Chris Thile to Host A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor has hosted A Prairie Home Companion for the final time. As Keillor becomes the show’s executive producer, it has been left to longtime APHC guest and master mandolinist Chris Thile to become the show’s second-ever emcee since it began in 1974. When the new season of APHC begins in October, Thile will take over as its new host. In the first year, we’ll broadcast 13 live Thile-hosted shows, surrounded by a slate of best-of broadcasts from the Keillor years. Thile (pronounced THEE-lee) has been playing mandolin on stage since he was 5 years old. At age 8, he launched Nickel Creek, a bluegrass trio that sold millions of albums and won a Grammy. Years later he formed the Punch Brothers band, and in 2012 was honored with a MacArthur “genius” Fellowship for his musical innovations. Thile made his first APHC appearance in 1996. As a guest host this season, he booked fantastic guests including Paul Simon, Andrew Bird, Brandi Carlisle, and Maria Bamford. As host, he will draw new, diverse talent— musicians, comics, poets, storytellers, and others. Keillor’s signature News from Lake Wobegon monologue will not be a part of the show, nor will the Royal Academy of Radio Acting. Thile says, though, that he intends to maintain a blend of music, spoken word, and comedy. He intends to bring to the show guests with cross-generational appeal, ranging from singers James Taylor, Dolly Parton, and Beyoncé, to comedians Sarah Silverman and Dave Chappelle. Tune in Saturday evenings at 6 p.m. on WFIU and Sundays at 5 p.m. on WFIU2.

Attention Indiana jazz fans! The BuselliWallarab Jazz Orchestra has recorded a new CD of big-band music written by David Baker, the world-renowned, longtime Indiana University jazz educator. Basically Baker 2, a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2007 release Basically Baker, comes out on September 23, and we’ll feature it the day before on the Thursday, September 22 “Jazz From Indiana” edition of Just You and Me. Tune into Just You and Me every weekday afternoon from 3–5 p.m. for new and classic jazz, live performances, your jazz requests, and a special “Soul Kitchen” edition hosted every Friday by William Morris.

John Coltrane

Speaking of September 23, that date will mark the 90th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, and our Friday-evening program Night Lights will celebrate with a full hour of the saxophonist’s music. Other Night Lights features include jazz women of the 1980s, the 1960s recordings of singer Nancy Wilson, live broadcasts from Boston’s Storyville nightclub in the 1950s, and American bebop artists in Europe in the late 1940s. Night Lights is preceded at 8 p.m. by Afterglow, which offers up a wideranging variety of forays into the popular American songbook this month with shows spotlighting the music of Mose Allison and Ray Charles, singer Dick Haymes (find out why we call him “Sinatra’s Shadow”), Marvin Gaye’s early ventures into the standards, songwriter Matt Dennis (composer of “Angel Eyes”), and, of course, “Songs of the Season,” because it’s just not autumn without an Afterglow program taking note of the falling leaves. Miss a Night Lights or Afterglow program that you’d like to catch later? Listen on our website at indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights or /afterglow. September 2016 / Page 3

This month on WTIU television Finding the Fix: Heroin’s Hold on the Heartland Thursday, September 29, 8 p.m. It’s been called “Ground Zero”—the shared borders of southern Ohio, southern Indiana, and northern Kentucky that has seen an unprecedented increase in drug overdose deaths and contractions of HIV and Hepatitis C. Between just 2013 and 2014, Indiana

saw a 9.6 percent increase in drug overdoses. Indiana Governor Mike Pence called it “the scourge of drug abuse and addiction” that has affected “every community in Indiana, large and small.” This new WFIU/WTIU documentary explores the increasing epidemic of heroin and opioid abuse in the Midwest. The film shows the connection between the increase in heroin abuse and the increase in the prescription of opioid painkillers. From 1999 to 2014, sales of prescription opioids in the U.S. nearly quadrupled. Twelve states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, have more prescriptions for opioid painkillers than people.

Life Insurance Makes An Extraordinary Charitable Gift

by Nancy Krueger, Gifts and Grants Officer

Name WFIU as a beneficiary of the policy. This is as simple as updating your beneficiary designation form with the policy holder. You can designate WFIU as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount, or make us the contingent beneficiary so that we will receive the balance of your policy only if your primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.

When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies—such as educating children now grown or providing financial security for a spouse now deceased—your policy can become a powerful way to support WFIU. There are three ways to give life insurance to WFIU through the Indiana University Foundation:

Make an outright gift of an existing policy. You can name us as owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. You may receive a federal income tax charitable deduction and reduce your future estate tax liability. If you continue to pay premiums on the policy, each payment is tax deductible as a charitable gift.

As a physician in the film explains, well-intentioned doctors “handed out painkillers like candy.” The documentary features graphic footage of addicts getting their fix and a wide array of poignant interviews with professionals in law enforcement and medicine, among others. “He says he’s been addicted for fifteen years off and on,” says one police officer. “I don’t tend to see addicts live that long.” “I know twenty-five families who have lost a child to a drug overdose,” laments a mother in the film. Finding the Fix: Heroin’s Hold on the Heartland was produced by WFIU/ WTIU in partnership with a team from Northern Kentucky University, Indiana University, and Franklin College. Make an outright gift of a new policy. You can take out a new policy and name WFIU as the owner and the beneficiary of the insurance contract. This method may be attractive for the younger donor. To complete your gift, contact your insurance company or go online to complete a beneficiary designation form. Remember, a beneficiary designation is always revocable should your circumstances or preferences change. When considering any charitable arrangements, it’s wise to consult a trusted financial or legal advisor. Contact nkrueger@ indiana.edu or call 812-855-2935 with any questions about gift opportunities at WFIU.
