Staff Pick of the Month Each month we ask a staff member to share with you how they use WTIU Passport to enhance their viewing experience. Favorite Shows Frontline, NOVA, American Experience, PBS NewsHour, Masterpiece, and Masterpiece Mystery. I value the local documentaries that WTIU produces, such as Lew Wallace and Along the Wabash. I’m also looking forward to our upcoming production on James Whitcomb Riley. My husband loves Antiques Roadshow—we’re always hoping we have the $30,000 item up in the attic.
Nancy Krueger Gifts and Grants Officer
Binge-worthy I don’t have cable or satellite, so I depend on PBS programming and there are so many good options. This past fall I binge-watched a new Masterpiece series, The Durrells in Corfu. Now, I am excited
to know that all episodes of Season One of Victoria are available on Passport simultaneously! Watchlist I am not big on sitting down for TV (except for FRONTLINE and Masterpiece— you have to focus!) So I have a small television in my kitchen where I can watch shows I’ve missed while I’m making dinner or doing dishes. These include episodes of NOVA or Nature, PBS NewsHour, and Secrets of the Six Wives of Henry VIII. I love the period pieces, especially Sherlock—I have to watch all those episodes twice! I love them.

Highlights Melissa Block is on the road in Our Land NPR special correspondent Melissa Block is on a road trip and listening tour of the iss U.S., learning how Americans’ aB loc k identities are shaped by where they live, and reporting to us in a new series called Our Land. Over the next several months, she’ll profile communities large and small to capture how people’s worldviews are shaped by their environments. Questions she’ll explore include: What does it mean to be from where you are? What gives you pride? How has your community’s identity evolved over time? What does the future look like to you and others around you? Each story will be strongly rooted in a sense of place, both from the voices heard and the scenes described. The first leg of Block’s itinerary includes three cities called Independence: from Independence, Kansas to Independence, Missouri (home of Harry S Truman); and Independence, Iowa. Block will then navigate the South to states to be determined. The four-to-seven minute Our Land reports can be heard on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, and on NPR’s digital platforms. You can follow Melissa Block’s travels via Twitter and Instagram. el M

Assembly Hall: Pride of Indiana Tuesday, March 7 at 8pm “The Carnegie Hall of college basketball” is the subject of a new documentary from WTIU Public Television. Assembly Hall: Pride of Indiana explores the history, stories, and secrets behind IU’s iconic venue. Delve into the fascinating story of how Assembly Hall was conceived, designed, and built—and learn about the strong-armed backroom politics that resulted in the building’s final design. The program looks at Assembly Hall’s uses outside of basketball, including as a music venue, and even as the home to a circus—that vowed never to return. IU had first drawn up plans for Assembly Hall to include space for an ice rink underneath the basketball court, but, some people claim, Bob Knight had other ideas. Just after the Assembly Hall was finished, the music industry entered a golden age of concert tours and performances. The Rolling Stones, Elton John, and many others made their way to the Assembly Hall—and most hated the acoustics.
See the Cook Hall tunnel, “nose bleed seats,” and the hallway where the Indiana Farm Bureau brought “The Mop Lady” to life. And learn what saved Assembly Hall after the IU administration had voted for its demolition. The documentary includes interviews with IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass, former IU basketball player and Pacers coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard, Hoosiers screenwriter and producer Angelo Pizzo, IU’s Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities Chuck Crabb, former HeraldTimes columnist Mike Leonard, and IU Vice President Emeritus Terry Clapacs. Visit the program’s companion website at wtiu.org/ assemblyhall.
