Spotlight This three-part American Experience series tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators, and American troops. The Great War remembers the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native American “code talkers,” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. It explores how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead

America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, and how determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in U.S. history. This Month’s Highlights A Capital Fourth

Tuesday, July 4 at 8pm and 9:30pm Celebrate our country’s 241st birthday with an all-star musical extravaganza broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Hosted by John Stamos, the featured artists include soul men Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi (The Blues Brothers), The Beach Boys, Broadway star Phillipa Soo, The Four Tops, actress-singer Sofia Carson, Trace Adkins, and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Nature’s Great Race

Wednesdays, July 12 to 26 at 9pm Follow caribou, zebra, and elephants as they face the immense challenges of migration. From treacherous terrain to merciless predators, the animals risk death in a race for their lives. The documentary gives you a front-row seat to breathtaking spectacles in Canada, Alaska, and southern and eastern Africa, as the animal groups face the ultimate test of survival.

Remember Me

Sundays, July 16 to 30 at 10pm This chilling three-part British mystery drama stars Michael Palin as Tom Parfitt, an elderly Yorkshire man whose admittance to a nursing home triggers a series of inexplicable events. His teenage care assistant and a police detective try to unravel the riddle of Parfitt’s mysterious past as they are drawn into an eerie and dangerous world of lost love and betrayal.

POV: Presenting Princess Shaw July 17 at 10pm

Samantha Montgomery, a caretaker at a New Orleans nursing home by day, moonlights as a singer-songwriter under the stage name Princess Shaw. Her dreams of stardom come closer to reality when an Israeli producer 7,000 miles away discovers her on a video-sharing site and creates a collaboration that brings her music to an international audience.

Weekend in Havana Tuesday, July 18 at 8pm

Geoffrey Baer travels to the capital city of Havana, Cuba after its recent re-opening to Americans. There, he meets a local architect, a dancer, and a musician who share with him the culture and history of this beautiful, sensuous city. Through their eyes, he sees Havana’s richness and history in an entirely new way.

Wild Alaska Live

Sundays, July 23 and 26 at 8pm; Wednesday, July 26 at 8pm Witness a natural spectacle playing out across the vast Alaskan wilderness, where bears, wolves, moose, orcas, and eagles gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast. This three-part, multi-platform production is hosted by zoologists, adventurers, and brothers Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt.

POV: Joe’s Violin/Shalom Italia July 24 at 10pm

In the Oscar-nominated short film Joe’s Violin, a donated violin becomes the unlikely catalyst for a friendship between a 91-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor and a 12-year-old Bronx schoolgirl. In Shalom Italia, three Italian-Jewish brothers set off on a journey through Tuscany in search of a cave where they hid as children to escape the Nazis.

Summer of Love: American Experience Tuesday, July 25 at 8pm

In the summer of 1967, thousands of young people from across the country flocked to San Francisco’s HaightAshbury district to join the hippie movement. Interviews with actor Peter Coyote, politician Willie Brown, police officers, teenage runaways, non-hippie residents, and scholars, offer a complex portrait of the event that many consider the peak of the 1960s counter-culture movement.

Make your voice heard on the value of public media President Trump’s full federal budget proposal calls for zeroing out public media. The White House document would allow only for enough money to close out the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. We need your help to keep that federal funding intact. We know that there is strong bipartisan support for public broadcasting in Congress and across the country—on both sides of the aisle. But we can’t take that support for granted. Without it, WFIU and WTIU would lose about 15% of our funding. This would have a devastating effect on the seed money that helps us raise local and regional funds to support the programs and services our viewers and listeners have come to expect. Public media is one of America’s best investments at about $1.35 per citizen each year—a drop in the bucket of the federal budget. Please help ensure that public media receives the critical investments needed to continue to deliver on our important mission. •G o to Protect My Public Media (protectmypublicmedia.org) and sign the petition to help save local stations. •C ontact your senators and member of Congress directly. Highlights Stephen Foster: America’s Bard

Tuesday, July 4 at 9pm Join us for this celebration of the songs of Stephen Foster, who has been called “the father of American music.” In 19th-century America, popular songs were churned out by the dozens, but no other composer of the day wrote as many great songs with as much sticking power. We all grew up singing “Oh! Susannah,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” and “Old Folks at Home.” This one-hour program, written and hosted by Naomi Lewin of New York’s WQXR, includes those songs, and many others, plus instrumental numbers. Among the performers: Marilyn Horne, Thomas Hampson, Jan DeGaetani, Itzhak Perlman, and Leopold Stokowski leading the Philadelphia Orchestra.

RARE – Creatures of the Photo Ark Tuesdays, July 18 to August 1 at 9pm Join National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore as he travels the globe to create the Photo Ark, documenting every species at risk of extinction.

The Photo Ark project is a digital “collection” of the world’s mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles and insects, and the focus of RARE – Creatures of the Photo Ark. This captivating new three-part series follows Sartore as he documents threatened species at zoos, in nature preserves, and in the wild. Sartore has thus far traveled to nearly 40 countries to photograph 6,395 species for the Photo Ark. Racing against time, Sartore sometimes photographs 30 to 40 species in a few days. Others are disappearing before he can get to them. In Madagascar, lemurs playfully crawl to Sartore’s camera during one of his easiest photography shoots. Others are more challenging: No amount of tasty

raw carrots can persuade a 500-pound, 150-year-old giant tortoise to get ready for his close-up. In Florida, a photo of an elusive bunny taking refuge near an active U.S. Navy airstrip has taken four years to procure. Sartore’s images of parrots in South America and koalas in Australia prompted local governments to protect them. In the U.S., coverage of the Photo Ark has helped to save the Florida grasshopper sparrow and the Salt Creek tiger beetle. In one of RARE’s most emotional moments, Sartore’s camera records a northern white rhino—a very old female and, at the time, one of only five remaining in the world.

Follow Joel Sartore’s adventures at #RarePBS.
