Give the Gift of Quality Local Television Kathie Lazerwitz loves the visual and performance arts opportunities that are so abundant in the Bloomington community. Kathie also values the variety of programs that WTIU offers her every day of the week. This summer Kathie Lazerwitz decided to set up a Charitable Gift Kathie Lazerwitz and her grandson. Annuity (CGA) for the benefit of WTIU. A philanthropist and savvy investor, Kathie knows she will receive a great tax deduction from her CGA gift as well as an annual annuity payment—a little extra for her active life. Kathie and her husband Jim lived in Gary, Indiana where she taught in the Gary Public School System for many years. She witnessed first-hand how important strong literacy skills are to children’s future success. Kathie knows WTIU and PBS care about kids and decided to direct her Charitable Gift Annuity to benefit the WTIU Children’s Programming Endowment.

This Month’s Highlights Penguins: Spy in the Huddle, A Nature Special Presentation Wednesdays, October 1 and 8 at 8pm These programs reveal the intimate, emotional, and amusing behavior of nature’s most devoted parents bringing up their young against the extraordinary odds. “First Steps” (10/1) reveals newborn emperors in Antarctica, rockhopper chicks in the Falklands, and Humboldt chicks in Peru. In “Growing Up” (10/8), chicks grow and eventually head to the sea, facing the same hazards their parents did.

MAKERS Tuesdays at 9pm American women discuss how they transformed their vocations. “Women in Comedy” (Sun 10/5 1pm) includes interviews with Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, and Mo’Nique. “Women in Hollywood” (10/7) showcases pioneers and present-day power players. “Women in Space” (10/14) documents women engineers, mathematicians, and astronauts. “Women in War” (10/21) looks at women nurses, soldiers, journalists, diplomats, and spies. “Women in Business” (10/28) includes interviews with Xerox CEO Ursula Burns and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.

How We Got to Now Wednesdays in October beginning 10/15 Steven Johnson uncovers ideas that created modern life. “Clean” (10/15, 9pm): Dirty water has killed millions, until unsung heroes cleaned up our world. “Time” (10/15, 10pm) explores how time tinkerers advanced navigation and work. “Glass” (10/22, 10pm) shows the importance of glass in art, science, disease prevention, and communications. “Light” (10/29, 10pm), examines pioneers who have changed genetic make-up, sleeping patterns, and architecture.

Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest Monday, October 27 6:30am; Friday, October 31 at 6:30am

4 / wtiu.indiana.edu

George is told about the “Legend of No Noggin”—a spooky tale about a hat-kicking scarecrow who haunts the countryside on Halloween. George and Allie are determined to take a picture of No Noggin to prove he’s real. But first, George needs to decide what he’s going to be for Halloween so he can win a costume contest and give the prize to the Man with the Yellow Hat.

PBS Fall Arts Festival LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: The Nance Friday, October 10 at 9pm Douglas Carter Beane’s play The Nance tells the story of Chauncey Miles, a headliner in 1930s New York, who faces a changing world and his own self-loathing during the fading twilight of burlesque. Nathan Lane was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor for his heartbreaking and hilarious portrayal of Miles. The cast includes Cady Huffman, Lewis J. Stadlen, Jenni Barber, and Jonny Orsini.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess From San Francisco Opera Friday, October 17 at 9pm This production stars bass-baritone Eric Owens as Porgy and soprano Laquita Mitchell as Bess in the turbulent story of a disabled man, the headstrong woman he loves, and the community that sustains them both. John DeMain conducts this American musical theater staple about an AfricanAmerican community on Catfish Row in coastal South Carolina. The classic score includes the celebrated jazz standard “Summertime.”

GREAT PERFORMANCES: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live! Friday, October 24 at 9pm Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga team up for a special concert from the stage of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater in New York City, performing selections from their new jazz recording, Cheek to Cheek. The duo handpicked standards by Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn and others. They are accompanied by the NYC jazz quintet led by Brian Newman, and joined by a big band and full orchestra.

Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room Friday, October 31 at 9pm Powerhouse entertainer and Great American Songbook champion Michael Feinstein headlines this all-star evening with performances by Tony winner Christine Ebersole; American Idol sensation Jessica Sanchez; dynamic tap duo the Manzari Brothers; Oscar-nominated June Squibb; and many more surprises. The performers take the stage at the famed Rainbow Room, the historic New York restaurant and nightclub where stars were born and legends perform.

Austin City Limits Celebrates 40 Years Friday, October 3 at 9pm

Austin City Limits, the longest-running music series in American television history, marks its 40th anniversary with this star-studded special. Guest hosted by Jeff Bridges, Matthew McConaughey, and Sheryl Crow, the two-hour broadcast features memorable moments from the show’s remarkable run. A lineup of ACL royalty, including Lyle Lovett, Grupo Fantasma, Doyle Bramhall II, Alabama Shakes, Robert Randolph, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd return to the ACL stage to pay tribute to the show’s enduring legacy. Highlights include the show opener as Bonnie Raitt, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, Jimmie Vaughan, and Gary Clark Jr. team up for the Sam & Dave classic “Wrap It Up.” Dream duets and choice collaborations include ACL Hall of Fame legend Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris on the Nelson-penned classic “Crazy” and Kris Kristofferson and Sheryl Crow’s

moving take on his signature “Me and Bobby McGee.” The Foo Fighters serve up a wild rendition of Texas cult hero Roky Erickson’s “Two Headed Dog,” recorded at the show’s original television studio especially for the occasion. Local legends Joe Ely and Robert Earl Keen showcase their troubadour roots and significance to the Austin music scene. Blues titan Buddy Guy offers an electrifying version of “Mary Had A Little Lamb.” And host Jeff Bridges performs the late singersongwriter Stephen Bruton’s song “What A Little Bit of Love Can Do” as a tribute to the influential Austin musician who inspired Bridges’ Oscarwinning portrayal in Crazy Heart.
