wtiu.org/kids A New Chance at Life After much struggle by parents of children with epilepsy and other concerned individuals, the state legislature has passed a law that lets Hoosiers be treated with cannabidiol (CBD), an oil derived from cannabis plants. Cannabidiol, Kids and Politics, produced by WFIU/WTIU News
Bureau Chief Sara Wittmeyer, tells the story of how families, medical practitioners, and legislators pushed for this law.
The documentary airs on Thursday, December 28 at 8:30pm on WTIU. (repeats 12/29 at 6pm and 12/30 at 4pm)

Trent Jones, of the National Institute for Cannabis and Endocannabinoid Research, says that CBD “works like magic” for children who suffer from intractable epilepsy. “You can take a child whose brain is on fire, and [CBD] puts it out and the kid starts to emerge.” Learn what life is like for children who suffer from seizure disorders, how CBD helps them, and meet the key players who championed the cause. CBD is not the best treatment for everyone, but in some cases it’s giving kids with epilepsy a second chance at life.

Highlights Making a Year-End Gift This is the time of year when many of us think about how much we’ve donated to worthy causes, and if we should do just a little more giving. Here are two savvy methods for end-of-year giving: 1) When you give a gift of appreciated stock the tax deduction you receive by giving appreciated assets is often more valuable than what you normally get with a cash gift. 2) You can do an IRA Charitable Rollover if you are 70½ and need to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from your Traditional or Roth IRA. Ask your plan administrator to request a direct transfer of funds. Such a gift will satisfy your RMD and reduce your taxable income for the year—and is especially useful if you do not itemize your tax return. We encourage you to consult your financial advisor or attorney. Or contact the IU Foundation Office of Gift Planning at 800-558-8311, or contact Nancy Krueger at 812-855-2935 or nkrueger@indiana.edu.

The annual concert is one of the largest holiday performances in Indianapolis, and it includes familiar classics such as “Joy to the World,” “The First Noel,” and “O Holy Night.” It also features a classical seasonal repertoire that includes Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” and William Mathias’ “Sir Christemas.” The concert special also highlights the immense power of music in Indiana schools via the side-byside educational program Spotlight Choir that pairs a gifted local high school with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir for two pieces on the program.
