This Month’s Highlights Richard Linklater: American Masters Friday, September 1 at 9pm

This encore broadcast, airing on the tenth anniversary of Luciano Pavarotti’s death in 2007, includes arias from Italian operas; Neapolitan songs in arrangements by Henry Mancini; and popular duets with Bono, Sting, Vanessa Williams, and Eric Clapton.

American Masters: Tyrus Friday, September 8 at 9pm

Tyrus Wong was America’s oldest living Chinese American artist. His melding of Chinese influences with contemporary Western art is found in everything from Disney animation (Bambi) to California dinnerware and Depression-era WPA paintings. This film shows how he overcame a life of poverty and racism to become a painter who once exhibited with Picasso and Matisse. (r 9/9, 9/11)

Third Rail with OZY Fridays at 8:30pm beginning September 8 Carlos Watson, Emmy Award-winning journalist and editor in chief of OZY.com, hosts this new, crossplatform debate program. Expert and celebrity guests debate it in the studio, moderated by Watson, and are informed by the weeklong social media conversation leading up to it. (r 9/9 and 9/16 2am; 9/23, 9/30 1:30am)

My Vietnam, Your Iraq

The Vietnam War

September 17 to September 21 at 8pm September 24 to September 28 at 8pm This new, 10-part, 18-hour PBS documentary directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tells the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The series features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides.

Thursday, September 14 at 9:30pm The Vietnam War polarized the United States in the 1960s; decades later, U.S. involvement in Iraq generated its own discord. My Vietnam Your Iraq connects these two wars by focusing on the stories of eight Vietnam veterans whose children have served in Iraq. (repeats 9/17 6pm)

WTIU Vietnam Veterans Preview Event WTIU is hosting a special Vietnam Veterans Preview on Saturday, September 9 from 2 to 5pm at Bloomington City Hall. Watch a full preview of Just Like Me and a one-hour overview of The Vietnam War. Veterans resource organizations will be present and an Indiana Mobile Veterans Unit will be on site during the Farmers Market and throughout the screenings.
