This Month’s Highlights Reconstruction: America After the Civil War Tuesday, April 9 and 16 at 9pm Henry Louis Gates Jr. presents a vital new four-hour documentary series that explores the transformative years following the American Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss and revolutionary social change. The twelve years that composed the post-war Reconstruction era (1865-77) witnessed a seismic shift in the meaning of our democracy, with millions of former slaves and free black people seeking out their rightful place as equal citizens under the law.

Joseph Pulitzer: American Masters Friday, April 12 at 9pm A groundbreaking exploration of a newspaper magnate whose work is largely unknown to wide audiences, though ironically, the prize he endowed in his will has become recognizable around the world. Pulitzer’s story is a riveting variation on the American Dream narrative. Pulitzer (1847-1911) arrived in the United States during the Civil War as a penniless immigrant who spoke no English and proceeded to create two best-selling newspapers— and a major fortune. From the start of his career as a journalist, Pulitzer championed what he regarded as the sacred role of the free press in a democracy.

Breakthrough: The Ideas That Changed the World Wednesday, April 17 at 10pm Take a mind-blowing journey through human history, told through six iconic objects that modern people take for granted, and see how science, invention, and technology built on one another to change everything.

Boss: The Black Experience in Business Tuesday, April 23 at 8pm The history of business and entrepreneurship lies at the heart of the American story, but often absent from that narrative are the experiences of African Americans. Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson traces the lives of African American entrepreneurs over 150 years, from those bound by bondage to moguls at the top of milliondollar empires. 4 / wtiu.org

NOVA: Saving the Dead Sea Wednesday, April 24 at 9pm There’s no place on Earth like it. Cleopatra attributed her beauty to its secrets. King Herod built one of the world’s first health spas on its shores. And as the biblical story goes, “rocks and fire falling from the sky” buried Sodom and Gomorrah and the sea became “the sea of salt”—the Dead Sea. Now this wonder of the world is dying. Since 1976, its level has declined by more than 65 feet. Can the Dead Sea be saved?

Indiana Matters Thursday, April 25 at 8pm Opioid abuse, addiction, aging and Alzheimer’s, affordable health care...these are national matters, and they are Indiana matters that Hoosiers want to know more about. Join Indiana Matters for informed conversations about matters impacting Hoosiers around the state. The first episode explores environmental change in Indiana. You may submit questions or story ideas for the show at WTIU.org/indianamatters. Production support for the series comes from The Herald-Times.

State of the Art Friday, April 26 at 9pm A journey of artistic discovery: 100,000 miles, 1,000 destination in the search for 100 under-recognized American artists for one unforgettable exhibition. The curatorial team of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, crisscrossed the nation to find extraordinary contemporary art happening in unexpected places.

Nature: American Spring LIVE Monday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 1 at 8pm Spring is one of nature’s greatest performances—a time of rebirth, renewed energy and dramatic transformations. For three consecutive nights, Nature: American Spring LIVE presents the change from winter to spring in real time from iconic locations across America. Acclaimed news anchor Juju Chang will host the multi-platform event, with on-camera experts, including biologist Thor Hanson and entomologist Phil Torres, showing springtime phenomena in various locations across the country. wtiu.org / 5

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids Discover the Story of Holocaust Survivor and Hoosier Eva Kor As a 10-year-old “Mengele Twin,” Eva Kor suffered some of the worst of the Holocaust. At 50, she launched the biggest manhunt in history. Now in her 80s, she circles the globe to promote the lesson her journey has taught: healing through forgiveness. Narrated by Hollywood icon Ed Asner, Eva: A-7063 tells the full, astonishing story of this historic figure for the first time, tracking her from Auschwitz to Israel to the United States—even into the US Capitol for her jaw-dropping arrest—and ultimately to her courageous return to the Nazi death camp. The documentary reveals her hidden pain, unbridled rage and unextinguished love for humanity that transformed her into an international spokeswoman followed by millions. Eva is a triumph of hope, and this film is her legacy piece. “Eva is more than just a story,” says actor Elliot Gould. “She’s a revelation of what’s possible in the human condition.” Eva: A-7063 airs Sunday, April 7 at 6:30pm.

Les Misérables on Masterpiece Sundays at 9pm, beginning April 14 A blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life in award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. This enthralling television event (not a musical) airs in six episodes Sundays, April 14–May 19, 2019. Dominic West stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman and Adeel Akhtar are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O’Connor is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight. Also joining the extensive cast are David Bradley as Marius’ formidable grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand, and Derek Jacobi as the kindly Bishop of Digne, who rescues Valjean at his lowest ebb. One of the longest and most engaging novels ever written, with a plot that is as relevant today as in the socially tumultuous 19th century, Les Misérables is a challenging story to condense. Masterpiece veteran screenwriter Davies preserves Hugo’s intricate plotting, striking historical vignettes, powerful themes, and evocative characterizations, producing an epic television experience that is worthy of the original novel.

Les Misérables opens after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, which saw Napoleon’s final defeat by the English and their allies, a quarter of a century after the French Revolution. With Napoleon’s downfall, the French monarchy is restored—and the thwarted ideals of the republic go underground. For most of that quarter century, Valjean has been serving a sentence of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. On his release the same year as Waterloo, he immediately resorts to petty crime, risking re-arrest and a life sentence—a fate deemed virtually certain by his former jailer Javert. After this unpromising start, Valjean begins his difficult journey to redemption. But always lurking in the background is Javert, determined to bring him to justice for breaking parole and robbing a child. Establishing himself under a new name in a provincial town, Valjean seems safe at last. He prospers as a businessman and is eventually appointed mayor. One day, he gives work to a needy young woman, Fantine, who hides the fact that she is the unwed mother of a child named Cosette. As the plot unfolds, the stories of mother and daughter become inextricably entwined with that of the fugitive.
