Learning Something New Every Day The world we live in seems to offer endless diversity – we come from all sorts of backgrounds, creeds, ethnicities. And, we don’t have to travel far, over land or online, to sense the divisions in our social and political climate. But, in the broad community that is public radio, a number of things unite us.

y ile Ba

We long for journalism that is informative, researched, and reliable – journalism that lets us stand with the facts, and that makes our democracy stronger. And, when we need a break from the news, we turn to music that can stimulate and soothe – music that will weather passing trends and stand the test of time. No matter when we listen, we seek to understand, and to never stop learning. Public radio is a voice of civility, and one of our lifelines to civilization. Our station is here to connect Indiana to the world. More than 4,000 listeners to WFIU and WFIU2, from Kokomo to French Lick, from Terre Haute to Seymour, have responded in kind by choosing to become listener-members. With other sources of support less certain than before, yours is at least as important as ever. If you’re an annual member, then have you renewed this year? If you gave in the spring – or if you’re a sustaining member – then would you consider giving a bit extra this fall? Have you not contributed in a couple of years, or perhaps ever? Our on-air membership campaign, running from October 16 through 23, is a perfect time to lend your support, once again or for the first time. Listener support keeps WFIU independent and strong, positioned to deliver another year of the high-quality programming you desire. Nowhere else does such a partnership exist between an enlightened community and the necessary public service WFIU provides. I’m proud to be a sustaining member of WFIU. You and I are the “public” in “public radio.” Let’s stay tuned in together, knowing that, for another year, we helped everyone learn something new every day.

Underwriting: For information on how your business can underwrite particular programs on WFIU, call (800) 662-3311. Volunteers: Information about volunteer opportunities is available at (812) 855-1357, or by sending an email to wfiu@indiana.edu. WFIU Sustainers: To start a sustaining membership or to replace the credit or debit card information you’re using for your ongoing monthly donation, please call (800) 662-3311.

Jazz Notes Autumn in south-central Indiana brings bursts of color, home football games (with basketball just around the corner), and, of course, WFIU’s fall fund-drive! From Tuesday, October 16 through Monday, October 23, we’ll continue to bring you great jazz music and all the fun and funky sounds Brother William offers up on The Soul Kitchen, and we’ll also be asking you to pledge your support by call 800-662-3311, or by going online at wfiu.org. For thank-you gifts we’ll have a brand-new collaboration between vocal giant Tony Bennett and pianist-singer Diana Krall, Love Is Here To Stay, that explores the timeless popular-song catalogue of George and Ira Gershwin. Instrumental-jazz fans can opt for the newly-discovered John Coltrane album Both Directions At Once, recorded in 1963 with the saxophonist’s so-called “Classic Quartet.” We promise you good tunes and good vibes throughout the duration!

Bob Arnove

Our weekday afternoon jazz program Just You And Me welcomes several guests this month as well. Local author Bob Arnove stops by on Thursday, October 4 to talk about some of the Indiana jazz musicians and other artists profiled in his book Talent Abounds. On Thursday, October 11 IU jazz educator Brent Wallarab joins us to discuss an upcoming student ensemble performance of Duke Ellington’s music, and on Monday, October 15, IU alumnus and longtime Neil Diamond pianist Tom Hensley drops in to offer tales of Indiana jazz counterculture past and other stories from a life in music. Keep the jazz going on Friday evenings with Afterglow at 8 p.m. and Night Lights at 9 p.m. (details available in our program listings) with overnight jazz continuing from 10 till 2 a.m. Thank you for listening to and supporting your public radio station, WFIU!

Fall Gift Planning The introduction of tax reform in 2018 may have you wondering about the best way to continue to be charitable. Although the standard deduction has doubled, gifts of appreciated property or stock, a gift from your IRA (if 70 ½ or older), and naming us as a partial beneficiary of your retirement plan are still tax-smart methods of making a gift. The Indiana College Tax Credit remains in effect for your state taxes. You may also find that the final months of the year are an ideal time to review your long-range financial and estate plans. Careful planning of charitable gifts can play a vital role in assuring continued economic security for you and loved ones while making what may be your gift of a lifetime.

Cozy Lounge (#243) New! Valid for two-for-one entrée.

And, the greater community is the beneficiary of thoughtful gifts from people like you—the good friends of public radio. WFIU wouldn’t be the same without you, and you wouldn’t be the same without WFIU! For information on making an end-of-theyear gift to the station, or for a free brochure on Effective Giving After Tax Reform, call 812-855-2935 or email plannedgiving@ indianapublicmedia.org.
