This Month’s Highlights Time Scanners Tuesdays, July 1–15 at 8pm Join structural engineer Steve Burrows and his team as they use laser-scanning technology to “read” buildings, ruins, and landscapes from ancient worlds. In Egypt, they scan the pyramids to learn how the tombs of the pharaohs evolved from simple mud-brick structures to the most impressive buildings in the ancient world. In London, they venture inside the majestic dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral to determine how Christopher Wren overcame immense structural forces to support his dome. And in the ancient desert city of Petra, the team sheds new light on this architectural wonderland lost to the West for more than 1,000 years.

History Detectives Special Investigations Tuesdays, July 1–22 at 9pm History Detectives investigates cold cases from the past. On July 1st, the detectives seek the cause of one of the worst maritime naval disasters in U.S. history—the sinking of USS Sultana in 1865. The July 8 episode presents new information about the disappearance of the airplane that carried one of the most beloved entertainers of the World War II era, Glenn Miller. The unsolved murders from 1885 of six African-American servants and two white society women in Austin, Texas are the subject of the July 15 episode, and on July 22, the detectives investigate the 1975 disappearance of Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa.

Secrets of the Dead: The Mona Lisa Mystery Wednesday, July 9 at 10pm Analyze an early version of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece that was discovered in 2012 and discover a younger Mona Lisa than the one we know. Now, an elite group of art historians, research physicists, restoration experts, and forensic imaging specialists analyze the painting firsthand. They aim to verify the painting’s date, decipher hidden mathematical codes within it, and unravel the clues that point to Leonardo’s genuine hand.

My Wild Affair Wednesdays, July 16–August 6 at 8pm Watch extraordinary stories of the bonds between humans and their animal companions. The series premiere tells the story of Aisha, a baby elephant orphan, and Daphne Sheldrick, the woman who became her human foster parent. When Sheldrik left for a few days to attend her daughter’s wedding, Aisha stopped eating and died. Heartbroken, Sheldrik used the lessons learned from Aisha’s short life to help her save more than 150 orphans. “The Ape Who Went to College” (July 23) focuses on Chantek, an orangutan raised as a human child in the 1970s. The July 30 episode tells the story of Rupert, an orphaned rhinoceros who was brought up by a suburban family.

Sex in the Wild Wednesdays, July 16–August 6 at 10pm This four-part series, presented by anatomist Joy Reidenberg and veterinarian Mark Evans, examines the natural mating, birth, and rearing behaviors of four species—elephants, kangaroos, dolphins and orangutans. Jaw-dropping revelations and rare footage of animal births and mating behavior come from the Okavango Delta in Botswana to the Australian Outback, and from a Borneo rainforest to the waters of New Zealand. The series also highlights conservation and preservation efforts to protect endangered species, and explores growing attempts to safely control increasing populations of particular species, such as Botswana’s elephants.

Al Capone: Icon Tuesday, July 22 at 8pm Al Capone was one of the most notorious gangsters of the 20th century who murdered dozens of people and ordered the killing of hundreds of others. During Prohibition, his Chicago outfit raked in millions through gambling, prostitution, racketeering, and bootlegging. Celebrated by high society and feared by City Hall, Capone controlled his public image in a way never seen before. But that all changed when the bloody images of the St. Valentine’s massacre went public. This program asks, “Why are Americans still fascinated by this celebrity gangster?”

Friday, July 4 at 8pm and 9:30pm Two-time Emmy Award-winning television personality Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars) returns to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol to host the 34th annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, the country’s national Independence Day celebration. America’s favorite host leads an all-star cast in a patriotic evening of unrivaled musical performances by our nation’s biggest stars, with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. With 20 cameras positioned around the city, including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the Washington Monument, you are front and center for the greatest display of f fireworks

anywhere in the nation during this top-rated extravaganza. Capping off the show will be a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and A Capitol Fourth tradition. The program airs before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, as well as to our troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network.
