The New Sound of Weekends on WFIU2 Labor Day weekend brings us the debut of a broad range of fresh voices on WFIU2. Joining the Saturday evening lineup are: • At 6 p.m., It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders. One of NPR’s most popular podcasts is finding its way to our air. Each week, Sam interviews people in the culture who deserve your attention, and leads recaps of the news with other journalists. Recent episodes have found Sam talking with Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi about her upbringing; exploring why the recession is hitting women particularly hard; and unpacking the cultural archetype that the name “Karen” has become. • At 7, Latino USA. Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and this program delves each week into various aspects of the Latin experience in America. Recent programs have featured a remembrance of Chicano literary great Rudolfo Anaya; a look at the Latino vote during the primary elections; and a conversation with Patricio Manuel, America’s first openly transgender professional boxer. • Live Wire follows at 8. From Portland, it’s a stage show hosted by Luke Burbank that blends live music, original comedy, and freewheeling conversation with established and emerging artists. Guests this summer have included jazz vocalist Jimmie Herrod, improv comedians Middleditch & Schwartz, and Bloomington-based poet Ross Gay. • And, at 9 p.m., from the public radio network PRX, it’s three hours of PRX Remix, a stream of handpicked stories, many from independent creators. Sunday afternoons now also offer the sounds of music from around the world: • At 1 p.m., Global Village, a diverse, engaging mix of world music. • Afropop Worldwide, gone from the WFIU airwaves for seven years, is back! Listen Sundays at 3 for a mix of live concert performances, exclusive interviews, visits to musicians’ homes, and more from across the African Diaspora. Georges Collinet hosts from Cameroon. • At 4 p.m., an old favorite, the Celtic music program The Thistle & Shamrock. • And, between 5 and 7, second helpings of two longtime main-channel programs, Folktales and PorchLight with Tom Roznowski. This round of program changes finds us bidding farewell to City Arts & Lectures. Also leaving the WFIU2 weekend lineup are a number of encore broadcasts: On the Media, Radiolab, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, SymphonyCast, and Live from Here. All these programs will remain on the main channel with the exception of Live from Here, which ended production over the summer. We will continue to air rebroadcasts through September. Details about its replacement will come your way soon!

Dick Bishop

In these “strange and surreal times,” as WFIU Soul Kitchen host William Morris likes to put it, the WFIU jazz department will be taking a look back late in the month for the station’s 70th anniversary celebration. Afterglow’s Mark Chilla will present some vintage clips of founding host Dick Bishop during the Friday evening fund drive program on September 25 from 8-9 p.m. That same week David Brent Johnson will air clips of previous afternoon jazz hosts Michael Bourne and Joe Bourne during Just You and Me, as we celebrate WFIU’s rich history of jazz programming and personalities. On Labor Day Monday, September 7, Just You and Me will feature new music from Grammy-winning bandleader Maria Schneider, whose ambitious two-CD opus Data Lords finds the composer and her long-running ensemble pushing beyond established aesthetic comfort zones; NPR jazz critic Nate Chinen calls it “music of extravagant mastery…imbued with a spirit of risk.” We’ll also have some commentary from Schneider herself! Another new big-band release, Christian McBride’s For Jimmy, Wes and Oliver, pays tribute to the mid1960s collaborations of organist Jimmy Smith, arranger Oliver Nelson, and Indiana guitarist Wes Montgomery. Listen for it this month on Mondays and on Thursdays, when Just You and Me highlights jazz with a connection to the Hoosier state.

This month on FRONTLINE

The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden Tuesday, September 22 at 9pm

Every four years, FRONTLINE tells the dual biography of the two presidential candidates that will step back and look beyond the heated political rhetoric, taking measure of the two individuals and the events that have shaped their lives and values. In the midst of a historic pandemic, surging unemployment, and growing economic uncertainty, American voters will head to the polls this fall to decide whether President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden will lead the country for the next four years. And as it has for every election since 1988, FRONTLINE’s acclaimed series The Choice will investigate the life stories of the two candidates: the roots of their drive to be president, the moments that shaped them, and the life method that has brought them to this point. As the coronavirus pandemic has further inflamed partisan divisions and fueled misinformation and distrust, The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden offers trustworthy journalism that tells the story of the two candidates through revealing interviews with those who know them best. From veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk, who has made four prior installments of The Choice, this two-hour special will prepare Americans not just to vote in the election, but to understand what drives the president who will be sworn in on January 20, 2021, to lead a country in crisis.

Support Our Fall Membership Campaign Impeachment … pandemic … unrest … and now, the elections. None of us can recall a year with more consequential news events than 2020. And, through it all, WFIU and WFIU2 have served as your constant, reliable source of trustworthy regional, national, and world news. We’ve also offered you timeless classical and jazz music and other entertainment for when you simply need a break. Today, in the wake of many changes and much uncertainty, we continue our commitment to providing the full spectrum of news, arts, music, and culture that connect Indiana with the world every day of the year. Our weeklong on-air membership campaign for this fall is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 22. Perhaps you’ve never given to WFIU before, or have let your membership lapse in the last couple of years. Or, maybe you renewed not long ago, but feel you’d like to give a little extra. Maybe you’d like to pick up a special thank-you such as tickets to a virtual event with Robert Siegel on the station’s 70th anniversary; or perhaps you’d rather let all of your gift go toward our programming. Regardless, it is your contribution to our station that will sustain us, and will ensure we can provide high-quality content to everyone in our community who cares to listen.
