Sundays, April 2 to May 21 at 8pm In Season 6 the midwives laugh together, cry together, and support each other as never before, while continuing to address complex medical and personal dilemmas on their midwifery and nursing rounds. The season begins in 1962 and it is evident how times are changing—from increased liberation for women to the shadow of infamous gangsters to the introduction of new government policies.

Home Fires on MASTERPIECE Sundays, April 2 to May 7 at 9pm

As the conflict takes hold and the separation from their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers becomes more painful, the women rely on one another and on the friendships forged through village life.

Independent Lens: Newtown Monday, April 3 at 9pm

“Newtown” explores the aftermath of the mass shooting in 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 first-graders and six of their educators were killed. Secrets of the Dead: Leonardo, the Man who Saved Science Wednesday, April 5, 10pm

Leonardo da Vinci is well known for his inventions as well as his art. But new evidence shows that many of his ideas were realized long before he sketched them out in his notebooks—some even 1,700 years before. Was Leonardo a copycat? Investigators use up-to-date science to shed light on the unexplained.

NOVA: Holocaust Escape Tunnel Wednesday, April 19 at 9pm

An international team of archeologists make an extraordinary find—a hidden escape tunnel dug by Jewish prisoners at the Ponar execution pits in Lithuania. Craft in America: Nature Friday, April 21 at 10pm

Throughout history, the colors, textures, shapes, as well as scents and tastes of the physical world have inspired artists to produce works of astonishing dimension and power. In “Nature,” a sculptor, woodcarver, fiber artist, glass artist, and book artist explore the beauty and wonder of the natural world, challenging us to reassess our relationship to nature.

Wild Weather

Wednesday, April 26 at 10pm Experts show how weather works with experiments that transform simple ingredients such as wind, water, and temperature into something spectacular. The team recreates a desert dust storm and a dangerous fire whirl; fires a probe into a tornado; creates visual representations of thunder’s destructive power; and triggers an avalanche that uncovers secrets about the powder cloud’s acceleration.

Ends Service Starting this month, our Spanish-language channel WTIU-Español will cease operation. This is the result of a decision by V-me, the network that provides the Spanish programming, to phase out its service to PBS stations. We believe V-me is pursuing carriage on cable systems directly. WTIU has been a proud partner with V-Me since we launched our multicast service in 2009. WTIU-Español has served as a 24-hour channel stream that reached viewers in underserved Spanish speaking households. Some PBS series, including children’s programs (The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, Dinosaur Train, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and WordGirl) are available in Spanish with a Second Audio Program. You can access the SAP feature through the SAP, Audio, or MTS buttons on your remote control or television’s menu.

The Great War Monday to Wednesday, April 10 to 12 at 9pm The Great War is a six-hour, three-night event that premieres in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I on April 6, 1917. Drawing on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, the series tells the rich and complex story of the war from the perspectives of the nurses, journalists, aviators, and American troops who lived through it. Voices include Campbell Scott, Blythe Danner, Courtney Vance, and others. The series explores the experiences of AfricanAmerican and Latino soldiers, suffragists, NativeAmerican “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. The Great War shows how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson

steered the nation through three-and-a-half years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen; and how determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice (including the deadliest battle in American history) that left more than 53,000 men dead on the battlefield and more than 60,000 dead from disease. Join us for an in-depth examination of the cataclysm that brought America onto the world stage and changed the country back home forever: The Great War.
