Washington’s powerful storytelling style has led him to widespread acclaim, and he’s an innovator in the medium. Now in its sixth year, Snap Judgment is heard on nearly 350 public radio stations nationwide and reaches many more listeners via podcast. Tiny Desk Contest Winner Announced NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest received over 5,000 entries from all 50 states this year, but when it came to the winner, there could only be one: 34-year old Naia Izumi from Los Angeles. His submission “Soft Spoken” combined virtuosic guitar playing, a drum loop and some silky-smooth vocals, all recorded in the home studio he built in his garage. Next, Naia will go to Washington, D.C. to play his very own Tiny Desk concert. Then, he’ll head out on the road with Lagunitas Brewing Company for a national tour featuring other local contest entrants that the judges loved.

Remembering Carl Kasell NPR newscaster Carl Kasell, known for his role as judge and scorekeeper for Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me!, passed away on April 17 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease in Potomac, MD. He was 84.

Then, surprising everyone, Kasell unleashed a side of him that no one realized he had: comedy. Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! debuted in 1998; at the beginning, the show didn’t have a budget for actual prizes, so the “prize” for listeners was to have Kasell record the outgoing message on their answering machines. He ended up recording more than 2,000 messages. Host Peter Sagal remembers Kasell’s fun side fondly: “When we were in Las Vegas, we had him come onstage in a showgirl’s headdress. No matter what we asked him to do—silly voices, or weird stunts; we had him jump out of a cake once to make his entrance onstage— he did it [with] such joy and such dignity.” Kasell also was known for his affinity for magic tricks—fitting for a man who was such a wizard in his field.

8:00 PM AFTERGLOW Clifford Brown and the Singers This week on Afterglow, our spotlight is on the only three albums trumpeter Clifford Brown recorded with vocalists during his tragically short career. We’ll hear Brown’s work with Dinah Washington, Helen Merrill, and Sarah Vaughan. 9:00 PM NIGHT LIGHTS Caravan: Martial Solal, The Early Years 1950s and early 60s recordings by the French pianist.

For more than three decades, listeners heard Kasell’s commanding baritone every weekday morning. Getting his start in radio as a latenight radio DJ at age 16 and again in college at the University of North Carolina, Kasell would later move on to casting at a news-only station, just as the massive social and political happenings of the 1960s were taking place. In 1975, Kasell joined NPR as a part-time employee. Four years later, he announced the news for the first broadcast of a then-new show called Morning Edition. Over three decades, he became one of the network’s most recognized voices.

Your gifts help make WFIU’s vision a reality So much has changed in the nearly 70 years since WFIU first began. In many ways, public radio has grown up. What was once a struggling — almost experimental — operation has become a permanent and positive presence in the lives of so many in our listening area and across the country. We continue to depend upon regular membership contributions from old friends and new generations of listeners. But in the long run, our future will depend on special gifts from our most loyal friends who wish to help WFIU grow stronger and more stable for future generations. One of the most satisfying things about taking time to examine your estate plans is making Page 10 / June 2018

Bloomington campus one cannot help but be charmed by its natural topography, native limestone, and appealing architecture. But the campus’s beauty is not by chance. Careful planning and cultivation went into creating an environment that evokes feelings of admiration and wonder. Beautiful by Design explores distinctive features of this campus—and the reasons for its appeal. There are few places on campus where you can walk in a straight line, and this has been quite intentional. When the trustees moved the location of the university to Dunn’s Woods in 1884 after a fire destroyed the original facility, they also abandoned the square design of the Seminary campus. This mirrored

decisions that benefit worthy organizations you have supported during your lifetime. In fact, the most significant gifts nonprofits receive come from the estates of regular contributors who decide to share a portion of their assets after taking care of family and friends. Friends of public radio can express their deep commitment to WFIU by remembering us in their will, or naming WFIU as a beneficiary in their retirement or life insurance plans. This approach allows you to make a lasting contribution without affecting your current financial security and freedom — and in today’s world, that looks better and better! Through planning, you can help preserve the legacy of great music, and balanced news and leave a lasting legacy to your community.

a shift toward a liberal arts education and a newly placed value on science, independent thinking, and fostering new ideas. As the documentary reveals, this philosophy is embodied in every aspect of the campus scenery, with its curving paths, isles of green, buildings that look out on nature, courtyards, benches, and artworks that encourage reflection. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors can chart their own journey across campus, taking in the scenery and making new discoveries along the way. Learn more at wtiu.org/ beautifulbydesign.
