Join WTIU for a unique day trip to Madison, Indiana. Together with fellow members, we’ll experience a bit of the rich history Madison has to offer. Your guide for the day will be Indiana Living Legend Jim Madison, author of Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana. He’s handpicked a collection of sites including Lanier Mansion, the crown jewel of Madison’s Historic District. Motor coach transportation from Bloomington and lunch at the Falls Restaurant in Clifty Falls State Park are included!

Staff Pick of the Month Each month we ask a staff member to share with you how they use WTIU Passport to enhance their viewing experience. Favorite Shows American Masters, Austin City Limits, Independent Lens, This Old House, Woodwright’s Shop. Binge-worthy A Chef’s Life, The Weekly Special. I love to learn about people who are doing unusual things, and stories that aren’t widely known—which is probably why I can watch several episodes of The Weekly Special in a row. Plus, all of the stories and entertainers in the show are from our region, which is great!

Watchlist My Watchlist includes a lot of documentaries.

I have several older WTIU Specials in my Watchlist at the moment: Doc Counsilman: Making Waves, Hometown – A Journey through Terre Haute, Hoosier Hospitality: Craft Beer, Spanning Time: America’s Covered Bridges, and the original Wilderness Plots. I can’t wait to find some time to see these again. That’s the great thing about the Watchlist feature; you can add the programs to your stack as you find them, so that you don’t have to remember what you wanted to watch later. Then when you finally have some time, they’re all there waiting for you—on demand and ready to go.

Weekend Edition Sunday has a new host: Lulu Garcia-Navarro. As of January, NPR South America correspondent Garcia-Navarro began presiding over the two-hour newsmagazine that combines the news with colorful arts and human interest features, appealing to the curious and eclectic. Previously, Lulu Garcia-Navarro served as NPR’s correspondent based in Israel, reporting on stories happening throughout the Middle East. She was one of the first reporters to enter Libya after the 2011 Arab Spring uprising began and spent months painting a deep and vivid portrait of a country at war. Often at great personal risk, she captured history in the making with stunning insight, courage and humanity. Garcia-Navarro got her start in journalism as a freelancer with the BBC World Service and Voice of America, reporting from Cuba, Syria, Panama, and Europe. She later became a producer for Associated Press Television News before moving to AP Radio. While there, she covered post-September 11 events in Afghanistan and developments in Jerusalem. Weekend Edition Sunday features interviews with newsmakers, artists, scientists, politicians, musicians, writers, theologians and historians. The highlight for many listeners is the puzzle segment with Puzzlemaster Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times. Weekend Edition Saturday wraps up the week’s news and offers analysis and features on a range of topics including arts, sports, entertainment, and human interest. The two-hour program is hosted by NPR’s Scott Simon. Tune in to Weekend Edition on WFIU1 Saturdays and Sundays from 8 to 10 a.m.

Journey through the prolific life of author and activist Maya Angelou (1928–2014), best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, who gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before.

Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, Hillary Clinton, John Singleton, and

Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson. Surprising facets of Dr. Angelou’s life are unearthed in the film. She performed in the Jean Genet play The Blacks in 1961 with a cast of actors that included James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, and Lou Gossett, Jr. She had a career as a calypso singer and dancer in the 1950s and appeared in the movie Calypso Heat Wave. In the 1960s she went to the Cape Coast in Ghana, the terrible place where slave ships embarked hundreds of years ago. In the film, she describes the excitement of living in newly liberated Ghana and meeting with Malcolm X on his pilgrimage to Africa.
