IU Summer Theatre is partnering with WFIU to present two fully produced radio plays this month. Waycross, written by Jayne Deely and directed by Jenny McKnight, airs Saturday, July 17 at 5 p.m. on WFIU2 and Sunday, July 18 at 6 p.m. on WFIU. Originally developed and produced for the IU Theatre & Dance 2021 At First Sight Festival of New Plays, Waycross is about finding heroes y Ja where you least expect them. In this play, CIA asset Lee is assigned to the nation’s riskiest and most vital missions. Her arch-enemy Nadia Rachnamninov is close on Lee’s tail through every mission from Mauritius to Minsk. At this point, Nadia is the closest thing Lee has to a friend, unless you count CIA Director Skybell, who seems to live in Lee’s earpiece. When Lee finds herself charged with the task of infiltrating a community theatre in Georgia undercover as something called a dramaturg, she has never been more in over her head. The clock’s ticking, every second bringing the town closer to potential destruction, and opening night.

The second radio play, Twisted Tales of Poe, airs Saturday, July 24 at 5 p.m. on WFIU2 and Sunday, July 25 at 6 p.m. on WFIU. Based on four works by Edgar Allan Poe, the prisoners of Leverett Street Jail, Death Warrant Division, await their fates as the doomed tell their stories. A man brought to justice in “The Black Cat,” a sampling of “The Cask of Amontillado,” what “The Tell-Tale Heart” could reveal, and a soul visited by guilt in “The Raven.” These chilling stories converge into an evening’s sampling of Poe, one of America’s most enduring and misunderstood literary giants. This broadcast will also feature conversations and materials from the IU Lilly Library Edgar Allan Poe collection. Written by Philip Grecian and directed by Richard Roland, Twisted Tales of Poe is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company, Inc., of Woodstock, Illinois.

Black beans, or Frijoles Negros is a dish found throughout Latin America, with variations on seasonings and preparations from Cuba to Mexico. You can use canned beans, and just season them and serve over rice, but cooking them from dry is easy enough, and the texture and flavor is superior to canned. Consider trying this method for cooking your beans from Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen: cover dry beans with about 3 inches of water in a crockpot and cook on high for around 3 hours.

EarthEats.org

Simple Black Beans 1 pound dry black beans 2 whole bay leaves 1 teaspoon salt 1 onion, chopped Dried, whole chili of your choice (optional) 1 tablespoon olive oil (or any cooking oil)

2-4 cloves of fresh garlic, finely chopped or pressed 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon (or more) salt 1-2 fresh chilies, finely chopped (as mild or as hot as you wish) 12 oz whole canned tomatoes

Toppings: Grated cheese, shredded lettuce or spinach, salsa, hot sauce, avocado, cilantro, fresh lime wedge, and sour cream. Place the dry beans in a crockpot and cover with 3 inches of water. Add the chopped onion, bay leaves, salt, and dried chili. Cover and cook on high for around 3 hours (check on them after a couple of hours to make sure they don't get too mushy). Once they are cooked, but still holding their shape, remove from heat and drain most of the excess water from the beans. Heat the oil in a large pot on the stove. Add garlic, chilies, salt, and spices— sauté until fragrant. Add the tomatoes and break them up in the pan with a wooden spoon. Simmer for about a minute. Add the beans. Bring to a boil then reduce heat, cover (with lid slightly ajar), and cook for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the rice (or grain of your choice). Taste the beans, add salt and seasoning as desired, remove bay leaves and whole dried chili (if using). Serve over rice with preferred toppings.

Jazz in July news! The popular, longrunning summer concert series, now hosted by WFIU and the IU Jacobs School of Music jazz studies program, was canceled last year because of the pandemic, and continuing crowdsize restrictions have made planning a return for 2021 unfeasible. In its place, we will be presenting Swing in September this autumn, with performances taking place every Friday evening at the Conrad Prebys Amphitheater on the IU campus. Stay tuned for this year’s artist lineup! We are optimistic that we’ll be able to resume the regular Jazz in July series in 2022. On the WFIU airwaves, tune into Afterglow every Friday evening at 8 for programs this month that celebrate summer (airing the Friday before the 4th of July—what better way to start the holiday weekend?), “The Great French Songbook” in honor of Bastille Day, and a survey of recent releases by vocalists such as Veronica Swift and IU adjunct faculty member Sachal Vasandani. Afterglow winds up the month on July 30 with “Satchmo and Friends,” featuring Louis Armstrong’s duets with Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, and other notable singers. Night Lights, our Friday-evening historical jazz show that follows Afterglow, celebrates the July centennials of guitarist Mary Osborne, who helped blaze a trail for women instrumentalists in jazz, and pianist and jazz educator Billy Taylor. You can hear those artists as well as new releases, live recordings, and Indiana jazz musicians weekday afternoons from 3 to 5 on Just You & Me.

Featuring 13 original films made by filmmakers working across genres, The Latino Experience is a new three-part anthology series that explores a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and styles to highlight the rich diversity of the Latino/a/x community across the United States and Puerto Rico. From dramas to documentaries, comedies to magical realism, The Latino Experience showcases an impressive lineup of creative talent, both in front of and behind the camera. “We are excited to highlight and share The Latino Experience, a compilation of shorts that showcase the wideranging talent, diversity and complexity within the Latinx community in the US and abroad,” said Wendy Llinas, Senior Director, Programming & Development, PBS. “These narrative and scripted shorts reflect the joy, creativity, courage, humor, pain and resilience in our communities with top-notch authentic storytelling that reflects the many lived experiences of Latinos/as/x at this moment in history.” Films included in The Latino Experience were chosen by a panel of experienced filmmakers from entries received by PBS following a call for submissions in August 2020. The selected films in the series include “Death and Deathability: A Period Piece,” “Folk Frontera,” “The Blue Cape,” “La Tienda,” “Dear Queer Dancer,” “Un Pequeño Corte,” “Body and Spirit in Times of Pandemic,” “Our Lady Lupe,” “Pasos de Valor,” “Mi Fango, Mi Cerro,” “The Daily War,” “Cuban American Gothic,” and “Noche Buena.”

This fund helps sustain news programs such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and PBS NewsHour, programs that probe issues without hype or bias, on our airwaves. In addition to national news shows, the stations air a variety of regular regional news and public affairs programs, including Noon Edition on WFIU and Indiana Newsdesk on WTIU.

WFIU and WTIU are one of the few—and sometimes the only—sources of local news coverage for listeners and viewers in the south central Indiana region. Dollars raised from the endowment will help Radio-TV purchase, expand, and produce the news programming you can only hear and see on WFIU and WTIU, keeping our reporters and journalists free from commercials pressures—free to do their best work. Learn more about how you can contribute to the news endowment at wfiu.org/support.

A Martínez Joins NPR as Host of ‘Morning Edition’ and ‘Up First’ A Martínez has been appointed host of NPR’s Morning Edition and Up First, joining Rachel Martin, Noel King, and Steve Inskeep in the hosting lineup. He starts at NPR on July 6.

rtín Ma A

“We are delighted to have A join the Morning Edition team, anchoring from NPR West. He brings a remarkable record of journalism and empathy that allows him to truly connect with audiences and stories,” said Sarah Gilbert, NPR’s Vice President for News Programming. “He brings intelligence, a sense of humor, and a deep curiosity that will fit right in with the show’s commitment to telling distinctive stories that make a difference to our understanding of the world.”

A has been the host of Take Two at KPCC in Los Angeles since 2012. During his tenure, Take Two has created important forums on the air and through live events that have elevated the voices and perspectives of Angelenos. The program has also provided nuanced coverage of the region’s challenges including homelessness, climate change, and systemic disparities in health and education. He has also been a familiar voice to sports-talk radio listeners in Los Angeles as host of 710 KSPN’s In the Zone.

In reflecting on the new role, A notes, “Nine years ago, I had never listened to public radio. I was about to start a new path that would change my career, and in a deeper way, my perspective on life. The time I’ve spent at KPCC proves that public radio journalism can be accessible, relatable, and understandable to anyone, regardless of their background or educational pedigree. I’m excited to bring every experience I’ve had along the way to NPR and to represent Los Angeles and California the best way I can.”
