This Month’s Highlights Plants Behaving Badly

Wednesdays, May 3 and 10 at 10pm This two-part series shows how carnivorous plants use deceit and treachery to survive. Murder & Mayhem (5/3) looks at the extraordinary behavior of carnivorous plants, a feature of many science-fiction movies. Sex & Lies (5/10) revels in the beauty of orchids while examining their exotic flowers, which are shaped for one purpose—to seduce pollinators. David Attenborough narrates.

American Epic

Tuesdays, May 16 to 30 at 9pm In the 1920s, record company scouts traveled across America with recorders for the first time, capturing the raw expression of an emerging culture. This threepart series follows the scouts’ trail, rediscovering the families whose music led to the development of blues, country, gospel, Hawaiian, Cajun, and folk. Includes exclusive interviews with the last living witnesses to that era.

Food – Delicious Science

Wednesdays, May 17 to 31 at 10pm Examines the physics, chemistry, and biology that lie hidden in every bite of food we eat. New imaging techniques reveal the inner world of food and why a variety of foods have ended up in our diet. The science is set against sumptuous locations around the world. Michael Mosley (in photo, eating brain salad) and James Wong host.

Dark Angel on MASTERPIECE Sunday, May 21 at 9pm

Dispensing death from the spout of a warm teapot, Mary Ann Cotton (Joanne Froggatt of Downton Abbey) was Britain’s first female serial killer. The film dramatizes the events that drew a troubled woman ever deeper into a series of casual murders, while her loved ones and friends, who were also her victims, never suspected a thing.

Independent Lens – Farmer/Veteran Monday, May 29 at 10pm

Combat veteran Alex Sutton starts a farm to cultivate a healthy life, but he cannot shake the lingering traumas of war. As he and his wife nervously anticipate the birth of their first child, he oscillates between states of heightened awareness and “feeling zombified” from the cocktail of prescription meds meant to keep him stable.

Get an in-depth look at the water disaster in Flint, Michigan, which brought to light a disturbing truth about the vulnerabilities of water systems across the country. Make your voice heard on the value of public media Federal funding for public media is under attack. The White House budget proposal would eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. We need your help to keep that federal funding intact. We know that there is strong bipartisan support for public broadcasting in Congress and across the country. But we can’t take that support for granted. Without it, WFIU and WTIU would lose about 15% of our funding. This would have a devastating effect on the programs and services that our viewers and listeners have come to expect. Public media is one of America’s best investments at about $1.35 per citizen each year—a drop in the bucket of the federal budget. Please help ensure that public media receives the critical investments needed to continue to deliver on our important mission. • Go to Protect My Public Media (protectmypublicmedia.org) and sign the petition to help save local stations. • Contact your senators and member of Congress directly. Go to govtrack.us and enter your address for contact information. Thank you, Perry Metz General Manager WFIU and WTIU

Highlights StoryCorps is coming to town StoryCorps, the nonprofit organization that records, preserves, and shares American stories, is coming to south-central Indiana.

The StoryCorps mobile recording studio will be in Bloomington from May 25 to June 23, at a location to be determined. (Listen for announcements on air and at wfiu.org.) StoryCorps gives people of all backgrounds, usually two at a time, the opportunity to record meaningful conversations, and archives the recordings at the Library of Congress. Recording sessions last about 45 minutes, and are later edited. Selected stories will appear on WFIU and may later air nationally on Morning Edition. Sign up for a recording session at storycorps.org/ reservations or by calling 1-800-850-4406.

Victorian Slum House Tuesdays, May 2 to 30 at 8pm Travel back to the British slums of the late 19th century, where a group of modern day families, couples, and individuals recreate life in London’s East End. Over five episodes the participants experience firsthand the harsh living and working conditions endured by the millions of urban poor in Victorian Britain. The 1860s (5/2) Follow participants as they move into an 1860s tenement made up of sparse rooms, a shared water pump, and outdoor privies. They seek to make a living by matchbox making, wood turning, and the rag trade—work once done by their impoverished forebears. The 1870s (5/9) Witness a dire economic depression heightened by the arrival of Irish migrants seeking work. The slum dwellers toil to fulfill clothing orders and make artificial flowers for factories. Some won’t be able to settle their debts. The 1880s (5/16) Despite high unemployment and intolerable conditions, people flock to

London, desperate for work. When curious upperclass visitors are permitted to visit the slum as tourists, the participants realize how precarious their situation truly is. The 1890s (5/23) Enter the 1890s, when mass manufacturing and social reform offer a ray of hope for some of the residents. Others are plagued by a water shortage that dashes hopes for a promising laundry business. The 1900s (5/30) Observe the social changes the slum dwellers face as they move into the 20th century. A few families prosper, but others continue to face poverty. See what steps are finally taken to alleviate the plight of the poor.
