WTIU Celebrates 50 Years on the Air! When WTIU went on the air in 1969, PBS had not even been founded. There were only three networks and many Americans could not even receive all of those. The challenge for a new public TV station was producing and procuring enlightening programming that added to existing media. Our mission ever since has been to educate and inform, to foster community, and to engage in civil discourse. The leadership of founding director Donley Feddersen set the tone. Bill Kroll expanded the staff and enhanced equipment. Don Agostino solidified the University and academic relationships. In recent years, we have focused on expanding local and state news, Indiana content, and digital offerings. And all of it has been possible through generous support from viewers, corporate partners, and Indiana University. Thank you.

Timeline 1950s: Creation of IU Radio-TV Indiana University Radio and Television Services (IURTS) and the Telecommunications academic department are created. Four studios are developed in a Quonset hut building on IU’s Bloomington campus, where the Jordan Avenue parking garage now stands. Like a lot of TV at the time, all programs
are initially produced live, as the studios have no recording or playback capabilities. In 1956, the department would acquire a Kinescope recorder, allowing recording on 16mm film. In 1960, the department got its first tape recorder, an RCA TRT-1. 6 / wtiu.org
1963: IU Radio & TV Center Opens In summer 1963, IU Radio-TV Services moves out of the Quonset huts, and into the newly built Radio & TV Center, adjoining the Fine Arts building. The facility still houses WTIU today.
1965: Equipment Upgrade IURTS begins working with two educational television organizations which moved to Bloomington: the Public Television Library (PTL) and the National Center for School and College Television (NCSCT), allowing for a significant upgrade in video production equipment. New Ampex 2 tape recorders allowed IURTS to run a tape duplication service, which in turn helped to pay for the state-of-the-art equipment. Other new machines included an Ampex Editec, enabling electronic editing of videotape rather than splicing, and a 3M-3450 character generator, enabling on-screen text.
1967: Public Broadcasting Act President Lyndon Baines Johnson signs the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, establishing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and, eventually, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and National Public Radio (NPR).
1969: First Broadcast WTIU begins broadcasting on UHF channel 30 for the first time at 5:15pm on March 3. The signal is sent from WTIU’s new broadcast tower on South Sare Road in Bloomington, Indiana. The station primarily broadcasts education programming from National Educational Television (NET), the predecessor of PBS.
wtiu.org / 7
1970: PBS Created PBS begins operations in October 1970, taking over from NET and solidifies public television’s place in the American channel lineup. Today, over 350 PBS member stations broadcast across the United States, including WTIU.
1973: WTIU Wins Major Award WTIU wins a Peabody Award for the television production of the opera Myshkin, written by IU Jacobs School of Music Professor John Eaton. The George Foster Peabody Award recognizes distinguished and meritorious public service by radio and television stations, networks, production organizations and individuals. Reflecting excellence in quality rather than popularity or commercial success, the Peabody is the industry’s most competitive honor.
1980: WTIU Mobile Truck WTIU acquires its first mobile color broadcasting truck, allowing live coverage of various sporting and community events, including the Monroe County Fair and numerous IU men’s soccer games from Armstrong Stadium, greatly raising WTIU’s profile in the community.
1999: The Friday Zone The Friday Zone, a WTIU-produced weekly children’s series, premieres in October 1999, with original creator and producer Holly Gregory.
8 / wtiu.org
2002: Columbus, Indiana: Different by Design Columbus, Indiana: Different by Design, highlighting the beautiful architecture of the south-central Indiana city, makes its premiere in March 2002. Six of its buildings, built between 1942 and 1965, are national historic landmarks of Modern architecture.
2009: High-Definition Broadcasting WTIU begins broadcasting in ATSC high-definition and shuts down NTSC analog transmission after 40 years.
2013: Indiana Newsdesk Indiana Newsdesk, a weekly news program from the WFIU/ WTIU news team debuts in September 2013. The program presents the week’s top headlines and stories on the environment, the economy, politics, and education impacting our society, our state, and our region.
2017: PBS Kids Channel WTIU adds a new 24-7 PBS Kids channel, bringing its broadcast channel lineup to five: WTIU HD, TIU World, TIU Create, TIU Echo, and TIU Kids.

Eight Little Words Eight little words: “Please remember WTIU in your will or trust.” Simple words that could make a huge difference to us. Every day, nonprofit organizations go to the stream of donations to ask for support. How can WTIU build its own stream in the world of financial support that will enable us to do more—and to put at least a little less daily fundraising pressure on ourselves and on our audience? “Please remember us in your will and trusts.” Help ensure the viability of WTIU. Suggested wording for including WTIU in your estate plan is below:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Indiana University Foundation, a nonprofit Indiana corporation with principal offices in Bloomington, Indiana, the sum of $___ (or ___% of my estate) to be utilized for the benefit of WTIU Public Television from Indiana University (or, state a specific purpose).” For more information, visit our website: https://indianapublicmedia.org/support/wills-bequests.

Bob Hammel & Bloomington: A 50-Year Love Affair Monday, March 4 at 8pm Also on Sports writer Bob Hammel had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, with the skills to take advantage of his good fortune. And he couldn’t have picked a better place to be—professionally and personally— than Bloomington, Indiana. Bob Hammel & Bloomington: A 50-Year Love Affair explores how a city, a newspaper, and history intersected to propel Hammel from small-town reporter to a nationally-celebrated figure in the world of
sports. Hammel first arrived in Bloomington to study journalism at Indiana University, but left after his freshman year in 1954 to pursue an opportunity as a sports reporter for his hometown paper, the Herald-Press in Huntington, Indiana. He displayed a keen eye for judging talent in his first column on sportscaster and fellow Hoosier Chris Schenkel, who he predicted would be a rising star.
As the documentary reveals, Hammel himself was also a rising star in the world of sports journalism. Twelve years after leaving Bloomington, he would return to become the sports editor of the Herald-Times. During his
long and distinguished career with the paper, he would cover the 1968 Rose Bowl, the 1972 Munich Olympics, IU’s perfect basketball season in 1976 and subsequent national championships in 1981 and 1987, and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta—
his final assignment before retiring. The people and events Hammel covered would change his life, bring him to national prominence, and enable him to become one of the most effective voices ever in promoting Bloomington to the world. Hammel’s work gave him the opportunity to meet and develop friendships with many national figures, including Mark Spitz, Lee Hamilton, Gayle Cook, Michael Koryta, Angelo Pizzo, Quinn Buckner, and Bob Knight, who are all interviewed on the program.
