WTIU Receives Numerous National Awards
Spageddies Italian Kitchen (#46) Lafayette, IN Offer expired
Two WTIU-TV productions were recently awarded a bronze award in the 35th Annual Telly Awards. The Weekly Special: Thanksgiving Tidings episode, produced by Sarah Curtiss, and directed by Jay Kincaid, received the bronze award in the TV Program – Cultural category. Spirit of Brown County, produced by Jim Krause, was awarded a bronze award in the TV Programs – Documentary category. The WFIU-WTIU News team also won seven prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for its on-air and online reporting in 2013. The seven awards represent an unprecedented total in a single year for WFIU and WTIU. They also make ours the most-recognized smallmarket broadcast operation this year, and, following WBHM in Birmingham, Alabama, the second-most-decorated radio or TV newsroom in America. Lastly, the WFIU/WTIU News team did very well in this year’s Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) contest, collecting 25 awards.

This Month’s Highlights American Pharaoh Monday, June 16, 10pm Follow Bob Bradley, the American coach of the Egyptian National Football team, and the quest to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This documentary shows the team on and off the pitch, and offers a unique window into events unfolding in Egypt following the historic revolution. Bradley arrived in Cairo in late 2011 and found a country and a team in chaos. The rebuilding of the team offers a powerful metaphor for the rebuilding of Egypt and the country’s journey toward democracy.
American Masters: Tanaquil Le Clercq: Afternoon of a Faun Friday, June 20, 10pm Of all the great ballerinas, Tanaquil Le Clercq may have been the most transcendent, mesmerizing viewers and choreographers alike. Because of her extraordinary movement and unique personality on stage, she became a muse to two of the greatest choreographers in dance, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. She had love, fame, adoration, and was the foremost dancer of her day until it suddenly all stopped. At the age of 27, she was struck down by polio and paralyzed. She never danced again. The ballet world has been haunted by her story ever since. The film interweaves breathtaking archival footage with interviews of those who knew Le Clercq, including dancers Jacques D’Amboise and Arthur Mitchell.
Secrets of Underground London Sunday, June 22, 8pm On the surface, London is a buzzing, modern metropolis—but underneath lies a secret, hidden world, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. Explore 2,000 years of subterranean history: a world of ancient caves and perfectly preserved Roman remains; mysterious rivers and gruesome plague pits; impenetrable vaults and top-secret bunkers. Digging deep, the program unearths some of the most extraordinary stories of the darkest part of the city.

POV: When I Walk Monday, June 23, 10pm Jason DaSilva was 25 years old and a rising independent filmmaker when a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis changed everything—and inspired him to make another film. When I Walk is a candid and brave chronicle of one young man’s struggle to adapt to the harsh realities of MS, while holding on to his personal and creative life. With his body growing weaker, DaSilva’s spirits, and his film, get a boost from his mother’s tough love and the support of Alice Cook, who becomes his wife and filmmaking partner. The result is a life-affirming documentary filled with unexpected moments of joy and humor.
Masterpiece Mystery! Endeavour Season 2 Sunday June 29 through July 20, 9pm Shaun Evans returns for a second season as the rookie DC Endeavour Morse. In this season’s episodes: Morse investigates what appears to be a routine suicide until he discovers the dead man’s mysterious final message. At an isolated and dreary school for girls, an elderly man is murdered with a ceremonial dagger. A missing boy, a dead journalist, and an absconder from an open prison draw Morse into a chain of troubling events that could reveal horrors of the past. And the Oxford Strangler strikes again.
Last Tango in Halifax, Season 2 Sunday June 29 through August 3, 8pm In this uplifting comedy-drama, childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia have fallen for each other a second time when they are reunited after nearly six decades. Having come so close to losing each other forever thanks to Alan’s near fatal heart attack, he and Celia decide to have a romantic secret wedding as soon as possible. But how will their daughters react? The uptight Caroline and rebellious Gillian are discovering they actually like each other. However, Gillian’s need to own up to her night with Caroline’s exhusband John could jeopardize the soon-to-be stepsisters’ fledgling friendship.

The series delves into a wide assortment of topics in the world of classical music. Each week’s five episodes build off a single theme—ranging from composer biographies to explorations of various cultures, musical styles, and time periods—allowing for a greater deal of depth than would be impossible in a once-a-week program. Recently, McGlaughlin has devoted a week to profiling musical works inspired by Shakespeare, to celebrating great African-American composers, and to discovering and deciphering messages hidden within pieces of classical music.

Musical prodigy Stevie Wonder was recording albums at age 12, and his melodies have inspired artists of all genres and generations. In this celebration of twenty years Stevie Wonder. of Jazz at Lincoln Center broadcasts, the Stevie Wonder songbook is interpreted by the group The New York Times described as the “superbrain for what serious jazz sounds like now”—the SFJAZZ Collective. The Collective is an all-star award-winning jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performers/composers at work in jazz today: saxophonists Antonio Hart, Mark Turner, and Miguel Zenón, pianist Edward Simon, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, bassist Matt Penman, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and drummer Eric Harland.

Freedom Summer: American Experience Tuesday, June 24, 9pm
In the hot and deadly summer of 1964, the nation could not turn away from Mississippi. Over 10 memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in a historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in one of the nation’s most segregated states. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention in Atlantic City. Freedom Summer was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of 35 churches and the bombing of 70 homes and community centers.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Murder of Emmett Till), Freedom Summer highlights an overlooked but essential element of the civil rights movement: the patient and long-term efforts by outside activists and local citizens in Mississippi to organize communities and register black voters—even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death.
