THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS American Masters – Never Too Late: The Doc Severinsen Story Friday, April 2 at 9pm Explore the groundbreaking career of master trumpeter Doc Severinsen, from his three decades as the colorful bandleader on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson to his relentless schedule of touring and performing into his nineties. Featuring rare archival footage, intimate interviews, new musical performances, and more, this film highlights a beloved musical icon and traces his work and personal trials.
My Grandparents’ War Sundays at 8pm, beginning April 4 Combining key moments in history with compelling personal stories, My Grandparents' War is a four-part series that explores the past to understand the extraordinary impact of World War II on the families of four British actors. Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Carey Mulligan each host a one-hour journey into their respective family histories as they travel to historic locations, from the beaches of Dunkirk to the former site of a prisoner-of-war camp in Hong Kong, and retrace their grandparents' footsteps.
Atlantic Crossing on Masterpiece Sundays at 9pm, beginning April 4 Based on a true story of passion and politics, Atlantic Crossing ranges back and forth across the North Atlantic throughout World War II, depicting momentous events in the changing fortunes of Norway, Great Britain, and the United States. A friendship forged in war is beautifully portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) as U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and Swedish star Sofia Helin (The Bridge) as Norwegian Crown Princess Martha.
American Masters – Oliver Sacks: His Own Life Friday, April 9 at 8pm
2 / wtiu.org
Oliver Sacks: His Own Life explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Drawing on these deeply personal reflections, as well as interviews with close friends, family, colleagues, patients, and archival material, this film is the story of a beloved doctor and writer who redefined our understanding of the brain and mind.
Independent Lens – Down a Dark Stairwell Monday, April 12 at 10pm On a fall day in 2014, Peter Liang, a Chinese American police officer, shot and killed an innocent, unarmed black man named Akai Gurley. Unfolding in the dark stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project, the shooting inflamed the residents of New York City and thrust two marginalized communities into the uneven criminal justice system together.
NOVA – Picture a Scientist Wednesday, April 14 at 9pm Picture a Scientist chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, we encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
Independent Lens – Philly D.A. Tuesdays at 9pm, beginning April 20 In 2017, Philadelphia had one of the highest incarceration rates of any major city in the US. When civil rights attorney Larry Krasner mounted a long-shot campaign to become district attorney, he ran on a bold pledge: to end mass incarceration by changing the culture of the criminal justice system from within. He shocked the establishment by winning in a landslide. Over eight episodes, Philly D.A. explores the most pressing social issues of our time—police brutality, the opioid crisis, gun violence, and mass incarceration.
International Jazz Day – 10th Anniversary Celebration Friday, April 30 at 9pm Celebrate International Jazz Day—the world’s largest celebration of jazz as a force for peace, intercultural dialogue, and international cooperation—with a look back at 10 years of historic International Jazz Day concerts featuring dozens of music icons. Watch unforgettable performances by Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, Hugh Masekela, and many more. wtiu.org / 3

Meet Mariam Sobh, the New Host of ‘All IN’ Mariam Sobh recently joined All IN, WFYI’s statewide public affairs show, as the new host. Replacing former All IN host Matt Pelsor, Sobh comes to IPB News from Chicago, where she hosted, anchored, reported, and produced at WBEZ, WBBM, and other organizations. Sobh has spent more than 15 years as a storyteller and has worked for various news outlets as a political reporter, morning news anchor, traffic editor and reporter, elections producer, midday news host, and evening news anchor. “I’ve worked in commercial and public radio and have always appreciated the way public radio enables stories to really breathe. I was drawn to this position because of the innovation and journalism that I’ve seen coming from WFYI and IPB. It truly is an honor and privilege to be joining All IN,” Sobh said. All IN airs weekdays at 1 p.m. on WFIU2.

Hemingway
Monday–Wednesday, April 5–7 at 8pm
Hemingway—written by Geoffrey C. Ward and produced by Sarah Botstein—interweaves a close study of the biographical events of the author’s life with excerpts from his fiction, non-fiction, and short stories, informed by interviews with celebrated writers, scholars, and Hemingway’s son, Patrick.

The documentary paints an intimate picture of Hemingway the writer—who captured on paper the complexities of the human condition in spare and profound prose, and whose work remains deeply influential around the world—while also penetrating the myth of Hemingway the man’s man to reveal a deeply troubled and ultimately tragic figure. The film also explores Hemingway’s limitations and biases as an artist and a man of his time.
The filmmakers explore the painstaking process through which Hemingway created some of the most important works of fiction in American letters, including novels The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea; short stories “Hills Like White Elephants,” “The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” “Up in Michigan,” “Indian Camp,” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro;” as well as the nonfiction works Death in the Afternoon and A t es Moveable Feast. Ernest Hemingway, the iconic literary figure considered one of the greatest American writers and among the first to live and work at the treacherous nexus of art and celebrity, is the subject of a new three-part, six-hour documentary series directed by award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.
Narrated by Peter Coyote, the series features an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced by Jeff Daniels), his friends, and family vividly to life. Through letters to and from his four wives—voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker, and Patricia Clarkson—the film reveals Hemingway at his most romantic and his most vulnerable, grappling at times with insecurity, anxiety, and existential loneliness.
