wtiu.org/kids Celebrating 50 Years of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood On February 19, 1968, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood premiered on PBS and forever changed the landscape of children’s educational media. From the premiere until 2001, Mister Rogers faithfully brought his warm, deeply human messages to millions of viewers. While no longer in production, the series’ themes and lessons have proven to be both timeless and timely—as meaningful in today’s world as they were in the past. WTIU is setting aside one week this month to celebrate the legacy of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. From February 26 to March 2, we’ll present selected programs from the archive at 10am, Monday to Friday. The programs will preempt Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a show that builds on Fred Rogers’ tradition of quality children’s programming. Produced by the Fred Rogers Company, the award-winning animated series tells its engaging stories about the life of a preschooler using musical strategies grounded in Fred Rogers’ landmark social-emotional curriculum. Through imagination, creativity, and music, Daniel and his friends learn key social skills necessary for school and for life.

INDEPENDENT LENS: Tell Them We Are Rising – The Story of Black Colleges and Universities Monday, February 19 at 9pm Explore the pivotal role that historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played in shaping American history, culture, and national identity. The rich history of America’s HBCUs began before the end of slavery, flourished in the 20th century, and profoundly influenced the course of the nation for over 150 years—yet remains largely unknown. A haven for black intellectuals, artists, and revolutionaries, and a path of promise toward the American dream, HBCUs have educated leaders in every field for more than 150 years. The institutions nurtured some of the most influential Americans of our time, from Booker T. Washington to Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois to Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison to Oprah Winfrey, Alice Walker to Spike Lee. The documentary is directed by Stanley Nelson (Black Panthers, Freedom Riders), America’s foremost film chronicler of the African American experience.
