News and Music 48 Hours a Day: WFIU2 is On the Air!

2

On August 24, we quietly made a bit of station history. On that day, our second channel, previously available only online or with an HD Radio, signed on a new frequency: 101.9 FM. Using a temporary antenna, we beamed out all of 18 watts of power to the city of Bloomington and much of Monroe County. We have since installed a permanent antenna, and our signal has improved so dramatically that it’s time to reintroduce you to WFIU2. Here is some of what our second service has to offer:

• Much more news from NPR and the BBC. Hear another hour of Morning Edition at 9, and the first hour of All Things Considered at 4. In between you’ll find The Diane Rehm Show and Here and Now from NPR. And, we give you an hour of BBC weekdays at 1, and all night, every night of the week, starting by 9. • Much more music. For the first time in more than 30 years, we’re offering locally-hosted classical music for your early mornings. WFIU’s Music Director Joe Goetz is your host. WFIU2 also gives you another chance to hear Performance Today weekdays at 5, and to fill your weekend with choral, chamber, and orchestral music. • Second chances (or even first chances!) to catch many of the programs—Earth Eats, Café Indiana, Harmonia, Profiles, Afterglow, Night Lights—that we are proud to deliver to listeners like you here and around the world. Please consult our centerspread for full details about the program schedules on both our stations. If you’re in or near Bloomington, WFIU2 is available to you without any need for a digital device—a good old-fashioned radio tuned to 101.9 will do. Both channels will continue to appear at 103.7 FM within WFIU’s HD Radio footprint. And, you can still hear either service from anywhere, online at wfiu.org. We would love to hear how WFIU2 sounds to you! Please be sure to tell us where you’re listening when you drop a line with your thoughts to wfiu@indiana.edu. And, if you’re already in the habit of switching to WFIU2 for more music or news, then please know that we’re paying NPR and other networks more than $30,000 to make it possible this year—and please give a bit more generously at pledge time.

Bloomington 103.7 fm (WFIU) and 101.9 fm (WFIU2) • Columbus 100.7 fm • French Lick/West Baden 101.7 fm

“October’s in the air,” to quote a lovely tune by Indiana jazz legend Al Cobine. That means falling leaves, cool evenings, Halloween costumes and candy, and the WFIU Fund Drive, which starts Thursday, October 13. No tricks, just treats—only great jazz offerings. These include Basically Baker 2, a brand-new 2-CD set of the music of the late, great Indiana University jazz educator David Baker, performed by Indiana’s own BuselliWallarab Jazz Orchestra. We also have the new 2-CD Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra’s All My Yesterdays, which documents the first performances of one of the most influential big bands of the past 50 years. CDs like these are just some of the many ways we have of saying thanks when you help sustain WFIU and public radio in Indiana.
