Spotlight Uncover the new family mysteries and surprises featured in the latest season of Finding Your Roots! WTIU Passport members can now stream all episodes of Season 4 with Henry Louis Gates Jr. and a brand new group of popular actors, politicians and cultural trailblazers. The 10-episode season features 28 fascinating guests connected by similar family histories – and, in one case, DNA. The season begins with comedian Larry David and politician Bernie Sanders as they discover a surprising link between the two of them in the episode “The Impression.”
Finding Your Roots
“Unfamiliar Kin” features actors Fred Armisen and Christopher Walken and musician Carly Simon as they each learn about a grandparent whose real identity
had always been a mystery to them. Journalists Bryant Gumbel and Suzanne Malveaux and producer and writer Tonya Lewis-Lee learn that there is no universal African American narrative in “Black Like Me.” All episodes of Season 4 are now streaming. Passport also gives you access to all previous seasons of the acclaimed series with guests including Barbara Walters, Angela Bassett, Norman Lear and dozens more! Not using Passport yet? Nine men and women for whom death is no longer an abstraction, grapple with universal questions posed by our mortality. How do we endure when we know death is near—with defiance, humor, or more commonly, with denial? What story gives our lives meaning in the face of death, and will it sustain us at the end? (Repeats 3/26 9pm, 3/28 4am, 3/30 2am)
Dolores
Tuesday, March 27 at 9pm One of the most important, yet least known activists of our time, Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez. Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century— and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Hillary Clinton, Angela Davis, her children and more, Dolores is an intimate and inspiring portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed.

sig nI nter
De
WFIU and WTIU are creating an Internship Endowment to help. The Endowment will support internship opportunities for IU students seeking real world experiences in broadcast media. Students will work in paying positions at WFIU and WTIU—receiving practical broadcast experiences, earning part of their college costs, and learning media technologies.
n
With rising college costs and financial pressure facing traditional media outlets, media students are struggling to find paying internships.
c hi rap oG Tommy DeNard
Philanthropic support from donors will be combined with a match from Radio-Television Services to fund paid internships at WFIU and WTIU in areas that include graphics, studio and field production, radio and TV programming, media marketing and management, news writing, audio editing and story creation, and research. There are many ways you can donate to the Internship Endowment: Make an outright gift of cash or stock; create a qualifying Charitable Gift Annuity; include a bequest through your will or estate plans; make a pledge to be fulfilled over a five-year period; or contribute to our multi-donor endowment account. To learn more, visit indianapublicmedia.org/support/working-students-in-media or call 812-855-2935.

Highlights Could It Be You Behind the Tiny Desk? NPR Music is at it again with a call for unsigned musicians of all genres: Show us why you should perform in the iconic Tiny Desk concert series by submitting an original video of you or your band playing behind a desk of your choosing. The winner of the Contest will secure a spot at the legendary performance space and a U.S. tour with NPR Music. Bands and musicians can submit video entries to the Tiny Desk Contest through Sunday, March 25, at NPR.org/TinyDeskContest. The winner will be chosen in late April. Over the past three years of the Contest, NPR Music has seen thousands of entries from all 50 states, has furthered its mission as a platform for music discovery, and has catapulted winners to tremendous success. Last year’s winner, the New Orleans soul group Tank and the Bangas, currently is touring Australia and New Zealand. 2016’s winner, violinist Gaelynn Lea, has released two albums and played shows worldwide. Fantastic Negrito, the 2015 Contest winner, nabbed a Grammy last year for Best Contemporary Blues Album. “This Contest has brought out the creatives in our country,” says Bob Boilen, who hosts All Songs Considered Friday nights at 7 on WFIU2, and who developed the Tiny Desk concert series in 2008. “Over the last three years, the Contest has celebrated the vibrant music community. I simply can’t wait to see and hear what we get in this year.” Though there is one winner every year, artists have benefited from joining the Tiny Desk Contest community—whether they’re featured on the Contest’s music discovery Tumblr page, the weekly newsletter with thousands of subscribers, one of the Tiny Desk supercut videos, one of the local tour stops, or even a Tiny Desk concert down the line. Musicians interested in entering the 2018 Contest must play one original song at a desk (any desk—get creative), upload a video of the performance to YouTube, and submit with the entry form at NPR.org/TinyDeskContest. NPR Music welcomes music from all genres, and entrants from previous years are encouraged to participate again this round with new material. Eligible artists must be at least 21 years old and live in the U.S.

Indiana’s Wild Landscape Monday, March 5 at 8pm Also on Travel through the landscapes of Indiana as they are seen as never before—in the air, on the ground, and beneath your feet. Indiana’s Wild Landscape uses striking aerial drone footage and time-lapse techniques not available just a few years ago to give you a fresh look at the Hoosier state. A few hundred years ago, old growth forests, tall grass prairies, and one of the largest wetlands in the country covered Indiana. But by the 21st century Indiana was one of the most developed of the United States. Nearly all the forests had been cut down at least once, the wetlands largely drained, and the landscape now one of agriculture, small towns, and large cities. Yet the wild landscape of centuries past persists throughout the state. Ancient woodlands with trees stretching more than a hundred feet into the sky. Thousands of
acres of wilderness forests. At the Indiana Dunes, a landscape seemingly more suited to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the Ohio River cypress swamps can be found, looking more like the Gulf Coast than the Midwest. Nearby, an underground wilderness is perhaps the least known area of the state, with cavernous rooms, blind cave creatures, flowing rivers, and rock formations millions of years old. From hidden waterfalls and glacially carved gorges, through the canopy of an ancient forest, to one of the largest prairie restoration projects in the country, Indiana is still a wild place.
