Sunday, May 1, 8 p.m.
In 1969, Simon and Garfunkel recorded what would be their fifth and final studio album as a duo, spending more than 800 hours over a two-year span recording Bridge Over Troubled Water. The album reached No. 1 on Billboard Music Charts pop albums list and has since sold over 25 million copies worldwide. But during the making of this landmark work, which was embraced as a covenant of renewal, the team of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel was itself in the process of coming apart. In this special you’ll hear about the creation of Bridge Over Troubled Water from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, co-producer and engineer Roy Halee, and music journalist Bud Scoppa. Rita Houston hosts.
The Water-Energy Crunch— A Powerful Puzzle Sunday, May 29, 8 p.m.
Without water, we’d have practically no energy. Without energy—for cars, planes, laptops, smartphones, heating, cooling, and lighting—life as we know would end. This documentary looks at the coming clash between water and energy. We learn how engineers, communities, and countries are working on innovative solutions to balance our needs for water and energy. Segments include visits to: Yale University, where a new low-energy method of desalination could produce fresh water at half the price of existing methods; Malta, where a smart grid will monitor both water and electricity to clarify the connections between the two, and Penn State University, where efforts to clean sewage to generate electricity could become the ultimate trash to treasure story.

Freedom Riders: American Experience Courtesy of Tennessean
Monday, May 16 at 9pm and Sunday, May 22 at 1pm In 1961, segregation seemed to have an overwhelming grip on American society. Many states violently enforced the policy, while the federal government, under the Kennedy administration, remained indifferent, preoccupied with matters abroad. That is, until an integrated band of college On April 19, 1960, before they participated in the Freedom students—many of whom were the first in their Rides, C.T. Vivian, Diane Nash (front row on left) and other demonstrators marched to Nashville City Hall. families to attend a university—decided to risk everything and buy a ticket on a Greyhound bus bound for the Deep South. They called themselves the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. The self-proclaimed “Freedom Riders” came from all strata of American society—black and white, young and old, male and female, northern and southern. They embarked on the rides knowing the danger, but firmly committed to the ideals of non-violent protest, aware that their actions could provoke a savage response, but willing to put their lives on the line for the cause of justice. From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Wounded Knee, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, The Murder of Emmett Till), Freedom Riders is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil-rights activists. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of youth and what can result from the incredible combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds. Says director Nelson, “The lesson of the Freedom Rides is that great change can come from a few small steps taken by courageous people. And that sometimes to do any great thing, it’s important that we step out alone.”
