This Month’s Highlights Indiana Newsdesk – Season 4 Fridays at 6pm and Saturdays at 4pm To keep informed of what’s happening in politics, education, or the environment, the place to go is Indiana Newsdesk. Hosted by Joe Wren, this award-winning program from the WFIU/WTIU news team focuses on stories from our region and around the state. Each half-hour edition presents the week’s top headlines, interviews with the people behind the stories, and an in-depth look at timely issues.

The Great British Baking Show Fridays at 9pm (and 10pm starting July 15) Watch people from all walks of life compete to be named the U.K.’s best amateur baker. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. Judges Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer, and Paul Hollywood, a top artisan baker, test the competitors’ skills on cakes, breads, pastries, and desserts, crowning a winner after ten weeks of competition.

Hoosiers - The Story of Indiana Thursday, July 7 and 14 at 9pm; August 4 at 9pm and 10pm This four-part series is based on IU professor James Madison’s definitive history of Indiana. It explores Indiana’s 200-year history through the descendants of ordinary Hoosiers who lived through extraordinary times, while helping to shape the fabric of our state. The series reveals lesser-known details of the Hoosier story, and shows how the past, present, and future intersect to reveal the Indiana yet to come.

Music Gone Public Saturdays at 11pm beginning July 9 These ten live concerts are curated specially for public television viewers. They feature the best of blues, jazz, bluegrass, worldbeat, and rockabilly, recorded in venues from Vancouver to Las Vegas. Great musicians include multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven, Cajun violinist Tom Rigney, slide guitarist Roy Rogers, worldfusion group Delhi 2 Dublin, and the king of the Las Vegas strip, Frankie Moreno.

The Civil War: The Untold Story Sundays at 11:30pm This five-part series breaks new ground by examining America’s civil war through the lens of the Western Theater (the Appalachians to the Mississippi Valley). It provides new insights into the causes of the war, the political concerns of Abraham Lincoln, opposing politics between the Union and the Confederacy, and the surprising role that African Americans had in securing their own freedom.

POV: Pervert Park Monday, July 11 at 10pm Founded by the mother of a convicted sex offender, Florida Justice Transitions is a trailer park home to 120 sex offenders struggling to reintegrate into society as they fight different battles and demons. This film challenges us to understand how these men and women got here, and to consider how the destructive cycle of sexual abuse, and the silence surrounding it, can be broken.

MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! Inspector Lewis, Season 7 – Entry Wounds Sundays at 9pm starting July 17 In this three-part series, Hathaway gets to work on his first case as an inspector, with the help of his new partner Lizzie Maddox. The crime bridges the worlds of neurosurgery, blood sports, and animal rights. Lewis, struggling to adapt to retired life, jumps at the chance to rejoin the force when Superintendent Innocent seeks his help. With Lewis back on the team, will they be able to solve the mystery?

Great Performances at the Met: Turandot July 24 at 1pm Puccini’s final opera is one of the most spectacular productions in the Met repertory. Swedish dramatic soprano Nina Stemme sings the demanding title role of Puccini’s imperious Chinese princess and Marco Berti sings Calàf, the suitor who risks his head for Turandot’s hand. Paolo Carignani conducts Franco Zeffirelli’s visually stunning 1987 production. Renée Fleming hosts.

Bringing the Arts World Home to You The WFIU Arts Desk presents Café Indiana, a new Saturday morning half-hour roundup of the arts, culture, and leisure that make our area a special place to live. Any given week, you might hear an in-depth, sound-rich feature; an in-studio musical performance and conversation; an interview with an artist or author; an overview of that weekend’s best bets among all the goings-on in the area; and a commentary, a review, or a totally unexpected delight. The program will also offer telling glimpses of your town’s most creative people behind the scenes, and a fast-moving survey of the work they’re placing on view. Listen in for Café Indiana beginning Saturday, July 2 at 7 a.m., right before Earth Eats.

Discover Great Literature with Anthology Join us for a literary adventure each week with our new locally-grown series Anthology. Starting this month, Anthology will bring you fresh and unexpected perspectives on classic and contemporary literature from around the world. The one-hour program will feature writers who have been overlooked or neglected, lesser-known works by major writers, and literature in translation. Selections come from classic and contemporary short stories, serialized novellas, poetry, memoir and more, voiced by the Cricket’s Bone Caravan—a troupe of area actors, spoken-word artists, and storytellers. Producer Cynthia Wolfe seeks out writers with interesting life stories who overcame obstacles, as well as writers with unique or boundary-pushing perspectives. Heather Perry and Sarah Torbeck co-host the program. Rounding out the program will be interviews with scholars chosen for their fluency in communicating to general audiences. This month’s programs features segments on IU alumnus Theodore Dreiser, short fiction by Djuna Barnes and Sherwood Anderson, and a short story by the first African American woman to sell a million copies of a novel. Episodes from the Cricket’s Bone Caravan’s former series, WFHB’s Books Unbound, have been recognized by the HEAR Now Audio Fiction & Storytelling Festival, the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists, and Radio Free Asia. Anthology will premiere in a special edition of Profiles on Sunday, July 3 at 6 p.m. and thereafter be heard Sundays at 1 p.m.

A Capitol Fourth Monday, July 4 at 8pm and 9:30pm America’s national Independence Day celebration kicks off the festivities for our country’s 240th birthday with a star-spangled party and all-star salute. A Capitol Fourth airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before an audience of hundreds of thousands, millions at home, and our troops around the world via American Forces Network.

The White House – Inside Story Tuesday, July 12 at 8pm The White House is a symbol of shared national history and home to the most powerful person on Earth. This is where the president charts the course for the country, and the First Family lives in the spotlight. This two-hour special presentation takes you behind the scenes to meet the people who keep this house running smoothly, maintaining the power of the chief executive and guarding the privacy of the First Family. Its most familiar and least known spaces are uncovered, from the Oval Office to the residential dining room, from the hidden basement beneath the press room to the kitchens where chefs prepare for a state dinner.

See how the building and its operations have evolved over the past 200 years, changing with the currents of history as well as the tastes and concerns of its occupants. The story of the White House is the story of America itself.

PBS NewsHour Convention Coverage Monday to Thursday July 18–21 at 8pm (Republican) Monday to Thursday July 25–28 at 8pm (Democratic) Tune in for gavel-to-gavel primetime coverage of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, co-hosted by veteran journalists Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. Between speeches and events on the convention floor, Ifill and Woodruff will interview political newsmakers and solicit analysis and perspective from NewsHour regulars, presidential historians, and others.
