Support our March fund drive

The society we live in seems to offer endless diversity. Take a walk downtown, and you’ll encounter folks who represent all sorts of backgrounds and creeds. And we don’t have to travel far, over land or online, to sense that our social and political fabric has frayed.

But in the broad community that is public radio, we’re connected by a number of important things.

We want to be informed. We long for journalism that is researched and reliable—that lets us stand with the facts, and that makes our democracy stronger.

And we want to be soothed. When we need a break from the active, unpredictable news landscape, we turn to music that will weather fleeting trends and stand the test of time. Music that offers a deep-down assurance that our recent troubles are not all we have and will pass.

No matter when we listen, we seek to understand, to feel what is true, and to never stop learning.

Public radio is a voice of civility, and one of our lifelines to civilization. No matter how distant we may feel—or be—from one another, our station is here to connect Indiana to the world.

More than 4,000 listeners to WFIU and WFIU2, from French Lick to Kokomo, from Terre Haute to Greensburg, have responded in kind by choosing to become listener-members.

With other sources of support less certain than before, yours is at least as important as ever.

If you’re an annual member, then have you renewed this year? If you gave in the fall—or if you’re a sustaining member—then would you consider giving a bit extra this spring? Have you not contributed in a couple of years, or perhaps ever?

Our on-air membership campaign is slated to last a week, from March 22 through 28. It’s one of a very few times each year that we take time out on air to make the case that listener investment in public radio is critical.

This is a perfect time to lend your support, once again or for the first time. Listener support keeps WFIU independent and strong, positioned to deliver another year of the high-quality programming you desire.

Questions or Comments?

Programming, Policies, or this Guide: If you have any questions about something you heard on the radio, station policies or this programming guide, e-mail us at wfiu@indiana.edu.

Listener Response: You can e-mail us at wfiu@indiana.edu, call us at (812) 855-1357, or mail us a letter addressed to: WFIU, Radio/TV Center, 1229 East 7th Street, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-5501

Membership: WFIU appreciates and depends on our members. The membership staff is on hand Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to answer questions. Want to begin or renew your membership? Changing addresses? Haven’t received the thank-you gift you requested? Questions about the MemberCard? Want to send a complimentary copy of Directions in Sound to a friend? Call (812) 855-6114 or toll free at (800) 662-3311.

Underwriting: For information on how your business can underwrite particular programs on WFIU, call (800) 662-3311.

Volunteers: Information about volunteer opportunities is available at (812) 855-1357, or by sending an email to wfiu@indiana.edu.

WFIU Sustainers: To start a sustaining membership or to replace the credit or debit card information you’re using for your ongoing monthly donation, please call (800) 662-3311.

Nowhere else does such a partnership exist between an enlightened community and the necessary public service WFIU provides.

I’m proud to be a sustaining member of WFIU. You and I are the “public” in “public radio.” It is your contribution to our station that will sustain us. It will ensure we can provide news, information, music, and entertainment for free, without a subscription, to everyone in our community who cares to listen. Let’s stay tuned in together, knowing that, for another year, we helped everyone learn something new every day.

This month marks the centennial of Indiana jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery, born in Indianapolis on March 6, 1923. Montgomery was one of the 20th century’s most influential and popular musicians on his instrument, and he’s the subject of a new documentary, Wes Bound, that’s airing on WTIU this month on March 5 at 1:30 p.m. and March 6 at 8 p.m. (And stick around for the one-hour tribute concert that follows, featuring guitarist Dave Stryker and an IU jazz ensemble with strings led by Brent Wallarab.)

We’ll be celebrating Montgomery’s legacy as well on our weekday afternoon jazz program Just You & Me, along with two Night Lights programs, “From Naptown to Paris: Wes Montgomery Live,” and “When Wes Montgomery Met…” The latter will air on Friday, March 24 in the midst of our spring fund drive, for which we’ll be offering two thank-you gifts that are new releases from Indiana jazz artists: Grammy-nominated violinist Sara Caswell’s The Way to You and Monika Herzig and Janiece Jaffe’s tribute to Joni Mitchell, Both Sides of Joni

Speaking of Joni Mitchell, our Friday evening vocal-jazz show Afterglow kicks off Women’s History Month on March 3 with a Mitchell salute featuring her songs performed by jazz singers such as Dianne Reeves. Other Afterglow programs for Women’s History Month cover Ella Fitzgerald’s Decca years, Billie Holiday’s 1940s records, and the career of singer Carole Sloane, who passed away in January at 85.

Finally, tune into Just You & Me on Thursday, March 30 to hear trumpeter Kyle Quass and writer and professor Joan Hawkins talk about their recent and upcoming jazz-andspoken-word collaborations.

1,000th episode of ‘Focus on Flowers’ airs this month

Focus on Flowers reaches a milestone this month when its 1,000th episode airs on March 30!

The program debuted on March 12, 2004, and is hosted by Master Gardener Moya Andrews, who has been with the show since its beginning. For the past 1,000 episodes, Andrews has worked alongside Michael Paskash, who has engineered every episode, and LuAnn Johnson, whose job transitioned from a supportive role in the production of Focus on Flowers to being the show’s producer.

Every week on Focus on Flowers, Andrews shares gardening tips and her fervor for the aesthetic of gardens, on occasion even considering gardening as a metaphor for certain aspects of life.

Johnson considers Andrews’ gardening knowledge and experience the driving force behind the show. Over the past two decades, she has learned a great deal from Andrews, not only about gardening but also about how to live well.

“I love that Moya imparts her wisdom through stories about her personal experiences,” said Johnson.

This month’s Focus on Flowers shows will cover controlling growth (March 2), disguising bulb foliage (March 9), roses (March 16), and 18th-century gardens (March 23). And finally, for the 1,000th episode on March 30, Andrews will discuss her own garden.

Focus on Flowers airs Thursdays and Fridays at 3:01 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 6:55 a.m. on WFIU. The program is also available wherever you get your podcasts. Learn more at wfiu.org/focusonflowers
