Bring Us Together: The ASR Templeton K-6 Project,” for which Kindergarten through sixth grade students created a Web documentary and learned the basics of public media storytelling. While Kale’s feature is representing Region 5 at nationals, he will be interning with Earth Eats and the WFIU Arts Desk this summer. WFIU congratulates Kale, Anu, and their peers, and is proud to play a role in nurturing the next generation of radio and multimedia producers.
