This Month’s Highlights Sherlock on Masterpiece: The Abominable Bride Friday, January 1 at 9pm; Sunday, January 10 at 10pm Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan, Inspector Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson also turn up at 221b Baker Street.

Finding Your Roots – Season 3 Tuesdays in January at 8pm Join Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as he delves into the genealogy of prominent Americans. A political organizer, actor, and artist learn how the legacy of slavery shaped their identities. Three powerful social commentators explore their shared Irish ancestry. Three show business figures discover how their ancestors struggled for freedom. And a trio of America’s funniest men uncovers family histories of tragedy.

Particle Fever Wednesday, January 6 at 10pm Follow six brilliant scientists as they search for the Higgs boson—the elusive particle that scientists hoped would explain why all matter has mass. Share in their joys and frustrations that accompany the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, built to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang.

In Performance at the White House Friday, January 8 at 9pm President and Mrs. Obama host an all-star musical tribute from the East Room, celebrating the cultural resonance of art and literature in unique American musical forms. Features performances by Buddy Guy, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Audra McDonald, Keb’ Mo’, Smokey Robinson, Trombone Shorty, Esperanza Spalding, Brian Stokes Mitchell, James Taylor, and Usher, with readings and remarks from Carol Burnett.

Nature: Natural Born Hustlers Wednesday, January 13, 20, and 27 at 8pm Discover the modus operandi of some of nature’s greatest animal con artists as they outwit predators, line up their next meal, and get the girl. “Staying Alive,” offers stories about unusual survival techniques. “The Hunger Hustle” reveals the duplicitous ways in which animals try to secure their next meal. And “Sex, Lies & Dirty Tricks” explores sneaky mating techniques.

Mercy Street Sundays at 10pm starting January 17 Based on true stories, this new six-episode series takes you beyond the battlefield and into the lives of a distinctive cast of characters—doctors, nurses, contraband laborers, and Southern loyalists—inhabiting the chaotic world of Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia, and the Mansion House Hospital in the early years of the Civil War.

Bonnie & Clyde: American Experience Tuesday, January 19 at 9pm Discover the true story of the most famous outlaw couple in American history, told through interviews with cultural historians and descendants of the outlaws and those who captured them. Though their exploits were romanticized, the Barrow gang was believed responsible for at least 13 murders, including two policemen, as well as robberies and kidnappings.

Great Performances at the Met: Il Trovatore Friday, January 22 at 9pm Anna Netrebko stars in her highly-anticipated Met role debut as the tortured heroine Leonora. Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Count di Luna in the first pairing of the two Russian superstars at the Met in more than a decade, with Yonghoon Lee as Manrico, Štefan Kocán as Ferrando, and Dolora Zajick in her signature role of the demented gypsy Azucena.

Jazz singer Beverly Kenney released her first solo album in 1956 at age 24. DownBeat magazine compared her favorably to Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Beverly Kenney and Ella Fitzgerald. But four years later she was dead from a drug overdose and since been largely forgotten in the United States, though she is a cult figure in Japan. Afterglow host Mark Chilla looks at the tragically short career of this underrated singer, showing how her seductive, melancholic, and breathy style was aligned with the cool jazz sensibilities of the late 1950s.

Downton Abbey – Season 6 Sundays at 9pm starting January 3 The top-rated PBS drama of all time approaches its climactic chapter as Downton Abbey enters its sixth and final season, bringing exciting closure to a remarkable series. Where will fate, passion, ambition, and duty lead television’s most beloved characters? The final season of Downton Abbey airs in nine enthralling episodes with the series finale airing Sunday, March 6. Season 6 opens in 1925 with a series of crises reflecting the momentous changes that are transforming society. Women’s rights have given Lady Mary and Lady Edith new positions of responsibility: Mary runs the estate, and Edith manages the magazine she inherited from Michael Gregson. Meanwhile, Tom Branson has left for Boston, and newlyweds Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge are trying their luck in Jazz Age New York. Anna Bates faces a murder charge, though many still suspect her husband. And for the rest of the servants, big doubts hang over their jobs. Will great houses and the fortunes that support them soon be gone?

Making their bittersweet farewells are members of the beloved cast, including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Phyllis Logan, Laura Carmichael, Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol, Sophie McShera, Robert James-Collier, Kevin Doyle, Samantha Bond, David Robb, Raquel Cassidy and Michael Fox. Count down the moments till the final season begins with Countdown to Downton Abbey on Sunday, January 3 at 8pm, which features interviews with the cast and filmmakers. Following the Episode 1 broadcast, enjoy clips and more interviews with the Downton cast and producers on Downton Abbey: A Celebration at 10:15pm.
