This Month’s Highlights Craft in America: Industry Friday, May 2 at 10pm This film focuses on the business side of the handmade, highlighting the connection between the craftsman and consumer. At Oriole Mill in North Carolina, textile artist Bethanne Knudson is helping revive the economy of Asheville. In Gee’s Bend, Alabama, quilting has brought economic success to women whose remarkable quilts have astonished the world. At Lowell’s Boat Shop in Massachusetts, Graham McKay makes dories in a 220-year tradition of craftsmanship. And in New York City, Shane Yamane combines traditional techniques with modern technology to market his handmade jewelry.

INDEPENDENT LENS: A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power and Jayson Blair at The New York Times Monday, May 5 at 10pm This is the shocking story of Jayson Blair, a promising young African-American reporter for The New York Times, who plagiarized the work of other reporters and supplemented his own reporting with fabricated details. The fact that Blair is African-American was emphasized as accounts of the affair served up sordid details in a tale of deception, drug abuse, racism, mental illness, hierarchy, white guilt, and power struggles. Pundits hotly debated accusations of favoritism, lowered standards for minorities, and racism in the newsroom, while minority journalists said they felt as if their work was under the microscope because of Blair’s lies.

NOVA: Why Sharks Attack Wednesday, May 7 at 9pm Great white sharks have begun appearing in growing numbers off the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, not far from the waters where Steven Spielberg filmed Jaws. What’s behind the mysterious arrival of this apex predator in an area where it’s rarely been seen for hundreds of years? To separate fact from fear, NOVA works with leading shark experts to uncover the science behind the great white’s hunting instincts. With shark populations plummeting, scientists race to unlock the secrets of these powerful creatures of the deep in their quest to save people—and sharks.

O’Bannon Institute: Cultivating Leadership: Food for Thought Thursday, May 8 at 10pm

4 / wtiu.indiana.edu

The 11th Annual O’Bannon Institute for Community Service, hosted by Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington, addresses leadership and food culture. Headlined by Retired General Colin Powell, along with expert panel discussions and workshops, Hoosiers come together to talk and learn about becoming locally involved, and about politics surrounding food supply.

AMERICAN MASTERS: Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself Friday, May 16 at 9pm Famed participatory journalist George Plimpton was a writer, editor, amateur sportsman, and actor. He co-founded and worked as the editor of The Paris Review for 50 years; wrote for such magazines as Sports Illustrated; hung out with U.S. presidents; played quarterback for the Detroit Lions; photographed Playboy models; performed with the New York Philharmonic; boxed against Archie Moore; acted alongside Matt Damon; and wrote more than 15 books. This film portrays Plimpton’s experiences using his own narration, new interviews, and previously unseen material.

National Memorial Day Concert Sunday, May 25 at 8pm Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the 25th anniversary broadcast of this night of remembrance honoring the service of our men and women in uniform, their families at home, and all those who have given their lives for our country. Broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, this night of remembrance welcomes home veterans from Afghanistan, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, and looks back at the stories of service featured on previous years’ broadcasts.

D-Day Uncovered Tuesday, May 27 at 9pm D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. Planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and ships delivered 30,000 military vehicles and 160,000 soldiers onto the beaches. Once on the shore, the troops had to negotiate land mines, fearsome beach obstacles, and miles of barbed wire—while dodging the shells and bullets fired by a half-million German defenders. This film takes advantage of technology to re-create the landscape and allow viewers to switch between the macro and the micro—pulling back for the big picture and zooming in to a close-up of a single soldier on the battlefield.

Wendy Whelan: Moments of Grace Friday, May 30 at 10pm Wendy Whelan has been a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet for more than two decades, but she is still inspired by her childhood and roots in Kentucky, where she began dancing with the Louisville Ballet Company as a child. Follow Whelan as she comes home to participate in the Louisville Ballet’s 60th anniversary celebration. Back in New York, Whelan takes viewers behind the scenes through classes, warm ups, rehearsals, and finally, to the stage at Lincoln Center.

Coming Back with Wes Moore

Tuesdays at 8pm, May 13 through 27 U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore searches for answers to the most difficult questions facing war veterans. Coming Back (May 13) explores why some veterans easily reintegrate into society after deployment and why some struggle. Moore speaks with Bonnie Collins, mother of fellow officer Brian Collins, who committed suicide after marrying and starting a new career. The questions surrounding the tragedy initiate Wes’ desire to learn more about why some can get on with their lives while some cannot.

Fitting In (May 20) explores the notion of identity—how it’s altered during deployment and altered again on the return home. Moving Forward (May 27) examines veterans’ drive to find a new mission, to contribute, to be part of something bigger than themselves.
