NOVA: Chasing Pluto Wednesday, July 15 at 9pm Join NOVA for a close encounter with New Horizon’s historic flyby of Pluto. The culmination of the spacecraft’s nineyear, three-billion-mile journey, the mission revealed the first, astonishingly detailed images of our most distant and mysterious neighbor—a strange, icy world at the very edge of our solar system.

Great Performances: Driving Miss Daisy Friday, July 17 at 9pm In Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Angela Lansbury stars as a well-to-do Jewish widow and James Earl Jones her African-American chauffeur. Bass-baritone Eric Owens stars as the goodhearted Porgy, a man who is disabled but strong and courageous. An interpreter of classic works and a champion of new music, Owens is equally at home in orchestral, recital, and operatic performances. He sees Porgy as melding vulnerability, strength, and ultimately anger. “There is a naiveté in there as well as goodness.”

Fridays at 8pm For the first three Fridays of July, Afterglow’s Mark Chilla looks back 60 years to explore vocal jazz in the mid-1950s. He starts on July 3 with a look at Frank Sinatra’s move to June Christy Capitol Records, where he created a set of early “concept” albums: Songs for Young Lovers, In the Wee Small Hours, and Songs for Swingin’ Lovers. The July 10 show is devoted to trumpeter Clifford Brown, who recorded with some of the best vocalists of that era: Helen Merrill, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan. The series wraps up on July 17 with appreciations of cool-jazz singer June Christy’s debut solo album Something Cool, Mel Tormé’s years with the Bethlehem label, and more.

Do you love British comedy on WTIU? We want to hear from you! This month we’re airing three programs that were selected based upon WTIU viewer requests or that have been popular in other markets. Watch the programs and then let us know which is your favorite.

Saturday, July 18, 8pm Last of the Summer Wine Three old men from Yorkshire who have never grown up face the trials of their fellow town citizens and everyday life, and stay young by reminiscing about the days of their youth and attempting feats not common to the elderly. Saturday, July 25, 8pm One Foot in the Grave Victor Meldrew is a retiree with an attitude who seems to attract bad luck. If he’s not driving his long suffering wife Margaret crazy with his constant moaning, he’s fighting with his neighbors.

Saturday, August 1, 8pm ’Allo ’Allo In WW2 France, René Artois runs a small café where Resistance fighters, Gestapo men, German Army officers and escaped Allied POWs interact daily, ignorant of one another’s true identity or presence, exasperating René. Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail

Tuesday-Wednesday, July 28-29 at 10pm On the 70th anniversary of the dawn of the nuclear age, WTIU presents two new thought-provoking documentaries. The Bomb shows how America developed the nuclear bomb and how the bomb continues to loom large in our lives. Uranium – Twisting the Dragon’s Tail unlocks the mysteries of one of the Earth’s most controversial elements. The Bomb is presented near the 70th anniversary of the Trinity test and the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Using state-of-the-art transfer techniques to turn recently declassified images into vivid, jaw-dropping footage, the program outlines how America developed the bomb, how it changed the world, and how it continues to loom large in our lives. The documentary includes interviews with historians, men and women who helped build the

weapon, former Secretary of State George Shultz and Secretary of Defense William Perry, and those who hold firsthand memories of seeing the first mushroom clouds fill the skies. In Uranium – Twisting the Dragon’s Tail, host and physicist Dr. Derek Muller embarks on an epic journey filmed on five continents to explain the fascinating details of uranium’s birth and life. Born from the collapse of a star, uranium has brought progress and destruction. It has revolutionized society from medicine to warfare. The element has profoundly shaped the past, will change the future, and will exist long after humans have left Earth. The two-hour program delivers a gripping story of an ancient element’s footprint on the world.
