Thank You! We’ve done it! On October 19, we wrapped another successful fund drive. And what we did, we never could have done without you. New, renewing, and additional gifts—many of them from sustaining donors—combined to help us toward a seven-day on-air pledge goal of $175,000. That figure is about what it will cost us over the year ahead to pay for some of the signature public radio programs given to us by NPR: Morning Edition, Fresh Air, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, Car Talk, Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me! Gifts from thousands of listeners like you also allow us to bring tens of thousands of Hoosiers some of the best classical and jazz music in the world, and essential information from close to home, thanks to our award-winning newsroom and arts desk. And, our second analog channel, WFIU2—once available only online and via HD Radio—now has a home at 101.9 FM in Bloomington. This means anyone nearby can hear 24 more hours of news and music per day without access to a high-tech device. Your gift helps extend our service to anyone who cares to listen. Once again, from all of us to a community of volunteers, corporate supporters, challenge donors, and listeners like you, thank you.

Underwriting: For information on how your business can underwrite particular programs on WFIU, call (800) 662-3311. Volunteers: Information about volunteer opportunities is available at (812) 855-1357, or by sending an email to wfiu@indiana.edu. WFIU Sustainers: To start a sustaining membership or to replace the credit or debit card information you’re using for your ongoing monthly donation, please call (800) 662-3311.

Sundays at 6 p.m. November 6 – Roger Cohen Roger Cohen is a journalist, author, and columnist for the International New York Times and The New York Times, where his columns appear every Tuesday and Friday. He has worked as a foreign correspondent in 15 countries, and now serves as Times’s foreign editor. His books include Hearts Grown Brutal: Sagas of Sarajevo and Soldiers and Slaves: American POWs Trapped by the Nazis’ Final Gamble, and a family memoir, The Girl from Human Street: Ghosts of Memory in a Jewish Family. Elaine Monaghan hosts. November 13 – Rick Prelinger Rick Prelinger is a collector of “ephemeral films”—advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur movies saved from oblivion. The Prelinger Archives, his collection of 60,000 of such films, is now held by the Library of Congress; a subset, the Prelinger Collection, consists of 6,500 films and is available on the online Internet Archive for free viewing, downloading, and reuse. He is the author of The Field Guide to Sponsored Films and he frequently speaks on archivesrelated issues. He is associate professor of Film & Digital Media at the University of California. Andy Findley hosts. November 20 – Jim Manion and Peter LoPilato Jim Manion is music director of Bloomington’s community radio station, WFHB, a role he has performed since the station’s inception. A Bloomington resident since 1972, his involvement with local music and alternative media led him to act as a dee jay at the campus/community cable FM station WQAX, write about music for The Primo Times and The Ryder magazine, and drum in a variety of bands. In the mid-1970s he joined the effort to launch WFHB—a process that took 17 years. Peter LoPilato is the publisher of The Ryder magazine, which he founded in 1980. He also founded and is the curator for The Ryder Film Series, which has been presenting foreign-language, independent, and classic American films in Bloomington for more than a quarter century. Yaël Ksander hosts both interviews. November 27 – William Morris William Morris is the host of WFIU’s weekday jazz program Just You and Me on Friday afternoons, for which he created the upbeat “Soul Kitchen” featuring funky jazz, R&B, gospel, and rock. He came to the station after five years of volunteering at community radio station WFHB, where he hosted such programs as the Tuesday Afternoon Music Mix, Hora Latina, and The Jazz Menagerie. A full-time staff attorney at Indiana Legal Services, he previously was in a private practice that concentrated on civil rights and employment discrimination. Will Murphy hosts.

Now that the dust of our autumn Fund Drive has settled (and thank you again for the support!), we can all start swinging into the holiday spirit. And while you won’t hear any seasonal jazz just yet on Just You and Me—we save that for mid-December—we can assure you that the usual good vibes will be heard in abundance this month. David Brent Johnson and Brother William Morris will serve up their fare of new and classic jazz, concert recordings, Indiana artists both past and present—and the ever-eclectic home cookin’ of the Friday-afternoon “Soul Kitchen” edition of the program. David will also welcome singer Thea Bransby to the show for an in-studio performance on Thursday, November 10 at 4 p.m. On Afterglow this month Mark Chilla features concert recordings from the iconic Nina Simone; a centennial Nina Simone tribute to arranger Billy May, who worked with singers such as Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra; a roundup of recent releases including music from Norah Jones and Kurt Elling; and a “Songs of Hearth and Home” for Thanksgiving. Afterglow airs at 8 p.m. every Friday, and now you can hear it as well on WFIU2 (101.9 FM in Bloomington) at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Stick around after Afterglow for Night Lights (Fridays at 9 p.m.; Sundays at 8 p.m. on WFIU2), with programs this month highlighting trombonist Curtis Fuller’s breakthrough year of 1957, Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force band, pianist Bill Evans’ return to the jazz scene after the tragic death of his bassist Scott LaFaro, and a program about the “jazz monk,” spiritual writer Thomas Merton. Happy Thanksgiving! November 2016 / Page 3

They seem to have philanthropy in their genes. Gallup found that 83% of Americans donate to charitable causes, and 65% of Americans volunteer their time in some capacity. Studies attest to the benefits of charitable giving and volunteering; that they create good feelings, a “warm glow” effect. Scientists believe that altruistic behavior releases endorphins in the brain that produce positive feelings.
