Jazz Notes Dear listeners, it’s been a strange and difficult time for everyone. I hope that you’ve been weathering it as well as possible in whatever challenging set of circumstances you’ve found
Duke Ellington
yourselves. I’ve found myself listening quite a lot to big-band broadcasts from the World War II years, another time when daily life in the United States was affected in many ways by a global cataclysm. In particular, Duke Ellington’s series of Saturday-afternoon programs for the U.S. Treasury Department in 1945, done to help sell war bonds for the government, have been a source of solace as well as aesthetic pleasure. On Friday, May 1 at 9 p.m., Night Lights will focus on the programs Ellington did from April through August of that year, including not just music, but some of the bandleader’s patriotic appeals to listeners to help support the war effort. The show will be archived for online listening afterwards at wfiu.org/nightlights. If you’re in need of standards and American popular song to provide some diversion, look no further than Afterglow, our Friday evening program that immediately precedes Night Lights. This month host Mark Chilla highlights jazz and popular song versions of the Beatles’ music, the songs that Peggy Lee wrote as well as sang, the jazzier side of vocalist and movie star Doris Day’s discography, and women singers such as Julie London who got their start on the Bethlehem label in the 1950s. And Just You and Me continues on weekday afternoons from 3 to 5, bringing you new, classic, live, and Indiana jazz from the studios of WFIU—your public radio station. We’re here for the duration. The warmest regards to you all, wherever you live and listen.

The film series chronicles the contributions, and challenges of Asian Americans, highlighting personal histories and new academic research that casts a fresh lens on U.S. history and the role Asian Americans have played in it. Told through individual lives and personal histories, the documentary examines the impact of this group on the country’s past, present and future. Led by a team of Asian American filmmakers, including Academy Awardnominated series produced Renee Tajima-
Peña (Who Killed Vincent Chin?, No Más Bebés), Asian Americans showcases the significant role of Asian Americans in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s and identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century to modern refugee crises in a globally connected world.
Take Advantage of the New CARES Act Benefits In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was recently signed into law. This relief package includes new benefits for taxpayers making a charitable contribution. Learn how you can take advantage of these opportunities and support WFIU at the same time:
Creation of Universal Charitable Deduction for Non-Itemizers The universal charitable deduction is an “above-the-line deduction” capped at $300 per individual ($600 for a married couple) for outright gifts of cash to qualified Page 10 / May 2020
charities. This new charitable income tax deduction can be claimed by non-itemizers in addition to their standard deduction.
Lifting of Cap on Annual Contributions for Itemizers and Corporations Charitable income tax deductions for contributions to public charities are generally limited to a percentage of a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI). The new law lifts the cap on annual contributions of cash for those who itemize, increasing it from 60% to 100% of AGI for 2020. Any excess contributions can be carried over to the next five years. For cash contributions from
corporations, the new law raises the annual limit from 10% to 25% of taxable income. Please consult your tax advisor for advice on how the CARES Act may impact your charitable giving. Every donor’s tax situation is unique. A Gift Anyone Can Afford Did you realize there are ways to support WFIU that do not affect your lifestyle or jeopardize your family’s security? Consider including WFIU in your will.
