“I’ve worked in commercial and public radio and have always appreciated the way public radio enables stories to really breathe. I was drawn to this position because of the innovation and journalism that I’ve seen coming from WFYI and IPB. It truly is an honor and privilege to be joining All IN,” Sobh said. Sobh’s storytelling extends outside of public broadcasting and radio. She is the creator of one of the first-ever niche lifestyle blogs focusing on Muslim women and is active in the performing arts world as a writer, actor, singer, and comedian. She recently produced, wrote, and starred in her first one-woman show that sold out its run at Judy’s Beat Lounge at The Second City. Now with Zoom, she can officially say that she’s performed all over the world. “I believe the stories we share show how much more connected we are than we realize. As journalists, we have the ability to give people insight into things they may not know, and at the same time offer them comfort in knowing that they’re not alone,” she said. Airing weekdays at 1 p.m. on WFIU2, All IN connects people—to the latest news and to each other—through deep, thoughtful, lively conversation. The show touches on issues and topics that excite and interest Hoosiers, rooted in the belief that people can bring their passions and differences together in a civil, intelligent, and nonjudgmental environment. WFIU2 is available at 101.9 FM in Bloomington and 100.1 FM in Seymour and can be streamed at wfiu.org.

Earth Eats’ host and producer Kayte Young shares her go-to granola recipe. It’s simple and quick to mix up. Though it takes over an hour to toast in the oven, it is mostly unattended. You can adjust the ingredients to your taste— using the fruit, nuts, and grains of your choice, or adding spices to the mix. Serve it with plain yogurt and a spoonful of jam, or with fresh berries and honey. Wes Montgomery

Kayte’s Granola 8 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup sunflower oil (or another neutral-tasting oil) 2 generous squirts of honey 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup almonds, pecans or other nuts, roughly chopped 3/4 cup dried fruit such as cranberries or currants Spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg (optional) • Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Mix the oats and nuts in a large roasting pan. In a large measuring cup, mix the oil, syrup, honey and salt. Add spices, if using. • Pour the mixture over the oats and nuts, and toss until fully coated. Bake at 250F for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes or so, to make sure it browns all over. • Remove from oven when golden brown, and add the dried fruit while it is still warm. Allow to cool completely before transferring to jars for storage. For more recipes, visit eartheats.org

In 2001 the Smithsonian National Museum of American History designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month, or JAM, “to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz—to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.” We encourage you to tune into our weekday afternoon jazz program Just You & Me to hear a wide variety of new and classic recordings, including each Thursday when host David Brent Johnson celebrates past and presentday Indiana jazz masters, from Hoagy Carmichael and Wes Montgomery to Sara Caswell and Rob Dixon. Our Friday-evening jazz-specialty programs Afterglow and Night Lights offer an ongoing opportunity for jazz appreciation, whether you’re a passionate fan or a casual listener. With its emphasis on vocal jazz, Afterglow spotlights vocalists Anita O’Day and the young Tony Bennett this month, as well as the early, standards-oriented career of eventual soul superstar Marvin Gaye. Other shows feature the songs of “Over the Rainbow” composer Yip Harburg and themes of happiness in popular music. Night Lights, which covers historical jazz themes and artists from the 1930s to the beginning of the 21st century, takes a look this month at the brief but profound musical relationship between Miles Davis and pianist Bill Evans, which resulted in the jazz masterpiece Kind of Blue. You can also hear programs about Duke Ellington’s fruitful final years, the early jazz exploits of composer and pianist Andre Previn, and another “the-year-in-jazz” program that focuses this time on 1964, when Lee Morgan scored a hit with “The Sidewinder,” and the American breakthrough of the Beatles set off shock waves throughout the jazz world.

This month on Hemingway

Monday–Wednesday, April 5–7 at 8pm Ernest Hemingway, the iconic literary figure considered one of the greatest American writers and among the first to live and work at the treacherous nexus of art and celebrity, is the subject of a new three-part, six-hour documentary series directed by award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Hemingway—written by Geoffrey C. Ward and produced by Sarah Botstein—interweaves a close study of the biographical events of the author’s life with excerpts from his fiction, non-fiction, and short stories, informed by interviews with celebrated writers, scholars, and Hemingway’s son, Patrick. The filmmakers explore the painstaking process through which Hemingway created some of the most important works of fiction in American letters, including novels The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea; short stories “Hills Like White Elephants,” “The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” “Up in Michigan,” “Indian Camp,” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro;” as well as the nonfiction works Death in the Afternoon and A Moveable Feast. Narrated by Peter Coyote, the series features an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced by Jeff Daniels), his friends, and family vividly to life. Through letters to and from his four wives—voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker, and Patricia Clarkson—the film reveals Hemingway at his most romantic and his most vulnerable, grappling at times with insecurity, anxiety, and existential loneliness.

Each episode, through fact and fiction, examines the circumstances surrounding an actual Ernie Pyle column from this pre-WWII era. The podcasts are based on recently discovered wire recordings in the archives of the Smithsonian Institute that give listeners a view into the Pyles’ everyday lives on the road and what led to the creation of the column. Each episode ends with a reading of Pyle’s actual column.

Produced by Brainard and co-executive producer Russell McGee, The Ernie Pyle Experiment! chronicles Ernie Pyle’s pre-war work as a traveling columnist for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper syndicate. Ernie and his wife, Jerry, traveled America from 1935–1942, in quest of interesting stories for his column “The Hoosier Vagabond.” The Ernie Pyle Experiment! explores how it was done.
