Become a Part of American History with StoryCorps Connect Since 2003, StoryCorps has given over 600,000 people of all backgrounds and beliefs the chance to record interviews about their lives and preserve them in the Library of Congress. Up until now, StoryCorps interviews have been recorded face-to-face. But the largest global health crisis in a century is changing the way we live and interact with our friends, neighbors, and families. StoryCorps wants to help you to connect and share stories with loved ones at this unprecedented time. With a fierce determination to honor the wisdom of older generations and to leave a legacy for younger generations, StoryCorps has created a new platform called StoryCorps Connect—a first-of-its-kind technology that enables people across the country to take part in the magic of a StoryCorps interview with a loved one, but while doing it remotely. Through StoryCorps Connect, people can interview one another through a computer or a mobile device and instantly share the recording with the StoryCorps’ Online Archive and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Through this new platform, people can share a meaningful conversation with each other, asking important questions, and listening carefully to their answers.

U nderwriting: For information on how your business can underwrite particular programs on WFIU, call (800) 662-3311.

StoryCorps Connect was developed in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This platform will help connect generations, preserve the wisdom of humanity, and offer a source of comfort and meaning to elders who may feel isolated and alone. “Social distancing” is the exact opposite of the StoryCorps ethos, which strives to bring people together and acknowledge and celebrate our common humanity. At this time of physical separation, the StoryCorps interview is a more essential tool than ever before for bringing us together.

V olunteers: Information about volunteer opportunities is available at (812) 855-1357, or by sending an email to wfiu@indiana.edu.

So this may not be our standard summer, right? Still, you can count on WFIU to always deliver the news and cultural programming, both over the airwaves and online, that we’ve provided for the past 70 years. That applies to our jazz programming as well, beginning with Just You and Me Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Host David Brent Johnson will be rolling out a new blog component for the program this month that will offer updates about upcoming shows and news about jazz on both a local and national level at wfiu.org/justyouandme. This month on Afterglow, our Fridayevening vocal jazz program, host Mark Chilla highlights some of the singers featured with Duke Ellington’s big band, along with shows highlighting Kay Starr in the 1940s and Peggy Lee in the 1960s, plus a roundup of recent vocal-jazz releases from Kurt Elling, Kandace Springs, James Taylor, Becca Stevens, and others. Our historical-jazz program Night Lights follows at 9 with programs devoted to a new box set of bandleader Woody Herman’s music from the 1940s and early ’50s, a tribute to the African-American Juneteenth holiday, and a centennial salute to drummer Shelly Manne and his diverse recordings of the 1950s. Missed a show you wanted to hear? Visit wfiu.org/afterglow and wfiu.org/nightlights. June 2020 / Page 3

The Four “P’s” of Planning for the Future The summer may be an ideal time to do some estate planning or to review your will. Over half of all Americans who pass away each year do not have a valid will. The result of having NO will may be confusion for the family and unnecessary fees, taxes, and tribulation. So many good things can result from the estate planning process—not the least of which is your own peace of mind. If you think about it, no matter what your net worth, we all have “estates” of sorts— bank accounts, prized possessions, life insurance policies, retirement plans—items that sometimes add up to more than you expect!

by Pulitzer Prize- and 10-time Tonywinning producer Daryl Roth, Gloria: A Life brings to life a richly detailed account of one of the most inspiring and remarkable women of our time.

Starring Academy, Emmy, and Golden Globe Award winner Christine Lahti as Steinem, the play features an all-women cast playing both male and female roles. Act one focuses on Steinem’s life and path to activism. Act two consists of a “talking circle” with the audience to discuss the play’s themes, moderated by Gloria Steinem herself. Written by Tony Award nominee Emily Mann, directed for the stage by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, and produced Here is an easy way to start using the following 4 P’s as a simple planning guide: 1. PEOPLE—Who are the people in your life who depend on you or who you might want to remember in your will? Make a list of your spouse, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and loved ones that you wish to include. 2. PROSPERITY—What are the various properties you own, that together make up your “estate”? Make a list of real estate, insurance, retirement annuities, mortgages, automobiles, jewelry, and collectibles that you own. Make a note of the original cost of each, and your best “guesstimate” of its current value. If needed, list any income or debt that may be attached—such as remaining car or mortgage payments.

Great Performances – Gloria: A Life is part of a summer-long PBS celebration of female trailblazers in honor of the women’s vote centennial, featuring multiplatform content commemorating U.S. women’s suffrage, the feminist movement, and modern-day changemakers.

3. PLANS—How would you like to match your “properties” to the people you listed in Step 1? Include any charities and nonprofits you wish to remember. 4. PLANNERS—Who are the people you will need to talk to finalize your plan, to make it “legal”? List the name and phone number of those you need to make an appointment with, such as your attorney, insurance agent, broker, or financial planner. Once you have put your 4 P’s together, consider the fifth and most essential step: 5. PHOLLOW-THROUGH!—A sketch on paper isn’t enough! Make those calls! Putting your plan into action should add to your peace of mind. For more information, contact your advisor or visit wfiu.org/support.

This American Life Wins Pulitzer Prize Congratulations to This American Life for winning the very first Pulitzer Prize ever awarded to audio journalism for “revelatory, intimate journalism that illuminates the personal impact of the Trump administration’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy.” The winning episode was “The Out Crowd,” which aired last November.

Jenn White Named New Host of 1A

“When we started putting it together, we knew that elements of the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy had been covered by the press. But a lot of that coverage had come out in drips and drops, as the wonky specifics of the policy changed,” said Ira Glass, host and executive producer of This American Life. “Most listeners…had not put together what the policies really meant: tens of thousands of asylum seekers stranded on the other side of the border in shelters, on the streets, and in makeshift encampments.” This American Life airs Sundays at 10 a.m. on WFIU. You can listen to the Pulitzer Prize winning episode at thisamericanlife.org/688/the-out-crowd.

Chicago radio and podcast talent Jenn White has been selected as the new host of the nationally syndicated NPR show 1A. No stranger to public media, White comes to 1A from WBEZ Chicago, where she hosted the station’s midday talk program Reset with Jenn White. She also hosted WBEZ’s critically acclaimed podcasts Making Oprah and Making Obama. Her first day on 1A is July 6.

“I am excited to build on my love of the news by joining 1A as host, to moderate conversations around the most important issues of our time,” said Jenn White. “1A is a show by, and for our listeners, and I can’t wait to talk to them about the most salient topics facing our country, to find solutions and hold those in power accountable.” As the show’s new national host, White will moderate the daily dialogue and champion Americans’ right to speak freely. White takes over from Joshua Johnson, who stepped down in December of 2019 to join MSNBC as a television anchor. 1A airs weekdays at 10 a.m. on WFIU2.
