From Radio Show to Book: A Moment of Science Has its Big Moment For more than 30 years, A Moment of Science has been answering questions about the world through a scientific perspective— anything from “Why does it hurt to hit our funny bone?” to “Can you really learn while you are asleep?” Now this radio show and podcast is the basis for a new book from A Moment of Science host and producer Don Glass. How the World Looks to a Bee and Other Moments of Science will be published by Indiana University Press on March 3. The book is a compilation of scripts from A Moment of Science, which Glass edited and adapted. “In the pieces that needed to be edited, I tried hard to retain the original writers’ tone and mood,” Glass said, noting that many of the scripts were a dialogue between two people, a format which he converted from a dialogue to prose format. Glass’s love of science started long before he began working on A Moment of Science and this new book. “I have had a lay person’s interest in science since I was a kid,” Glass said. “Although I did not pursue a career in science—instead I went with music and radio, two of my other passions when I was young. How things work and the ways of the natural world have fascinated me.” How the World Looks to a Bee and Other Moments of Science answers science questions that arise on a daily basis. Despite the subject matter, no background in science is necessary to understand and enjoy the queries and explanations explored in the book. Readers of all ages can satisfy their curiosity about the science of everyday life— even if they only a moment to spare. Like listeners of A Moment of Science, Glass hopes that readers are entertained and informed by How the World Looks to a Bee and Other Moments of Science. “I’d like for them to say, ‘Wow, that’s neat. I did not know that,’” Glass said. How the World Looks to a Bee and Other Moments of Science will be available wherever books are sold. Or, you can support WFIU during this month’s membership campaign and select the book as your thank-you gift!

Jazz Notes Hear ye, hear ye, o jazz fans and listeners to WFIU! Our spring fund drive runs from March 24-30 this month, and we’ll be offering some great jazz thank-you gifts, including Harry Connick Jr.’s new tribute to the songs of Indiana composer Cole Porter, a newly-released collection of singer Ella Fitzgerald’s duets with pianists, and the soundtrack to the new Miles Davis PBS documentary Birth of the Cool. We’ll

be airing plenty of music amid all of our high-spirited entreaties for you to renew or enhance your membership—or to become a member for the first time! Help sustain WFIU’s long-running commitment to jazz programming. March is also Women’s History Month, and jazz educator Monika Herzig will stop by our weekday afternoon program Just You And Me on Thursday, March 5 for her annual co-DJ stint, playing some of her favorite recordings by women jazz artists and keeping us up to date on her Jazz Girls educational activities. Our Friday night program Afterglow salutes the month’s theme as well with shows about feminist anthems from the Great American Songbook, songwriter Irene Higginbotham, and the lesser-known jazz-soul singers Pat Thomas and Gloria Smyth. Night Lights, which follows Afterglow at 9 on Friday evenings, also offers programs this month about women jazz artists of the 1970s and the lateperiod recordings of singer Billie Holiday, plus a show devoted to jazz recordings that were jukebox hits.

Pyle is best remembered for his firsthand reports from the foxholes alongside American troops during World War II. He is also celebrated for his writings as he traveled across the US during the lean years of the Great Depression, revealing the trials and triumphs of hundreds of common Americans. This documentary chronicles not only the bloody battles in Europe and Japan, but also the internal battles Pyle constantly faced with alcoholism, depression, and a troubled marriage. The program is narrated by Emmy awardwinning journalist and former CBS News anchor Dan Rather. Actor Jonathan Banks— from TV series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul—gives voice to Ernie Pyle and his
most acclaimed writings and personal correspondence to his closest friends and family. The film also includes notable interviews with the late Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney, as well as a number of World War II veterans, contemporary journalists, and historians. Ernie Pyle: Life in the Trenches reveals that through two of the darkest chapters in America’s history, the voice of Ernie Pyle became the voice of the American people—a voice of promise, grit, and determination. in percentages. In the case of retirement plan assets, ask your retirement plan administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form. Contact your insurance company to ask how you can change beneficiaries in your life insurance policy.
If you give annually and want to continue your giving after your lifetime, these are two smart and easy ways to make a charitable gift without affecting your income. And, you still have the flexibility to change your mind in case your circumstances change.
By putting aside a percentage of your assets—from 1 to 100 percent—you can leave a legacy with WFIU, while making sure you and your family have the security they may need in the future.
For more information on how to support WFIU into the future, go to wfiu.org/ support/gifts-of-retirement-plan-assets.php and look at the many options.
Watch Out! If your children or nieces and nephews are the beneficiaries of your retirement plan assets, federal income taxes may erode the amount they receive. It is often best to use these assets for charitable giving and give people other types of assets.

Support WFIU’s Spring Membership Campaign This world is diverse – we come from all sorts of backgrounds, belief systems, ethnicities. And, in this part of the world these days, it certainly can feel as if our social and political climate is divisive. But, in the broad community that is public radio, a number of things unite us. We crave journalism that is informative, researched, fact-based, independent, and reliable, and that makes our democracy stronger. And, when we need a break from the news, we long for music that is y ile by turns stimulating and soothing. As a nB Joh we listen, we seek to understand, and to never stop learning. Public radio is a voice of civility, and one of our lifelines to civilization. Our station is here to connect Indiana to the world – and more than 4,000 listeners to WFIU and WFIU2, from French Lick to Kokomo, from Terre Haute to Seymour, have responded in kind by choosing to become listener-members. With other sources of support in peril, yours is as important
as ever. Have you renewed your membership this year? If you gave in the fall – or if you’re a sustaining member – then would you consider giving a bit extra this spring? Have you not contributed in a couple of years, or perhaps ever? Our onair membership campaign, running from March 24 through 30, is a perfect time to step up. Our website, WFIU.org, makes it especially easy for you to give. I’m proud to be a sustaining member of WFIU. Let’s stay tuned in together, knowing we helped make possible another year of essential radio that improves the quality of life across the region.
