This Month’s Highlights Great Performances - From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2019 January 1 at 9pm Great Performances continues the cherished tradition of ringing in the new year with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra at the opulent Musikveriein, under the baton of Italian conductor and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti, featuring favorite Strauss family waltzes accompanied by the dancing of the Vienna State Ballet.

James Watson: American Masters January 2 at 10pm It is impossible to overstate the importance of James Watson’s contributions to science or the implications of his work for contemporary society. Yet he remains an enigma to most Americans, simply the first half of the phrase “Watson and Crick.” Throughout his life, Watson has continued his scientific work, from the laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor in New York. Not without controversy, he yet remains one of the most enduringly influential scientists alive.

Finding Your Roots Season 5 January 8 at 8pm Today’s brightest personalities discover the surprising stories buried within their own families. This season features an array of celebrated guests who are cultural trailblazers with fascinating family stories, including Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei; Emmy and Golden Globe Award winners Felicity Huffman, Laura Linney, and S. Epatha Merkerson; and actors Michael K. Williams, Andy Samberg, Chloe Sevigny, and Kal Penn. The roots of these guests cover the globe—from Samoa, Nigeria, Taiwan and Sicily to Iran, Ireland, India, and Cuba—and almost everywhere in between.

NOVA: Einstein’s Quantum Riddle January 9 at 9pm Quantum Entanglement still boggles physicists’ minds to this day, even though our understanding of it has its origins in the renaissance of early 20th-century quantum theory research. An experiment in the Canary Islands uses quasars at opposite ends of the universe to settle the debate over the physical phenomenon of quantum entanglement that the great Albert Einstein began long ago. 4 / wtiu.org

The Dictator’s Playbook January 9 at 10pm From Mussolini to Saddam Hussein, dictators have had a profound effect on the 20th century. How did they seize and wield power? What forces rose up against them or resisted them in secret? How did they finally come to the bitter end? This series answers those questions in six immersive hours, each a revealing portrait of brutality and power.

Victoria Season 3 on MASTERPIECE January 13 at 9pm Travel back to 1848 as revolution breaks out across Europe. In Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria. Jenna Coleman stars as the young but fearless monarch, facing a crisis that threatens to end her reign. The queen must navigate these tensions while also dealing with her family and personal struggles. Season 3 will explore Victoria’s frustration with her sexual relationship with Albert and with pregnancy in general.

The Swamp: American Experience January 15 at 9pm A tale of greed, hubris, and destruction, the film chronicles the repeated efforts to conquer what was once seen as a useless wasteland and the passionate efforts to preserve it. Told through the lives of a handful of colorful and resolute characters, from hucksters to politicians to unlikely activists, The Swamp explores the repeated efforts to transform what was seen as a vast and useless wasteland into an agricultural and urban paradise, ultimately leading to a passionate campaign to preserve America’s greatest wetland.

Independent Lens: The King January 28 at 9pm

Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki takes the King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip across America. From Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and beyond, the film traces the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. A diverse cast of Americans join the journey including Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers, and Dan Rather, among many others.

Find us on:

Journey Indiana Thursday at 8pm, beginning January 3 Join us this January for the premiere of our new locally-produced Indiana travel series Journey Indiana! Each week on Journey Indiana, hosts Ashley Dillard and Brandon Wentz will travel to new destinations across the state to discover the distinctive culture, history, people, and artistry that shape Indiana. Whether it is savoring a delectable treat from the world’s largest chocolate store, strolling through an outdoor sculpture trail, or exploring the history of the first electrically lighted city in the world, Dillard and Wentz will help Hoosiers experience their state like never before on Journey Indiana. “As a lifelong Hoosier, I am incredibly excited to be able to travel throughout the state, to meet new and interesting people, and to bring their stories to as wide an audience as possible,” says Jason Pear, Journey Indiana producer. “The whole team at WTIU is working hard to make this show a celebration of all things Indiana, and we hope you’ll join us on the journey.”

The first episode of Journey Indiana will explore the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown and a high-tech collaboration between Indiana University and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Viewers will also meet a muralist who goes to great heights to celebrate the Hoosier state and a Newburgh couple growing edible flowers—and more—in their backyard. Journey Indiana will air Thursdays at 8pm starting January 3. New episodes will also be available on the Journey Indiana website two days prior to the broadcast premiere. Production support for the series is provided by the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, Columbus Area Visitors Center, and Camp Brosius. Learn more about the series at journeyindiana.org.
