This Month’s Highlights Great Performances – From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2020 Wednesday, January 1 at 9pm
Under the baton of three-time Grammy Award-winning guest conductor and Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons, the concert spotlights the talent of the Vienna State Ballet and the Vienna Philharmonic. Join host Hugh Bonneville for a tour of Musikverein’s archives, which hold the largest collection of Beethoven manuscripts in the world, the Beethoven museum, and other locations in honor of the composer’s 250th birthday (December 17, 2020).
McCarthy: American Experience Monday, January 6 at 9pm
McCarthy chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator who came to power after a stunning victory in an election no one thought he could win. Once in office, he declared that there was a vast conspiracy threatening America—emanating not from a rival superpower, but from within. Free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being enemies of the state, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations, bullying intimidation, grandiose showmanship and cruel victimization. After years in the headlines, he was brought down by his own excesses and overreach.
Dave Chappelle: The Mark Twain Prize Tuesday, January 7 at 9pm
Dave Chappelle is an internationally recognized standup comedian and actor whose trademark wit and sharp, irreverent social commentary explores race, popular culture, sex, drugs, politics, and fame. Arguably the most-touring comic on the circuit, Chappelle has performed more than 1,600 shows in the past four years. An outstanding lineup of entertainers gathered in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall to salute Chappelle, recipient of the 22nd annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on October 27, 2019.
FRONTLINE – America’s Great Divide: Obama to Trump
Monday, January 13 and Tuesday, January 14 at 9pm An investigation into America’s increasingly bitter, divided and toxic politics. Episode One traces how Barack Obama’s promise of unity collapsed as increasing racial, cultural and political divisions laid the groundwork for the rise of Donald Trump. Episode Two examines how Donald Trump’s campaign exploited the country’s divisions and how his presidency has unleashed anger on both sides of the divide. 4 / wtiu.org

From free-diving in underground river systems and descending deep into the caves of the Maya underworld, to kayaking Himalayan whitewater and scaling unclimbed Arctic peaks, these expeditions push Backshall and his expert crew to the limit.

Beautiful by Design explores distinctive features of IU Bloomington campus and the reasons for its appeal.
Great Performances – Movies for Grownups with AARP the Magazine Sunday, January 19 at 6pm
For nearly two decades, AARP’s Movies for Grownups program has championed movies for grownups, by grownups, by advocating for the 50-plus audience, fighting industry ageism, and encouraging films that resonate with older viewers. In this star-studded awards ceremony, Annette Bening receives the 2019 Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award and other actors and filmmakers are honored for their work.

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids A New Year Makeover for Your Estate Plan Along with your New Year’s resolution to exercise more, take a few moments to reflect on your current will or estate plan. A good estate plan is like a mirror: it should reflect your values and relationships in their highest, best and most current form. But change is a constant. Millions of Americans experience dramatic changes in their financial assets, living arrangements and other life circumstances. Are you one of them? Simple changes in your life can have a significant impact on your estate plan. Have you moved? Bought or sold property? Has someone in your life passed away? Have you remarried? Do you have new grandchildren? Has your health changed? If so, how will those changes affect your legacy? Can you still recognize your best self—and the legacy you want to leave—in your current estate plan? A sound plan will provide peace of mind and clarity of intent. As you create or review your estate plan, remember to consider creating a personal legacy through a charitable gift. Naming a WTIU, or other charitable organizations, in your will is an ideal way to make a statement of your support for the fine work that is done by public broadcasting in our community every day. Contact 812-856-3964 or cmhakes@iu.edu with questions about giving opportunities at WTIU.

Sanditon on Masterpiece Sunday, January 12 at 9pm
When Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817, she started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town. She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies finishes the story and brings it to television. Masterpiece’s bold and lavish adaptation of Jane Austen’s final work stars Rose Williams as Austen’s lively but levelheaded heroine, Charlotte Heywood; Theo James as the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker; Anne Reid as the forthright grande dame of Sanditon, Lady Denham; Kris Marshall as Sanditon’s compulsively enterprising promoter, Tom Parker; and Crystal Clarke as the mysterious West Indian heiress, Miss Lambe. Sanditon tells the story of Tom Parker, who is obsessed with turning the sleepy seaside village of Sanditon into a fashionable health resort. He enlists the backing of local bigwig Lady Denham. Through a mishap, Tom makes the acquaintance of the Heywoods and invites their eldest daughter, Charlotte, for an extended stay at Sanditon. Meanwhile, Lady Denham is playing matchmaker for her destitute nephew, Sir Edward, who is determined to seduce Lady Denham’s ward, Clara.
Howards End on Masterpiece
Sunday, January 12 at 8pm Often considered E.M. Forster’s masterpiece, Howards End is the story of two independent and unconventional sisters and the men in their lives seeking love and meaning as they navigate an ever-changing world. Academy Award winning screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan brings a fresh take to this adaptation. Margaret Schlegel (Hayley Atwell) is an intelligent, idealistic young woman who is courted by the older Henry Wilcox (Matthew Macfadyen), a self-made conservative businessman.
Vienna Blood
Sunday, January 19 at 10pm Cultures and ideas collide in 1900s Vienna, Austria, where opulent cafes and opera houses set the scene for heated discussions about philosophy, science and art. When Max Liebermann, one of Sigmund Freud’s young, brilliant students, encounters a detective inspector facing a strange case, he decides to help investigate a series of unusual and chilling murders. Max draws upon his perception and forensics skills, along with his deep understanding of human behavior and deviance, to solve some of Vienna’s most mysterious and deadly cases.
